This study aims to assess higher education students' knowledge of labeling and relate it to demographic factors. This is an exploratory observational study whose data collection was carried out through an online questionnaire, in the period between November and December 2022. In this study, 124 higher education students participated, mostly female (74.2%), living in the Lisbon metropolitan area (97.9%), who did not practice physical exercise/sport (98.4%), and who had no type of food allergy or disease (84.7%). The mean age of the participants was 20.1 ± 1.9 years old. The mean score for knowledge about food labeling was 5 ± 1.8, with a maximum of 8 points. No relationship was found between knowledge about labeling with demographic characteristics. However, the results point to the need to increase knowledge about food labeling, as well as about the interpretation of nutritional information.","PeriodicalId":36701,"journal":{"name":"Biomedical and Biopharmaceutical Research","volume":"378 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84951499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For children to receive accurate information, teachers must have a solid understanding of food and nutrition. This study aimed to assess the level of food and nutrition understanding in elementary school teachers. 81 teachers participated in a cross-sectional observational study. A 9-question survey was built to gauge their level of understanding about food and nutrition, with three levels established: high (≥7 points), moderate (4-6 points), and low (≤3 points). In this research, whereas 79% of instructors taught nutritional principles and 44% had a moderate degree of understanding on food and nutrition, 63% of teachers had poor levels of training in nutrition. The teachers' greatest difficulties were related to the nutritional value of foods, regardless of their years of experience. Teachers who have been teaching for less than five years have a better degree of knowledge in food and nutrition, compared to those who have been teaching for longer (p<0.001). This study supports the idea that elementary school instructors need more dietary education, especially those who have been teaching for more years. The objective of this study was to perform an in-depth analysis of ten modeling environmental tools and to establish the best rationale to assess the impact on environmental safety considering the recent global pandemic scenario and the evolution of the consumer mindset. A literature analysis was performed for the ten modeling environmental tools, and when possible, each was downloaded for comparison. Chesar was the tool that proved to be the easiest to enter data, and it has the more straightforward and direct application steps; thus, it was chosen for the initial assessment of ingredients that demonstrate potential environmental hazards. For high-level tools, it was not possible to establish a comparison for choice, as the models are private and have little data in the literature. Even so, for a more detailed assessment after the first initial assessment via Chesar, iSTREEM could be used. This study delivers important knowledge about the modeling tools and how to establish a rationale for environmental risk assessment. This may be attributed to inadequate participant selection in evaluation studies. The objective of this evidence-based commentary is to examine the inclusion criteria of participants in e-Health interventions for medication adherence. In May 2021, we identified two systematic reviews, encompassing a total of 44 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating e-Health interventions for medication adherence. These interventions were aimed to diabetes (n=10), immunosuppressive therapy (n=6), and cardiovascular diseases (n=29). Participants in interventions utilizing digital apps had a lower mean age compared to those using telephones (53.9 ± 7.5 years vs. 63.4 ± 6.3 years). Most papers (91.0%) did not report participants' level of digital literacy, and educational background was only mentioned in 57.8% of the studies. Exclusion criteria associated with age, education, health conditions, were identified in the assessment of e-Health interventions, while digital literacy was seldom assessed. It is recommended incorporating the assessment and reporting of digital literacy into participant selection procedures in RCTs to address the digital divide and obtain more accurate information regarding the efficacy of e-Health interventions. Importantly, improved antibiotic adherence is associated with the reduction of the risk of antibiotic resistance. Pharmacist communication-based interventions to improve patients’ antibiotic adherence are diverse, such as interviews, education/counselling, the provision of written information or workshops, knowledge assessment, among others. Thus, a protocol of a systematic review to evaluate the impact of pharmacist communication-based interventions on patients’ adherence to antibiotics is presented. The PRISMA-P (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for systematic review protocols) was applied. The detailed project of the present systematic review is already published in Registry Services – Open Science Framework (OSF). The confirmation of a positive impact of communication-based interventions on patients’ antibiotic adherence in community or hospital pharmacies is expected.","PeriodicalId":36701,"journal":{"name":"Biomedical and Biopharmaceutical Research","volume":"25 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84823015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this cross-sectional pilot study was to explore the relationship between weight status and sleep health, physical activity, perception of dietary consumption, and stress among firefighters. The study was conducted in May 2022. An online questionnaire was developed using Google Forms® and shared through social media for data collection. A total of 30 firefighters participated in the study, with the majority being male (60.0%), over 40 years of age (56.7%), and residing in Lisbon (90.0%). The majority of participants were overweight (63.3%), walked for 4 days per week for about 30 minutes, and spent approximately 4 hours in sedentary activities. The median score for sleep health was 18 out of 30 points. Weight status was only positively correlated with age. These results suggest a possible need for the development of health programs targeting firefighters to improve their lifestyles and occupational health, with further studies needed with a larger sample size. However, concerns have arisen over the percutaneous absorption of UV filters. In order to ensure both efficacy and safety, sunscreens need to remain in the outermost layers of the stratum corneum, because their penetration into the dermis can cause systemic effects. Herein, a review was conducted of specialized literature published between 2000 to 2020, clustering studies focused on the skin penetration of UV filters. In this context, different in vitro and in vivo methodologies employed to assess the penetration of such compounds are highlighted, such as those based on tape stripping and diffusion cells. When combined with analytical methods, such as high-performance liquid chromatography, it is possible to trace a profile of the penetration of UV filters and elucidate factors that interfere with this phenomenon. Moreover, studies have been carried out on dissemination strategies that aim to encapsulate the molecules of UV filters, and/or change their physicochemical characteristics, in effort to increase the efficacy and safety of these formulations. Pharmacological management usually prevents its progress even if indirectly. Currently, more alternative treatments based on traditional medicine and medicinal plants are considered. Bauhinia forficata is widely distributed in South America and is used for its hepatoprotective and nephroprotective properties. This study was designed to preliminarily assess the nephroprotective and hepatoprotective effect of the methanol extract of B. forficata leaves (50, 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg, per os) in Swiss albino mice. Acute kidney injury was induced with gentamicin (135 mg/kg, intraperitoneal), followed by determination of creatinine, urea, uric acid, and electrolyte levels in urine and serum. Acute liver damage was induced by acetaminophen (300 mg/kg, intraperitoneal), followed by determination of a serum liver profile of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase. All tested doses of the extract were able to induce a significant reduction in serum creatinine levels, compared to untreated animals. Moreover, the extract effectively prevented the elevation of hepatic enzyme activity induced by acetaminophen. It is concluded that the extract of B. forficata leaves has nephroprotective and hepatoprotective effects in a mouse model of hepato and nephrotoxicity, which is compatible with traditional use.","PeriodicalId":36701,"journal":{"name":"Biomedical and Biopharmaceutical Research","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82251144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
