The principal goal was to determine how the sociocultural context of a computer mediated environment affects the learning experience of its users. By sociocultural it is meant: the prior language learning experience of students, their attitudes and motivation towards learning another language, their cultural and linguistic background, exposure to computers and how these factors interact with one another and have an effect on a computer mediated environment. More specifically, this research has centered on the backgrounds and attitudes of the learners and why they utilize this facility, and what it is that motivates and encourages them to persist in using this learning space. This research is concerned with an area, which has received little attention, one that concentrates on the attitudes towards a computer-enhanced environment by both international and domestic students studying foreign languages in the CALL Facility at the University ofVictoria.","PeriodicalId":366246,"journal":{"name":"The IALLT Journal of Language Learning Technologies","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115201216","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has a wide high-resolutiontouch screen, which enhances input as well as learners’ attention,making them focus on key language features and raising theirawareness. Furthermore, the iPad is compatible with the most recentapplications for the development of interactive skills.The author investigated the impact of iPad on a class of sixth gradersin their first year of learning Italian and compared their learning to anon-iPadded class over two years’ time, first in sixth grade and then inseventh grade. Results show that, thanks to mobile technology, theiPadded sixth graders generally progressed better than the noniPaddedsixth graders, but, remarkably, even better than the noniPaddedseventh graders in oral interactive tasks.","PeriodicalId":366246,"journal":{"name":"The IALLT Journal of Language Learning Technologies","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133342322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mobile app development projects require a widearray of specialized skills that many language teachers do not possess.This article reports on a set of mobile language learning applicationdevelopment projects initiated by language teachers. By settingattainable goals and focusing on collaboration, faculty in theseprojects have been able to take advantage of the new possibilitiesmobile devices offer for language instruction. Faculty adopted Design-Based Research methodologies in an Ecological Constructivistframework in order to design, implement, and test their apps incollaboration with students and faculty from across the campus. Theresults suggest that app development projects are feasible for languageteachers, and that pedagogically sound apps can reduce some of theanxiety associated with learning a foreign language.","PeriodicalId":366246,"journal":{"name":"The IALLT Journal of Language Learning Technologies","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125602818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The characteristics of smartphones and tablet PC devices such as affinity, portability, accessibility and the availability of low cost applications (apps) with various functions have transformed these devices into a realistic means of learning. In fact, it has been reported that many second language (L2) learners have used such language learning apps and evaluated them positively. The adaptation of mobile apps for L2 language education and training has been actively implemented by not only individual users but also educational and business sectors in many countries. Thus, this study explores the effectiveness of smartphone and tablet PC apps for Japanese language learning, focusing on learners of Japanese at a university in Australia. The types of Japanese language learning apps that students have used and their usage are examined, in order to investigate the effectiveness of such apps. This study aims to provide helpful information to L2 educators and learners about the adaptation of mobile devices to assist their language teaching and learning.","PeriodicalId":366246,"journal":{"name":"The IALLT Journal of Language Learning Technologies","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131536125","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
