Les fonctions et le charactere propre de lesquisse dans la creation assistee par ordinateur sont encore trop peu connus. De meme, la phase de l’esquisse se laisse encore difficilernent approcher dans Ia pedagogie de Ia CAO. Pour pallier a ces manques, I’auteur a choisi deux approches: l'une est d’utiliser les logiciels existants en les detoumant de leur fonctionnalite, l'autre est de chercher la synthese de modeles theoriques de Ia creation architecturale afin de douner a l’esquisse la place qui Iui revient dans la CAO. La premiere approche a ete traduite dans des exercices proposes en atelier (a l’aide du module 3D du logiciel Architrion), dans lesquels les etudiants ont pu donner libre cours a leur imagination. Il leur a toutefois ete demande de tenir compte dun certain nombre de contraintes. Pour la seconde approche, les modeles de Ia conception architecturale selon Lebahar et Chan ont ete retenus comme base de depart etant donne leur complernentarite. Building Form Modelling in Architectural Design Education 建筑设计教育中的建筑形式建模

Oxman","doi":"10.52842/conf.ecaade.1991.x.k4c","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.1991.x.k4c","url":null,"abstract":"The paper describes an approach to architectural design education within the tradition of grammatical studies. It exploits certain attributes of computer modelling and computer graphics programs as an environment to convey architectural knowledge. The formal representation of designs and the manipulation of these representations are proposed as architectural knowledge and one of the foundations of design. Computer-based three-dimensional formal analysis of designs is employed as a technique for the acquisition of knowledge of classes of designs. Through formal analysis certain general models of building form are postulated. The classes of building form models in architecture are elaborated, and their relation to the concept of architectural syntax is discussed. The computational significance of building form modelling is considered, and the relevance of formal modelling in design education is discussed. Architectural Knowledge as a Foundation of Design and Design Education At the workshop meeting of ECAADE '87 in Zurich (Kramel, 1987) a significant topic of discussion was the emerging role of the computer in design education within the architectural curriculum. At this meeting, as well as at subsequent meetings of ECAADE and ACADIA, it had become apparent that a new role was emerging for the computer in architectural schools as an environment for the study of design. What was crystalizing in the late Eighties was the intensive development of computer-based architectural formal studies related to the teaching of design per se. From its research-oriented origins in universities such as UCLA and Carnegie Mellon, the use of the computer as a vehicle for the teaching of architectural design principles has now become well-established as a significant part of the curriculum in many architectural schools (McCullough, Mitchell, Purcell, 1990). Most of this work has retained its design research orientation. It is generally based upon grammars and formal languages, and deals with studies in areas such as composition and transformational operations (Schmitt, 1988; Radford and Stevens, 1987). Recently the work has been collectively referred to as 'grammatical approaches in design education' (Woodbury,1991). Because of the analytical and rigorous orientation to design research which is characteristic of the approach, the dual functions of design education, and the generation of knowledge through design research are both satisfied. Certain of the teacher/researchers in the field have recently begun to change emphasis from ad hoc studies of specific works to the formalization of general formal knowledge in design (Flemming, 1990; Madrazo, 1990; Oxman and Oxman, 1991). In this paper we present an approach to the formalization of general models of building form in architecture. The formulation of the knowledge of building form models is the result of student research within a course which employed computer-based three-dimensional formal analysis in the study of ar","PeriodicalId":366031,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe (eCAADe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123176468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents several of these techniques that are based upan computer-generated images of a 3-dimensional computer model of a design. These new techniques include holography, animating and virtual reality. Some of the techniques that can be improved by CAD systems are paper scale modelling and stereoscopy. The paper describes: - presentation purposes, such as showing a design or explainingfunctional or technical - presentation activities, such as modelling a design or generating images; - presentation techniques, as mentioned above. There exists a relationship between the purpose of a presentation, the presentation techniques employed and the production activities. Because production activities can be very time consuming, the purpose of the presentation and the preferred techniques should normally be well specified at the beginning of a presentation production to make the latter creative productive. However, since most of the comnputer-basedpresenlatian techniques are still new to most designers, ii will be verry difficult to make the right specifications of purpose, techniques and activities at the beginning of the production process. That means that there is a need for a better understanding ofthe techniques and for a more flexible way of producing presentations of designs.Calibre has developed tools to make the production ofpresentations more flexible. One of the tools is a program (ModelCom) that