The novelty of the work relates to the branch of architecture criticism as part of the history of arts, particularly in the context of the historiography of 20th- century modern architecture. This paper is to uncover the various forms of architectural criticism and its agents among the vocational and scientific publications aimed at other architects of the Lithuanian SSR. Using a systematic approach and qualitative research methods, a database of 100 critical articles is constructed. The phenomena of architecture criticism are explored using the theoretical framework of W. Attoe from his book “Architecture and Critical Imagination” (1978). The results of the research brought several understandings. Despite the common belief among professionals that architects should be predominantly the creators of architecture criticism, architects by profession make up only half or less of the total number of texts in the specialized press. The dominating types of architectural criticism are normative and descriptive (excluding the texts that would describe the context of an architectural idea or particular building). There are very few examples of interpretative criticism encountered (except in the thematic group of criticism around interior design). Further discussion of prevalent thematic groups led to the conclusion that architectural criticism in Soviet Lithuania alongside the official “politically allowed criticism” has been using disguised forms of texts. There has been an underlying narrative to promote modernist or simply, new architecture principles using photography with little to no text, indirect speech, and other forms of non-explicit communication. One of the wider goals of this paper is to initiate wider research into the subject of architectural criticism of Soviet Lithuania and also validate the existence of the neglected phenomena using the specific material of professional and academic architectural publications.","PeriodicalId":36795,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sustainable Architecture and Civil Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135870401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is established that the ability of an architectural environment to transmit information and be a communication element allows considering it as a language. Media architecture includes the whole complex of elements, the relationship of which translates a specific idea or demonstrates its absence. Analyzing the informative essence of a city as its language has a number of advantages. Firstly, in this study, the language of a city is considered as a model of its ability to be a carrier of information. Secondly, this approach depicts the communicative properties of urban space best. Thirdly, speech has a direct connection with a person's consciousness, cognitive skills, and manifests itself through the interpretation of certain information by a person. Given this, it can be argued that this study is relevant in clarifying the issues of limiting and structuring information in the environment of a modern city. The theory of media in the architectural environment is based on the analysis of existing examples of media formation at three hierarchical levels: urban space, an architectural object, and a finishing element. This study is conducted in the example of the city of Lviv. Material and mental aspects of media, which form the informative essence of an object or space and directly affect its perception by a person, are identified. This leads to the division of the essence of media architecture and urban spaces into material and mental components. A methodology for analyzing architecture and spaces using a media-linguistic approach, which includes six stages of analysis, has been developed. The application of this approach in design will allow moving from a chaotic environment to creating a conceptual anthropocentric space.","PeriodicalId":36795,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sustainable Architecture and Civil Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135871965","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research took place from October 2022 to January 2023. The main findings of the research outline the issue of urban conservation in terms of urban collective memory. The paper explores the contemporary physiognomy of an urban Asia Minor refugee settlement that comes up against dereliction, uncontrolled building activity and demolitions of the old refugee houses. To explain the significance of these settlements, the paper combines literature review and field work. Field work includes original cartographic depiction of the exact location of the remaining refugee houses as well as documentation through original drawings of typical housing units in the area. The aim of the paper is to put in the forefront the issue of declaration in terms of collective memory in cases where the socio-cultural significance counterweights the architectural value of the buildings.","PeriodicalId":36795,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sustainable Architecture and Civil Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135869545","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Urban public spaces have become popular places for people to relax and socialize while keeping physical distance. Gender and other social identities, on the other hand, have a major influence on people's perceptions of safety in these public places. The goal of this research was to look into the relationship between perceptions of safety, relaxation, and gender in urban public places during the pandemic. The study's findings revealed that women were more likely than men to report feeling unsafe in public places. This result indicates that gender identity influences women's perceptions of safety in public places. Furthermore, women's feelings of insecurity hampered their ability to relax and enjoy these spaces, possibly limiting their access to public spaces and the benefits they provide. There is an obvious interrelation between easily accessible open public spaces and safety The study's findings outline the significance of inclusive design and planning for public spaces in order to guarantee safety and promote well-being.","PeriodicalId":36795,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sustainable Architecture and Civil Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135863248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Egypt, mega housing projects such as \"Dar Misr\" are established to provide apartments for middle-income families. The envelopes of those buildings play a significant role in the increased heat