It has had and continues to have a great influence on literary works, not only as a culturally significant religious text, but also as a literary work of merit in its own right. This article reflects on the extent to which this well-known feature of the Bible might be relevant to the work of a theologian who receives it as a sacred text. First of all, a review is made of the reception of the literary dimension of the Bible throughout history. For various reasons this dimension has tended to be historically underestimated but, at the same time, it was usually admitted that ignoring it was tantamount to compromising the very functionality of the biblical text. There follows a theoretical reflection on the role of literary language in two important areas for theology: the communication of spiritual experience and the representation of history. Finally, a possible classification of biblical contents is proposed according to their literary characteristics and the conditions they establish from the point of view of communication.","PeriodicalId":36858,"journal":{"name":"Church, Communication and Culture","volume":"7 1","pages":"370 - 390"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47983985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In his official documents, and with the theology of communication as a background, Benedict XVI has explored ethical implications of new ways of communicating. This study aims to analyse the content in which the German Pope has addressed the media and digital culture. The conclusions of the research show the thought of the Pontiff on the technological progress, the ethics of information, the impact of media today, the promotion of media education, the use of Internet and social media, and the implementation of digital technology as a vehicle for evangelisation.","PeriodicalId":36858,"journal":{"name":"Church, Communication and Culture","volume":"7 1","pages":"391 - 414"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43981959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context of growing contestation and polarization, this paper addresses the legal-canonical admissibility of internal criticisms of the Church hierarchy. To this end, after first delimiting the concepts of criticism and hierarchy, the normative framework applicable to criticism is then described. This framework is essentially composed of canon 212 § 3 (which recognizes freedom of expression) and the canons 209 § 1, 212 § 1 and 223 § 1 (which establish the duties of communion and obedience). Then, the opportunities and dangers of internal criticism in the Church are analyzed. Finally, a series of criteria that may be useful for discerning the lawfulness of internal criticism in the Church is presented.","PeriodicalId":36858,"journal":{"name":"Church, Communication and Culture","volume":"7 1","pages":"415 - 437"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41694823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Technology made it possible for human beings to continue to connect with each other through digital platforms, despite the mandatory preventative lockdown. While the news was full of alerts about the daily case-count and deaths around the world, stories of mostly ordinary people circulated through social networks, mitigating the uncertainty with messages of hope. In this context, the analysis also focuses on the beginning weeks of the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the Covid-19 disease. One of the most important events held by Pope Francis was the extraordinary moment of prayer in time of pandemic in St. Peter’s Square, with the Urbi et Orbi blessing on 27 March 2020. The methodology used quantitative and qualitative techniques based on a strategic sample of English and Spanish tweets published between March and December 2020 with specific keywords and hashtags. The results place value on the importance of Pope Francis’s message, the value of the Urbi et Orbi blessing at the beginning of the pandemic and the symbolic impact of the content, images, and interaction in the communication shared on social media, specifically on Twitter.","PeriodicalId":36858,"journal":{"name":"Church, Communication and Culture","volume":"7 1","pages":"196 - 219"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43669701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The dioceses belong to all continents: two are in North America (Saint Augustine, USA, and Ciudad Victoria, Mexico); two in Africa (Isiro-Niangara, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Owerri, Nigeria); two in Europe (Valencia, Spain, and Tempio-Ampurias, Italy); and one each in South America (Duitama-Sogamoso, Colombia), Oceania (Parramatta, Australia), and Asia (Seoul, South Korea). A quantitative methodology was employed through a questionnaire-survey distributed to the clergy of these diocese, with the goal of learning how they communicated with their faithful and helped them to maintain their life of faith during the period of lockdown and restriction of movement. The survey was conducted online between February and April 2021. Findings show that while the pandemic has reduced the attendance of the faithful at church, priests have responded in various ways, trying to continue spiritual assistance.","PeriodicalId":36858,"journal":{"name":"Church, Communication and Culture","volume":"7 1","pages":"238 - 263"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44967518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results show that secular press publications present an image of Christian churches and other religious authorities as institutions collaborating with state authorities in combating the coronavirus pandemic. There is, however, a noted lack of press attention regarding the involvement of religious bodies in combating the pandemic effects through charity, solidarity, and even worship, however, limited or modified. These findings concern issues that are vital for the image analysis of religious bodies, since the results of press analysis can be used to assess the impact of a crisis situation on the image of Christian churches in the media as well as the relationship between political leaders and church leaders.","PeriodicalId":36858,"journal":{"name":"Church, Communication and Culture","volume":"7 1","pages":"175 - 195"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49341675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This situation has been intensified by the health emergency caused by the Covid-19 virus. Our study aims to provide the keys for the formation of personal judgment in the practical field, so that it can indirectly serve as guidance for the management of information related to the pandemic. We will attempt to illustrate, first, the specificity of practical knowledge, describing its sources and conditions, as well as the scope of practical truth, which such judgment allows us to reach. Secondly, we will point out the factors that positively and negatively influence personal judgment. On the one hand, we will indicate some external elements that hinder or prevent access to information, such as misinformation, disinformation and fake news. On the other hand, we will focus on the internal dispositions of practical judgment, particularly the intellectual and moral virtues. In this context, we will deal in greater detail with prudence as a dianoetic virtue. We will conclude by pointing out the importance of the virtues in achieving critical thinking, and the importance of critical thinking in building stable access to information.","PeriodicalId":36858,"journal":{"name":"Church, Communication and Culture","volume":"7 1","pages":"58 - 75"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44161312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
