In the 1990s, museum theorists drew attention to the fact that museum visitors play a part in constructing their museum visits and also focused on the importance of the social context in the museum visit. Using examples of interior at the Danish open-air museum Den Gamle By dated to 1950s and 1970s the article analyse how museum space and communications support both the visitors’ experience of their own history and experiences, and the visit to the museum as a social experience. Both can help to strengthen the visitor’s own identity and the learning process which can take place when visitors share their knowledge and experiences. V devadesátých letech muzejní teoretikové poukazovali na skutečnost, že návštěvníci muzea mají podíl na vyznění návštěvy muzea a také se zaměřili na důležitost společenského kontextu při návštěvě muzea. The social museum experience meets both personal and social needs. This aspect of the use of museums is worth considering in the light of how it can be supported in the museum spaces and communications. It is also worth bearing in mind that a normal visit to a museum is in fact a shared social experience. People rarely visit museums alone. Numerous surveys of how visitors use museums have documented that visiting a museum is a joint experience with other people.1 This article focuses on the museum as a social space, and will analyse 1 One of these surveys has collected figures nationwide since 2009 from the majority of Danish museums. Dolak","doi":"10.5817/mub2019-2-2","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5817/mub2019-2-2","url":null,"abstract":"ABSTRAKT: The demise of significant Czech museologist, associate professor Zbyněk Zbyslav Stránský, raised interest in his work and in its competent evaluation. The authors of individual texts mostly agree with each other in their opinions, but sometimes they have different views, which is understandable. However, several opinions clearly show that their authors misunderstood some of Stránský’s fundamental postulates. This text analyses the international discourse and comments on disputable statements. It explains, extends and critically evaluates the concept by Stránský, and thereby shifts the whole studied problem to a higher level. Místo Z. Z. Autoři textů se ve většině svých tvrzení shodují, někdy mají odlišné názory, což je zcela pochopitelné. Objevily se však i názory svědčící o nepochopení některých dosti podstatných postulátů. Tento text mezinárodní diskusi vyhodnocuje, sporná tvrzení komentuje. Vysvětluje, rozšiřuje a kriticky vyhodnocuje Stránského pojetí, a tak celou zkoumanou problematiku posouvá na vyšší úroveň. https://doi.org/10.5817/MuB2019-2-2 opinions, which is understandable. In some cases we can find certain misunderstandings or small mistakes in these texts. Therefore I consider it necessary to analyse the previous discourse, summarize the knowledge and thereby shift the whole studied problem to a higher level. In the core of this text I am dealing with reasons for the rejection of Stránský’s concept rather than with its acceptance. Most authors indeed consider Z. Z. Stránský a significant world-renowned museologist and they accept his approaches with major or minor reservations, in the most cases only partially. General accordance exists that his ideas significantly influenced museology in former Eastern Bloc, inclusive of Yugoslavia. His concept penetrated on a limited scale to Asia and only a bit also to Africa. However, we could also mention Scandinavia or other countries. Stránský’s influence was relatively distinct in Switzerland (Martin Schärer), in West Germany and Austria, above all due to works of professor Friedrich Waidacher1 1 Waidacher’s Handbuch der allgemeinen Museologie was translated into Slovak, Chinese, Ukrainian, Lithuanian and Hungarian, which undoubtedly considerably boosted the dissemination of Stránský’s approaches. Stránský, in my opinion, unfortunately spent too much time commenting on texts of his significant promoters (Waidacher, Schärer), who in fact were influential disseminators of his ideas, although they did it in their own style. Stránský’s review of the book Die Ausstellung. Theorie und Exempel by Schärer consists much empty and critical philosophising, but the reader learns in fact nothing about the content of this book, which, in my opinion, is a very good piece of writing. The question is whether the museums are able to offer an extension to formal education in schools and become herewith their partner. The schoolteachers are trained pedagogues in individual disciplines but they rarely have expert knowledge in these special areas (for example in geology). Moreover, the extent and usability of school collections for educational purposes beyond the scope of regular teaching are considerably limited. Museums have much to offer to the schools; the extension of normal teaching mainly consists in the possibility of object learning, in which the museums find no serious rival due to their extensive collections. They also can offer a greater support to schoolchildren who are gifted in disciplines represented in museums. {"title":"From the ideal to the spectacular : Hellenic antiquity and the discourse of authenticity","authors":"Delia Tzortzaki","doi":"10.5817/mub2019-2-1","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5817/mub2019-2-1","url":null,"abstract":"ABSTRAKT: In countries like Greece, where the material remains of the past play a predominant role in fostering a unifying national identity, the inspirational moment is antiquity. The aura of the authentic enlivens the discussion by fostering strong epistemological and political idioms vis-à-vis heritage applications. The present article argues that the quest for authenticity in Hellenic heritage cuts through different styles, aesthetic approaches and technological means in order to put forth powerful stereotypes which can be traced both in speech and in exhibition contexts and affect the contemporary reception of material remnants. In this view, two generically distinct case-studies are discussed: The Parthenon marbles as presented in the speech of the then Minister of Culture, Antonios Samaras, at the Opening Ceremony of the New Acropolis Museum in 2009, and Digital Miletus, a by now classical virtual reality application featuring the reconstruction of the ancient city of Miletus, at the Foundation of the Hellenic World in Athens around the millennium. While the above examples seem initially opposing in terms of the kind of authenticity they invoke, they underline the same core notion, namely the identification of truths and values which travel, as in a time capsule, inside the ancient remnants. If heritage is to be critically assessed we need to move beyond the notion of finite contexts and unbreakable continuities and understand heritage representations more https://doi.org/10.5817/MuB2019-2-1 kladu vzhledem k typu autenticity, na niž se odvolávají. Oba však sledují stejný cíl, a sice identifikaci skutečností a hodnot, jež jsou obsaženy ve starověkých památkách a cestují časem společně s nimi. Pokud chceme přistupovat ke kulturnímu dědictví kritickým způsobem, musíme nahlížet za hranice neměnných souvislostí a neporušitelných kontinuit a vnímat projevy kulturního dědictví pružněji. Musíme přehodnotit jak jejich formu tak i obsah, protože obě tyto kategorie v sobě skrývají prvky argumentace a nejsou pouze objektivními, neutrálními prostředky sloužícími k zábavě a poučení.
