The mean monthly rainfall in the BRB varied from 252 to 381 mm with the southwest monsoon (SWM), northeast monsoons (NEM), and annual rainfall having shown comparatively high mean values (1371 mm, 1632 mm, and 3654 mm, respectively). The lag-1 autocorrelation test revealed that the rainfall data were homogenous and noncorrelated. The MK and SR tests identified varying trends (significant or nonsignificant, increasing or decreasing) in annual, seasonal, and monthly rainfall. Over the 45 year period, decreasing trends were observed in annual, the SWM, and monthly rainfalls whereas increasing trends were observed for the NEM season. The spatial distribution of rainfall trends in the BRB showed an oscillation of increasing and decreasing trends in monthly rainfall. At the same time, annual and seasonal trends showed a consolidated spread of increasing trends in the middle and lower parts and decreasing trends in the upper part of the river basin. A comparison of terrain elevation with the spatial distribution of rainfall trends did not reveal a significant relationship in the BRB; however, it was noted that rainfall distribution in the region was generally controlled by elongated mountain chains and isolated mountains of higher elevation. With the exception of a few stations, rainfall in the BRB showed a nonsignificant decreasing trend over the period from 1970 to 2014 of approximately −0.04 mm/year at the rate of −0.001 percent per year. The results and findings of the present research can be used for better organization of agriculture, especially rain-fed agricultural activities, and other developmental projects including river basin management for hydroelectric projects.","PeriodicalId":36897,"journal":{"name":"Papers in Applied Geography","volume":"10 1","pages":"131 - 160"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74273472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

TP rates fell in most areas over time especially between the 2013 and 2018 surveys. The socioeconomically disadvantaged Northern states had the highest TP rates but achieved the largest reductions over time while the Southern states had relatively lower TP rates but mainly experienced an increase or much smaller reduction over time. Persistent spatial clustering of TP and temporal changes in TP indicates geographical location had a significant impact on the occurrence of TP across Nigeria as well as on temporal changes in TP in individual states. TP rates also varied significantly over time by educational level, Wealth Index, marital status and ethnicity. The risk of TP remains high especially in Abuja, Delta, Kogi and Edo states where TP rates consistently increased over time and amongst teenage women that are poor, married/living together, widowed/divorced and illiterate. Findings suggest that designing and adopting policies/programs that take into consideration the spatiotemporal pattern and subgroup disparities in TP is fundamental to achieving more significant reductions in TP in Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":36897,"journal":{"name":"Papers in Applied Geography","volume":"1 1","pages":"161 - 182"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75578973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, even with a considerable amount of research on indoor GIS and various indoor systems developed for different applications, there has not been much attention devoted to adopting indoor GIS for the evaluation space usage. Applying indoor GIS for space usage assessment can not only provide a map-based interface for data collection, but also brings spatial analysis and reporting capabilities for this purpose. This study aims to explore best practice of using an indoor GIS platform to assess space usage and design a complete indoor GIS solution to facilitate and streamline the data collection, a management and reporting workflow. The design has a user-friendly interface for data collectors and an automated mechanism to aggregate and visualize the space usage statistics. A case study was carried out at the Purdue University Libraries to assess study space usage. The system is efficient and effective in collecting student counts and activities and generating reports to interested parties in a timely manner. The analysis results of the collected data provide insights into the user preferences in terms of space usage. This study demonstrates the advantages of applying an indoor GIS solution to evaluate space usage as well as providing a framework to design and implement such a system. The system can be easily extended and applied to other buildings for space usage assessment purposes with minimal development efforts.","PeriodicalId":36897,"journal":{"name":"Papers in Applied Geography","volume":"32 1","pages":"104 - 116"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85892942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many of these dams are covered in dense vegetation that impede inspections and increase slope instability. Because of their relatively spatially coarse collections, LiDAR datasets are often insufficient on small earthen dams for adequately characterizing both the ground surface and vegetative cover. This study tests the feasibility of small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) derived “image returns” in extracting a canopy height model (CHM) on a private dam in Columbia, South Carolina. Following traditional methods for creating a CHM from 3D point clouds, both LiDAR- and sUAS image-derived datasets were used to create a composite CHM. A validation process used a set of 30 in situ measured tree heights compared to their modeled heights from the sUAS only, LiDAR only, and composite CHMs. In terms of the root mean squared error (RMSE), the LiDAR only model (5.60 m) outperformed the sUAS only (8.17) and LiDAR + sUAS (7.23 m) composite models. Findings from this study suggest that sUAS derived point clouds have potential, but the structure from motion (SfM) technology and supporting ground control need to be improved before operational application on canopy height modeling for dense vegetation over earthen dams.","PeriodicalId":36897,"journal":{"name":"Papers in Applied Geography","volume":"81 1","pages":"436 - 448"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73356101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This concept maximizes accessibility and reduces travel costs for individuals with multiple trip purposes. The appropriateness of facility