gain of indoor spaces. Therefore, this study aims to assess the thermal performance and calculate the energy savings of five thermal insulation materials available in the market; (Vermiculite, Rockwool, Phenolic Foam, Extruded Polystyrene (XPS), and Polyethylene). The assessment is for those materials installed in the apartment's external walls to find the optimal material that achieves the most extended annual indoor thermal comfort hours and the highest annual energy-saving. An apartment in a typical floor was modeled by DesignBuilder software to calculate the indoor thermal comfort hours and energy consumption for the five alternatives. The results show that thermal insulation materials inside the external walls are pivotal in reducing heat gains and extending comfort hours. The optimal insulation material is XPS which achieved thermal comfort for 33% of the year compared to 28% and 29% by the Phenolic Foam and Rockwool, respectively. Moreover, the XPS saved 9.27% of the annual energy consumption, which is the highest energy-saving ratio compared to Polyethylene (6.21%) and Vermiculite (2.4%).","PeriodicalId":36795,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sustainable Architecture and Civil Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135869703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For field measurements, the Prayer House – The Kaunas Basilica of the Resurrection of Christ, located in Kaunas, Lithuania, was chosen, in which the temperature distribution at different heights (6 m, 8 m, 10 m, 12 m, 14 m, 16 m and 18 m) during the heating season was observed. The Basilica had radiant heaters installed at 5 m height. According to the plan of the Prayer House, CFD model was created, and the temperature distribution of the different heating (radiant heating and floor heating) systems were compared. The IDA-ICE modelling of energy consumption was conducted using the CFD results as a basis, and the economic analysis was performed based on the obtained results. The study confirmed the existence of stratification in high-ceiling buildings.","PeriodicalId":36795,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sustainable Architecture and Civil Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135869751","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Energy consumption in-creases as living standards rise. Efficient heat production, i.e. efficient use of energy, is achieved with optimal boiler load. The second pressing issue is the protection of the environment from pollution. The process of burning different types of fuels to produce heat or energy results in emissions that can have negative impacts on the environment. One of the solutions to improve air quality is to reduce emissions from heating plants during their production. The scientific paper considers the possibility of a preheating and humidification for combustion air system to increase the efficiency of the boiler and reduce the amount of harmful emissions in flue gases. The boiler efficiency values were calculated before and after the installation of the preheating and humidification system for the combustion air, and measurements of the flue gas analysis were carried out using a Testo 350 flue gas analyzer. Calculations and measurements for flue gas analysis have shown that the combustion air preheating and humidification system increases the boiler house efficiency by 15 % and re-duces nitrogen oxide emissions by 70 %.","PeriodicalId":36795,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sustainable Architecture and Civil Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135870756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the target towards Net Zero Emission (NZE) in 2060 must be an obligation in all countries. A Green Building (GB) is a building that meets Building Technical Standards and has significant measurable performance in saving energy, water, and other resources. Applying GB principles by function and classification at each implementation stage will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This study aims to analyze the cost of improvements based on GB assessment, where these improvements are the factors affecting the implementation of the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) regulations from the Indonesian government. The Technical Guidelines for GB Performance, through the Minister of PUPR No.1 of 2022 Republic of Indonesia, is the latest regulation used as the GB concept. Implement Blockchain-BIM and GB using Structural Equation Model - Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) for the analysis. By applying Blockchain-BIM to overcome cost constraints, it has been found that it is possible to increase GB's cost-performance ratio in the retail and commercial estate to 3-3.8% at the basic level, while compared with other ratings is higher up to 2.1%, at which the choice of renewable energy model has a great influence.","PeriodicalId":36795,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sustainable Architecture and Civil Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135870148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study investigated the suitability of waste products from the coke industry as modifying agents for polymer bitumen. The by-product of the coking industry reaches a high level of silicon and is called silicon-containing additive (SCA), the composition of which is similar to the mineral solutions for bitumen. In this article, the results of using SCA as standard additives for modified polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with bitumen waste is presented. Using the Simdist boiling point distribution method, simulated high temperature distillation by gas chromatography, differential thermal (DTA) analyzes, and other methods of physic- chemical properties of bitumen after adding of SCA were    studied. It was revealed that the connection and consumption of additives occurs because of the content of aromatic components, as well as an increase in the consumption of bitumen characteristics. Thus, the presented method for obtaining road surfaces based on PET waste and coke production waste meet the requirements of sustainable development, which implements both a significant use of industrial waste as secondary products and their processing into a new product using an energy-saving technology that reduces the consumption of raw materials and resources.","PeriodicalId":36795,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sustainable Architecture and Civil Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42506987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
