{"title":"Distant or Close? Two Music Manuscripts from c. 1500 in Comparison","authors":"Paweł Gancarczyk","doi":"10.1484/j.jaf.5.135278","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1484/j.jaf.5.135278","url":null,"abstract":"This article analyzes the links between two manuscripts from the final decade of the fifteenth century: Warsaw, Biblioteka Uniwersytecka, Gabinet Zbiorów Muzycznych, RM 5892 (known as the Wrocław/Breslau Codex) and Segovia, Archivo Capitular de la Catedral, Ms. s.s. In spite of the great geographical distance between Silesia and Castile, where these manuscripts originated, they nonetheless share a relatively large number of compositions. Three reasons for this are suggested: (1) the presence of an international polyphonic repertory; (2) chronological proximity; and (3) a similar purpose and motivation behind the creation of these collections. This article offers a new dating for the main corpus of the Wrocław Codex, to c. 1493-94. It also shows how the two manuscripts are related in both material and repertory to the phenomenon of ‘small folio manuscripts’, a type of musical manuscript that up to now has been thought to be limited to central Europe.","PeriodicalId":36633,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Alamire Foundation","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135736183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Modern ideological concepts and political borders were projected on to historical material and interpreted in terms of a Europe divided by the Iron Curtain. Although musicological research over the past three decades has frequently been confronted with questions of the identity of central Europe and its reintegration into international musicological discourse, recent synthetic studies (e.g., the Cambridge History of Music series) still largely conserve pre-1989 views of music history. Using the Bohemian Codex Speciálník (CZ-HKm 7), this study shows that the construction of a new historical narrative requires a re-evaluation of primary sources. Basic information concerning them, such as dating, must be revised according to current codicological methods, and their historical contexts must be reassessed. Today the Codex Speciálník is recognized as an internationally important source for studying the transmission of polyphony in Europe before 1500. The repertory in its earliest gatherings, dating from c. 1480 or shortly before, has close ties to the court of Emperor Frederick III and the ducal court in Milan. New findings point to central Europe-and Bohemia in particular-as an important area for the cultivation of polyphony, and demonstrate that old clichés framing the region as marginal and behind-the-times must be reconsidered.","PeriodicalId":36633,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Alamire Foundation","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135735367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Responding to the latter side of the equation, the present article investigates Low Countries musical sources from the first half of the sixteenth century with an eye to indigenous versus imported traditions. Special attention is given to the so-called Zeghere van Male partbooks (Cambrai, Le Labo, Mss. 125-28). The results reveal that the Low Countries, like other regions, had their local traditions that were not exported; and that they, like other regions, were not immune from absorbing outside influences.","PeriodicalId":36633,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Alamire Foundation","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135735368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Delving into the connection between the source and the Trent Codices, it uncovers traces of compositional interactions between some of Strahov’s unica and settings of the same texts in Trent 88 (I-TRbc Ms. 1375). The melodic and contrapuntal similarities detected between pairs of settings suggest routine contrapuntal strategies. In turn, this analysis of the relatively simple hymn repertory contributes to reconstructing musical networks in central Europe.","PeriodicalId":36633,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Alamire Foundation","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135736182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
