When Veronica arrives at the warehouse, the degeneration of Seth is apparent: Seth walks on sticks like an old man whose hips and knees have given out; his skin has deteriorated further, his hair is stringy, and his clothing dirty and streaked with that milky ooze. Brundlefly's instincts are now his own, and he does not even realise he is displaying them. Despite the gravity of Seth's situation, he remains true to his human character and never stops being a scientist. The chapter then looks at the deleted scenes, which indicate Cronenberg's initial vision for The Fly was even grimmer and more violent than the version that made it to cinemas — something likely to have undercut the love story and Seth Brundle's affability. The Fly ends with the mercy death of Brundlefly at the hand of his lover; a faultless conclusion for a film that eschews unnecessary embellishment so as not to detract from the strength of its story.","PeriodicalId":366202,"journal":{"name":"The Fly","volume":"171 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133931054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Producer Stuart Cornfeld was introduced to the idea of remaking The Fly by way of playwright/screenwriter Charles Edward ‘Chuck’ Pogue. Cornfeld admits David Cronenberg was his first choice as director for The Fly. However, Cronenberg would not fully enter the picture until further down the track, when Cronenberg's relationship with Dino De Laurentiis on Total Recall had fallen apart. Cronenberg, who had worked with De Laurentiis previously on The Dead Zone (1983), reportedly undertook 13 rewrites of Total Recall but was still unable to reach a point of compromise on the project that satisfied all parties involved. But The Fly story is interesting, even before it became a David Cronenberg film.","PeriodicalId":366202,"journal":{"name":"The Fly","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120949704","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

David Cronenberg's The Fly (1986) can only truly be appreciated within the context of what preceded it. He was not remaking an unknown film; rather, he was taking on one that came with preconceptions and expectations. In considering Cronenberg's The Fly, one can clearly see that remaking the original 1958 film was not on Cronenberg's agenda. While Cronenberg's film should not be compared to any other because it has ‘its own personality, voice and experience’, to consider The Fly's history gives meaning to the simple genius of the central concept: the story of a scientist accidentally turning himself into a fly.","PeriodicalId":366202,"journal":{"name":"The Fly","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128784774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