center locations are evaluated with two parameters: (1) habitation accessibility to facility centers using the two-step-floating-catchment-area (2SFCA), method, and (2) facility center crowdedness using the inverted two-step-floating-catchment-area (i2SFCA) method. This study uses both 2SFCA and i2SFCA methods concurrently to get perception of quality of service provided and received. Considering two facilities such as a health care center and a high school for spatial planning of facility centers, the proposed methodology is analyzed for two cases. In the first case, it is assumed that no facility exists in the study area and in the second case, the existing locations of health care centers and high schools are considered for analysis. The proposed methodology is applied in Jhunjhunu—a district in Rajasthan, India—as a case study. The discussed policy strategy would help with resource allocation in a phased manner for new facility development or capacity augmentation of existing facilities, and thus would improve the quality of rural citizens’ lives.","PeriodicalId":36897,"journal":{"name":"Papers in Applied Geography","volume":"188 1","pages":"82 - 103"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72921206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal was to assess the impact of urban growth on the land cover of the area in order to provide baseline information that can support a sustainable urban growth of the area in the future. To achieve this goal, archived Landsat satellite data were classified on a broad scale for four epochs (1988, 1998, 2008 and 2018) and a change detection of the land cover of the area was conducted using the four datasets. To understand the dynamics of the spatial pattern of the change that is taking place in the area, landscape metrics were incorporated into the analysis. The results showed that over the 30-year period, built-up lands doubled its original size, mostly from expansion and infills. Additionally, there was a small decadal increase in entropy values, which indicated that the area is still experiencing sprawl, but on a small scale. These results provided baseline data that can be incorporated into future urban growth plans for the area.","PeriodicalId":36897,"journal":{"name":"Papers in Applied Geography","volume":"5 1","pages":"67 - 81"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80096822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The stoppage of minorities remains one of the country’s more contentious topics as it weighs the rights of the community over the rights of the individual. In a city of eight million, law enforcement, employing the stop-and-frisk, has managed to stop over five million across the span of a decade with the majority being Black and Hispanic. Local law enforcement claims the stops were about crime; the groups most affected claim the stops were about race and space. This research tests both claims across two time periods utilizing a stepwise regression. Results revealed that crime was a significant predictor for stops concerning the Black group across both time periods while gentrification was a significant predictor for Hispanic stops across both time periods.","PeriodicalId":36897,"journal":{"name":"Papers in Applied Geography","volume":"9 1","pages":"34 - 49"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73501226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The project was meant to set a best practice for labor market inclusion of LGBT people. DJ created integrated territorial networks to help LGBT people find work through the involvement of associations and stakeholders. The project proved, since it promoted the employability of disadvantaged individuals at high risk of discrimination (through orientation and coaching services, three-month internships, and job placement services), but also since it performed a capacity-building action. The analysis shows why the implementation of the DJ Project in the city of Naples has achieved a virtuous yet at the same time ambiguous effect for the specific territorial context.","PeriodicalId":36897,"journal":{"name":"Papers in Applied Geography","volume":"1 1","pages":"50 - 66"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75858540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Spatial statistical techniques and multinomial logistic regression analyses were employed. Findings indicate wide variation of coverage at regional, urban/rural, and district levels. Coverage for all the vaccines exhibited statistically significant spatial dependence nationally. Locally, vaccination coverage hotspot for all the vaccines clustered among 16 states in the south while cold spots were in seven northern states. Of the 6059 children, 25, 56, and 9 percent were fully vaccinated, under-vaccinated, and non-vaccinated, respectively. Children who did not receive postnatal care, had no health card, resided in poorer households, and whose mothers did not receive tetanus injection had higher odd of being non-vaccinated. Children, who were delivered at home, did not receive postnatal care, whose mothers could not read and lived in poorest, poorer, and middle households had increased risk of being under-vaccinated. Findings suggest that increased access to immunization, community-level health education and communication are required particularly in rural and northern districts.","PeriodicalId":36897,"journal":{"name":"Papers in Applied Geography","volume":"11 1","pages":"1 - 33"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81845939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The extended index is particularly suitable to use when there is no attribute information associated with geographic events except for locations and times when events occurred. In addition, it allows users to assess and visualize spatiotemporally distributed geographic events and to test if the events are more (or less) spatiotemporally clustered than would be expected by random chances. As a demonstration, this index was applied to crime and health data sets to demonstrate its usefulness. This article details the mathematical steps that formulate the extension. The calculation of the index values is fast and efficient with mathematical equations presented in the article.","PeriodicalId":36897,"journal":{"name":"Papers in Applied Geography","volume":"23 1","pages":"117 - 130"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87097584","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
