Conducted by email and in person over the Spring and Summer of 2017, this interview uses Tony Tremblay’s ideas about intercultural work in New Brunswick as a frame to examine Elder’s work with French writers within and outside the province. Writers considered in the interview include Hermenegilde Chiasson, Fred Cogswell, and Serge Patrice Thibodeau. The interview also covers Elder’s experience as editor of ellipse and concludes by considering the part spirituality plays in the act of translation.","PeriodicalId":36865,"journal":{"name":"Quebec Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45276980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ransom","doi":"10.3828/QS.2018.8","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3828/QS.2018.8","url":null,"abstract":"Although his films have not garnered the same level of popular success in Quebec and Hollywood recognition as those of “new generation” directors Philippe Falardeau, Jean-Marc Vallee, or Denis Villeneuve, Denis Cote’s unique body of work has earned him praise from local film critics and on the international art film circuit. This essay examines how his films, notably Les etats nordiques/Drifting States (2005), Elle veut le chaos/All That She Wants (2008), Carcasses (2009), Curling (2010), Vic + Flo ont vu un ours/Vic + Flo Saw a Bear (2013), and Boris sans Beatrice/Boris without Beatrice (2014), explore the tensions between center and periphery in francophone Canadian cultures. Their marginal settings, idiosyncratic characters, and open-ended narratives featuring violence and uncertainty represent the threat posed by the hegemonic forces of urbanization and globalization and their impact on individuals living in cultural conditions of exiguity.","PeriodicalId":36865,"journal":{"name":"Quebec Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3828/QS.2018.8","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43134626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
