Although this famine occurred more than 42 years ago, the memories still linger among those who were traumatized by the experience. Thus, the main research question is “To what degree does the collective memories of the people in a certain area affect the policymaking of a country?” In order to answer this question, this reflective study examines previous research and historical writings regarding the famine, the collective memories of those who inhabited the district during the occurrence, and the efforts made by certain groups/institutions to deal with the consequent starvation from the lack of timely government relief. Based on the results, the occurrence brought certain misery to many people living in the five districts of Karawang Regency, especially those in the Pedes District. Although the government did provide assistance through the supply of food, items, and laborintensive projects, it was somewhat late. Moreover, such memories have made an impact on future policymaking regarding disaster management. The implication of the findings is that the ability to analyze the current situation and forecast future possibilities is much more important than only focusing on overcoming the issue itself. Such awareness should be further promoted in order to establish better management of natural and man-made disasters on a national level. On January 25, 2013 Anne Wizorek, a German feminist, initiated the idea of encouraging German women to use the hashtag #Aufschrei to express their personal experiences of sexism and harassment, both verbal and sexual. The data used in this study are the 10 relevant tweets with the highest engagement scores, as reported by the Keyhole online tool. Based on their content, eight of the 10 tweets still adhered to Wizorek's initial intention, which was to bring attention to acts of violence against women and sexism. Further analysis, using the method of computer-mediated discourse analysis (CMDA) of the tweets, was applied to the data corpus. This showed that the hashtag #Aufschrei was also used to promote racist views as well as in attempts to form a stereotype of refugees from Muslim majority countries as a group that commonly perpetrates violence toward women.","PeriodicalId":368820,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International University Symposium on Humanities and Arts (INUSHARTS 2019)","volume":"195 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116698521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, domestic violence is a complex issue and is often misrepresented. Thus, critical appraisals of how popular cultural productions portray domestic violence are urgently required. To this end, the present article utilizes the qualitative research method of close textual reading to examine the peripheral characters of the novel, It Ends with Us (2016). The analysis evaluates the attitudes of these characters toward others and scrutinizes their reactions to the issue of domestic violence. The examination is grounded in theories such as Flood, Pease, Taylor, and Webster’s (2009) concept of attitudes and Schippers’ (2007) notion of hegemonic femininity. The findings of this study indicate that the majority of the characters in the novel exemplify a simplified perspective of domestic violence and tend to regard violence as a private and normal phenomenon in a marriage. The outcomes of the study also indicate that the attitudes of these characters toward domestic violence are influenced by several factors such as internalized patriarchal norms and perspectives on marriage. In conclusion, the peripheral characters of the novel fail to function maximally to support the abused female protagonist. The novel’s proposed solution to the issue of domestic violence is also overly simple: it does not propose professional intervention or punitive measures against the","PeriodicalId":368820,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International University Symposium on Humanities and Arts (INUSHARTS 2019)","volume":"137 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115476803","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle became a controversy since Harry was the only royal family member to marry a mixed-race woman. Media outlets around the world reporting on their marriage mostly focused on Meghan’s racial identity. This research focuses on how and why race relations became commonly highlighted issue in the media coverage, especially they relate to racial identity. The significance of this research is to provide a critical perspective toward a globally known cultural event. The theory of modern racism proposed by Caliendo and McIlwain (2015) [1] and Paltridge’s (2006) [2] critical discourse analysis and framing serve as the framework for this research. Furthermore, since some media outlets in the UK and the US are dominated by white people who want to maintain their existence, there is ambivalence in the media regarding her presence and whether she presents a new image of the British royal family or is a biracial woman who does not significantly impact how biracial people are represented in the media. Nevertheless, gender and LGBT issues have not commonly been explored in sci-fi content like Black Mirror. Through an analysis on the mise-en-scène, or cinematographic elements (setting, color, costume, camera work, and performance), and the representation of queer characters in the media, this article attempts to identify whether the episode, as a queer narrative—dubbed “a celebration of queerness” by the fans—is really free from any heteronormativity elements. The study found that heteronormativity is still depicted in the episode because stereotypes of queer characters are still used to some degree in portraying the lesbian characters. As a heterotopia, according to Foucault [1], the establishment of the queer characters in “San Junipero” also fits Rich’s [2] theory on compulsory heteronormativity. Nevertheless, not all aspects of the episode suggest pure heteronormativity. It must be admitted that there are some efforts to create an empowering queer narrative through the establishment of a non-stereotypical identity in the female–female relationship. The development of SI in Priangan became so phenomenal due to the presence of priyayi, who led the SI movement from the cities to the villages. The merger of priyayi in SI in Priangan became a significant concern to the government of the Dutch East Indies because the movement was a threat, and the pro and contra of the presence of SI in Priangan caused the priyayi to become divided into several groups. This article aims to explain the role of priyayi in local SI in Priangan. The study used the historical method according to Louis Gottschalk’s [1] stages. The method in this research was to look for a heuristic source by collecting primary sources documents, such as archives, documents, and some literature related to the theme of the study like contemporary newspapers. In addition, the study uses secondary sources, such as journal articles and books relating to this research. Further criticism is done to find an objective truth from one point of view. Then, verification of the interpretation of the facts was conducted. The last step of the historiography was to write an