It is suggested that many potential application areas exist for these types of sensors. The multiplexed sensors are divided into two types, three-axis 'vector' sensors and sensor arrays. System requirements for each of these are different. For the vector sensor, magnitude and direction information are required and three systems are the maximum number to be multiplexed. Parameters such as magnetic field, acceleration and rotation rate fall into this category. Sensor arrays are typified by the hydrophone application. Distributed sensors based upon POTDR have found application in the power generation industry. With this technique the current passing through large conductors can be measured. Considerable interest is also being shown in the use of distributed sensors for intruder location and for security systems in general. In all of these examples the advantages of the optical fibre make the sensor a viable approach","PeriodicalId":368078,"journal":{"name":"Physics in Technology","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130693753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Physicists compete for jobs with graduates in other disciplines, in particular with engineering graduates. Some of the jobs now done by physics graduates might be performed competently in future by arts graduates or by non-graduate technicians. The author suggests that these are aspects of the 'uncertainty principle' in education and training. Nevertheless, the evidence indicates that the future of British industry will depend on securing an increased number of boys and girls who will have been well educated in maths and physics in particular. At present, there is a chronic shortage of properly qualified maths and physics teachers. If this problem is not tackled with determination, failure to solve it could threaten the future of engineering at graduate and technician level, as well as threatening the future of maths and physics education themselves","PeriodicalId":368078,"journal":{"name":"Physics in Technology","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129958296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
