Marie in 1822. Charged by Michigan's territorial governor with collecting information on Anishinaabe people, he soon married Jane, \"discovered\" the family's writings, and began soliciting them for traditional Anishinaabe stories. But what began as literary play became the setting for political struggle. Jane and her family wrote with attention to the beauty of Anishinaabe narratives and to their expression of an Anishinaabe world that continued to coexist with the American republic. But Schoolcraft appropriated the stories and published them as his own writing, seeking to control their meaning and to destroy their impact in service to the \"civilizing\" interests of the United States. In this dramatic story, Maureen Konkle helps recover the literary achievements of Jane Johnston Schoolcraft and her kin, revealing as never before how their lives and work shed light on nineteenth-century struggles over the future of Indigenous people in the United States.","PeriodicalId":36874,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Critical Pedagogy","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147881347","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A large portion were middle- and upper-class professionals, including many physicians. This chapter examines the Cold War context in which, on the one hand, Cuban physicians joined an American medical community, and, on the other hand, Miami’s medical institutions emerged as innovators in the field of international medical education. It focuses in particular on the University of Miami’s Program for Foreign Medical Graduates, a federally sponsored refugee retraining program for Cuban refugee physicians preparing to take the standardized exam required of foreigners seeking an American medical license. The program—part of a larger, Cold War effort to integrate Cubans into an American citizenry—reflects the cultural and political underpinnings of so-called “modern medicine.” Meanwhile, Cuban physicians who avoided or failed to pass the foreign exam nonetheless continued to practice medicine in many of the unregulated storefront <italic>clínicas</italic> that proliferated in Little Havana.","PeriodicalId":36874,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Critical Pedagogy","volume":"1 1","pages":"18-59"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147906630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the widespread presence of US bases throughout the Japanese archipelago since 1945, Japan became a launching pad of America’s war in Vietnam. In response, Japanese postwar intellectuals founded the Beheiren movement in 1965 with the sole purpose of bringing peace in Vietnam. Hundreds of thousands of war-weary ordinary citizens of postwar Japan actively joined this anti-Vietnam War movement. When GI uprisings erupted in every major US base worldwide as the war in Southeast Asia bogged down, American activists and Japanese activists/students flooded to Iwakuni to support the vigorous GI resistance happening there, where transpacific activism flourished. Their collaboration included publishing Semper Fi, a widely distributed underground GI paper chronicling the daily happenings on US bases within the context of the unprecedented antiwar protests in Japan and elsewhere in the global 1960s, which gradually weakened in the early 1970s with America’s apparent defeat in Vietnam.","PeriodicalId":36874,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Critical Pedagogy","volume":"1 1","pages":"107-124"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147908911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The maroons themselves had as their primary goal to stay below the radar, undetected. In this, they were incredibly successful. However, it is possible to partially reconstruct how they lived from the evidence provided by contemporary documents, oral history, and through recent discoveries in archaeology. Across the Dismal Swamp, three types of marronage developed. Fringe Marronage included those maroons who settled at the natural edge of the swamp, strategically situated for easy access to both the swamp and outside worlds. Liminal Marronage was embraced by maroons beginning in the late 18th century alongside corporate exploitation of the swamp, draining projects for agriculture, canal digging, and lumber production. The Deep Swamp Maroons of the interior were those who sought to distance themselves physically, socially, and economically from the exterior world as much as possible. These were the most permanently settled maroons of the swamp, often living for years (even decades sometimes) in their swamp isolation.","PeriodicalId":36874,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Critical Pedagogy","volume":"1 1","pages":"92-136"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147886940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Beginning in 1933, New Deal policies helped Detroit avoid bankruptcy, ended the foreclosure and water shut-off crisis, and rebuilt the city’s infrastructure. Union organizing and strikes, given legal sanction by New Deal labor legislation, empowered workers to demand higher wages and safer working conditions in automobile. Yet, while New Deal policies benefited the city and improved public health, they also exacerbated environmental inequalities. New Deal housing agencies incorporated the racist property appraisal and lending practices of the real estate and banking industries into their vast new system of federal mortgage loan insurance. Redlining, along with restrictive covenants and racist mob violence by whites, trapped African Americans in neighborhoods with declining housing stock and poorer air quality while giving whites privileged access to suburban single-family homes with newer building materials and cleaner air. And while New Deal labor policies institutionalized collective bargaining for newly unionized autoworkers, they left shopfloor segregation intact, contributing to higher rates of occupational disease for African Americans.","PeriodicalId":36874,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Critical Pedagogy","volume":"1 1","pages":"59-77"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147902854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the midst of intense Cold War turmoil and the escalating struggle for Black freedom, the United States also engaged in a nationwide commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Civil War. Commemorative events centered on Gettysburg, site of the best-known, bloodiest, and most symbolically charged battle of the conflict. Inevitably, the centennial of Lincoln’s iconic Gettysburg Address received special focus, pressed into service to help the nation understand its present and define its future--a future that would ironically include another tragic event days later with the assassination of another American president.In this fascinating work, Jill Ogline Titus uses centennial events in Gettysburg to examine the history of political, social, and community change in 1960s America. Examining the experiences of political leaders, civil rights activists, preservation-minded Civil War enthusiasts, and local residents, Titus shows how the era’s deep divisions thrust Gettysburg into the national spotlight and ensured that white and Black Americans would define the meaning of the battle, the address, and the war in dramatically different ways.","PeriodicalId":36874,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Critical Pedagogy","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147886261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