interpretation of the various facts regarding the role of priyayi in the local SI in the Priangan residency. The contribution of the priyayi in the local SI in Priangan plays a role as a central figure and has a unique attraction in establishing power relations to gain the trust of the Priangan community.","PeriodicalId":368820,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International University Symposium on Humanities and Arts (INUSHARTS 2019)","volume":"312 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131042571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the domain of psychology, passion is deemed to be the pivotal factor for successful classroom learning. Passion is closely correlated with motivation and the two attributes influence each other. However, the learning of French is not accorded due importance in the school curriculum and students are not adequately motivated to learn the language. The quality of French learning in schools is thus often below par. This study aims to identify the number of French teachers throughout the Jabodetabek area who display passion in their teaching practices and to describe their classroom pedagogies. It further intends to elucidate the factors that influence the passion and motivation of French instructors in high schools. This combined-method research initiative obtained data from 37 French teachers through questionnaires, self-reflection sheets, and semi-structured interviews. The collected data were subsequently processed using descriptive quantitative analysis and an independent samples t-test. The results did not identify the attribute of passion in any of the examined French teachers. However, three of the instructors came close to displaying all the qualities of teachers who are passionate about their profession. Unfortunately, these three instructors could not demonstrate learning effectiveness in their classrooms. Therefore, the investigation leads to the conclusion that there is a dire need for French teachers who are passionate about their work. The outcomes of this study also indicate several factors that influence the passion for teaching. Educational institutions must inculcate, develop, maintain, and integrate the characteristic of passion for the profession into the teacher education","PeriodicalId":368820,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International University Symposium on Humanities and Arts (INUSHARTS 2019)","volume":"93 19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125018898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Hadhrami people belong to the second largest minority group who came to Indonesia through diaspora. The Hadhrami people’s assimilation was best facilitated through religion [1]. Another form of assimilation was interracial marriages, which gave resulted in mixed-race offspring ( Peranakan/Muwallad ). Certainly, interracial marriages engendered issues related to cultural identity. A portion of the Muwallad population choose to preserve native Hadhramaut culture inherited from their ancestors, but another portion of the Muwallad opt to adopt the cultures and traditions of their birthplace, Indonesia. There are many examples of this social reality in Indonesian literature, including Fatimah (1938) [2], a drama written by Hadhrami author Hoesin Bafagih. This research aims to elaborate on the discussions pertaining to intergenerational differences of Muwallad identity in Fatimah. Textual analysis, particularly the method of close reading, was applied during this research. In addition, concepts of representation and cultural identity [3], [4] are applied in analyzing the text. The research concludes that the drama reveals generational differences in Hadhrami descendants’ understanding and practice of cultural identity. Hadhrami people are heterogenous while being both inclusive and exclusive, and this heterogeneity is not entirely anchored by age. Instead of portraying Hadhrami youth as an inclusive group, Fatimah’ s inclusivity can be more clearly found in the portrayal of the older Hadhrami group.","PeriodicalId":368820,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International University Symposium on Humanities and Arts (INUSHARTS 2019)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133663835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Teachers could take advantage of their enthusiasm for gaming by integrating learning with games played in the classroom or at home. Most students in Indonesia do not consider English as a foreign language important or challenging. There is a marked difference in learning English at school and self-learning: a student must study specific materials by a certain grade at school; however, students can self-learn from discrete types of exposure. Very few students engage in self-learning or know that they must master English. This study examined whether the integration of video games to English classes would motivate students to learn. The experiment focused on enhancing the motivation of students to read English text. Data were collected through a mixed method. Besides collecting pre- and post- tests, the researcher also administered a questionnaire to the students who performed best in the post-test. The t-test calculation performed on the obtained results revealed only a slight increase in the motivation of participating students. The outcomes of the analysis of the questionnaire divulged that the game’s visualization helped students who performed best to understand English better and that these learners were incentivized to improve their English by doing what they love.","PeriodicalId":368820,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International University Symposium on Humanities and Arts (INUSHARTS 2019)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115531277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Achieving a nuanced portrayal of domestic violence, this television series grapples with the complex issue but does not quite expose its root. This short paper analyses the concept of masculinity, which is described by Connell (2005) as the practices and behaviors evinced by men and postulates that this social construct forms the fundamental reason for domestic violence. To support this argument, the paper highlights relevant examples from the television series and primarily investigates two themes: (1) why the ideal of masculinity becomes the ground that breeds domestic violence, and (2) how the conceptualization and articulation of masculinity influence social groups, particularly women and children. The present investigation of the series validates the view that socially constructed masculine traits such as superiority and dominance trigger violent tendencies in men who desire to sustain their control over their intimate relations. The ideal of masculinity also causes men to disregard the impact of their violent actions on others close to them. As a result, women and children are often physically and mentally victimized.","PeriodicalId":368820,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International University Symposium on Humanities and Arts (INUSHARTS 2019)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121770478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