converts different 3-dimensional computer models of designs (design models) into models for different prograins that are able to generate images. Another tool is a program (ImageCom) for converting different generated images into image descriptions for different presentation techniques. These tools are of great importance for Calibre's exploration of various techniques for the presentation of design models. This exploration gives Calibre the unique opportunity to present a varied menu of presentation techniques and related future expectations.","PeriodicalId":366031,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe (eCAADe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116752496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Architecture with Machines, Principles and Examples of CAAD-Education at the Technische Universität München 建筑与机器,原理和caad教育的例子在Technische Universität mnchen

To give you a short overview about what we want to say with this thesis lets have a short - an surely incomplete - trip through the fourth dimension back into the early time of civil engineering. As CAD in our faculty is integrated in the \"Lehrstuhl fur Hochbaustatik und Tragwerksplanung\" (if we try to say it in English it would approximately be \"institute of structural design\"), we chose an example we are very familiar with because of its mathematical background - the cone sections: Circle, ellipse, parabola and hyperbola. If we start our trip two thousand years ago we only find the circle - or in very few cases the ellipse - in their use for the ground plan of greek or roman theaters - if you think of Greek amphitheaters or the Colosseum in Rome - or for the design of the cross section of a building - for example the Pantheon, roman aqueducts or bridges. With the rediscovery of the perspective during the Renaissance the handling of the ellipse was brought to perfection. May be the most famous example is the Capitol in Rome designed by Michelangelo Buonarotti with its elliptical ground plan that looks like a circle if the visitor comes up the famous stairway. During the following centuries - caused by the further development of the natural sciences and the use of new construction materials, i.e. cast-iron, steel or concrete - new design ideas could be realized. With the growing influence of mathematics on the design of buildings we got the division into two professions: Civil engineering and architecture. To the regret of the architects the most innovative constructions were designed by civil engineers, e.g. the early iron bridges in Britain or the famous bridges of Robert Maillard. Nowadays we are in the situation that we try to reintegrate the divided professions. We will return to that point later discussing possible solutions of this problem. But let us continue our 'historical survey demonstrating the state of the art we have today. As the logical consequence of the parabolic and hyperbolic arcs the hyperbolic parabolic shells were developed using traditional design techniques like models and orthogonal sections. Now we reach the point where the question comes up whether complex structures can be completely described by using traditional methods. A question that can be answered by \"no\" if we take the final step to the completely irregular geometry of cable- net-constructions or deconstructivistic designs. What we see - and what seems to support our thesis of the connection between design tools and the results of the design process - is, that on the one hand new tools enabled the designer to realize new ideas and on the other hand new ideas affected the development of new tools to realize them.","PeriodicalId":366031,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe (eCAADe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130600933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently the course structure of a CAD option is simply decided by the staff involved in teaching the option. Many course designs are possible, not all of which are likely to give equal educational returns. There is thus a need for empirical evaluation of existing course structures in order that the relative merits of the various possible designs may be usefully compared. This paper reports the outcome of one such study which focussed on student evaluation of the structure of the CAD option taught at Edinburgh.","PeriodicalId":366031,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe (eCAADe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133380610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This multi-view stereo technique has been successfully applied to many objects and has proved to be more reliable and more accurate than the well known binocular and even trinocular stereo techniques. The method has the following attractive features: (-) Flexibility: Arbitrary positions of an arbitrary amount of different camera views are allowed. (-) Automatic Calibration of each camera view is obtained by a simple procedure. (-) Reliable Stereo Analysis: The matching of corresponding image features of different images relies on a basic paradigm of Hypothesis Prediction and Validation. (-) Knowledge Base: Heuristics can be applied to correct the object reconstruction. (-) CAD-lnterface: The 3D description of the reconstructed object can automatically transferred via DXF to a CAD-system. (-) Low Costs: No special and expensive technical equipment like a laser or an UV rangefinder is necessary. A camera, a PC with CAD-system and a digitizing device like a digitizing tablet with a pointing pen are sufficient.","PeriodicalId":366031,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe (eCAADe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123332523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
