The Preface to Volume I on the war losses of the Town\u0000Hall of the Main City of Gdańsk by the Director of the Museum\u0000in Gdańsk Waldemar Ossowski, contains reflections essential\u0000for the discussed issue.\u0000The three-volume series opens with the War Losses of the\u0000Town Hall of the Main City of Gdańsk (Vol. I). Briefly, the most\u0000essential facts have been highlighted in the story of its raising,\u0000and the functions of the major Town Hall interiors, both sumptuous\u0000and serving as offices, have been described: the Grand\u0000Hallway, the Grand Room called Red or Summer Room, the\u0000Small Room of the Council called Winter Room, the Grand\u0000Room of the City Council, the Treasury, and the Deposit Room.\u0000In the final months of WW II, Gdańsk lost about 80% of its most\u0000precious historic substance within the Main City. As early as in\u0000April 1945, the search for and the recovery of the dispersed\u0000cultural heritage began.\u0000War Losses of the Artus Manor and the Gdańsk Hallway in\u0000Gdańsk (Vol. 2) begins with a sepia photograph from 1879. As\u0000of October 1943 to January 1945, the following took place:\u0000dismantling together with signing and numbering of the objects,\u0000packing into wooden chests, and evacuation to several\u0000localities outside Gdańsk. It has already been ascertained\u0000that as early as in mid-June 1942, some dozen of the most\u0000precious historic monuments were evacuated from the Artus\u0000Manor, of which several items have not been recovered: late-\u0000-mediaeval paintings (Boat of the Church, Siege of Marienburg,\u0000Our Lady with Child, and Christ, Salvator Mundi), several elements\u0000from the four sets of tournament armours from the section\u0000of the Brotherhood of St Reinold, the sculpture Saturn\u0000with a Child, the sculpture group Diana’s Bath and Actaeon’s\u0000Metamorphosis, as well as some dozen elements of the décor\u0000of the Grand Hall. All these historic pieces were transferred to\u0000the village of Orle (Germ. Wordel) on the Sobieszewo Island\u0000on 16 June 1942. Only fragments of tournament armours have\u0000been recovered: they were found at various locations under the\u0000circumstances hard to clarify many years later.\u0000The most extensive war losses have been presented for\u0000the Uphagen House (Vol. 3). The majority of the gathered art\u0000works, the interior equipment and usable objects essential in\u0000the burgher’s tenement house transformed into a museum in\u0000the early 20th century have not been found, thus they have not\u0000returned to their original location.\u0000\u0000

The winning design is\u0000analysed; apart from the arranging of the area of the former\u0000camp, it also envisaged raising of a museum, the latter stage\u0000already completed with the building opened to the public\u0000in 2020. The concept of ‘commitment space’ is proposed by\u0000the Author as best characterising a memorial site created on\u0000the premises of the former Nazi concentration camps and\u0000death camps for the people of Jewish descent. As a departure\u0000point, earlier examples of commemorating similar sites\u0000are recalled, beginning with the early monuments from the\u00001940s, through the 1957 competition for the International\u0000Monument to the Victims of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Camp,\u0000the latter of major impact on the process of the redefinition\u0000of monuments. The then awarded design of the The Road\u0000Monument by Oskar Hansen and his team, however unimplemented\u0000owing to the protest of former Auschwitz prisoners,\u0000became from that time onwards a benchmark for subsequent\u0000concepts. Also the mentioned memorial design on the area of\u0000the former Belzec extermination camp from 2004 is related to\u0000James E. Young’s concept of a counter-monument.\u0000The main subject of the paper’s analysis is, however, the\u0000reflection on means thanks to which the currently mounted\u0000Museum and Memorial Site in Sobibór, including the permanent display at the newly-raised Museum, become\u0000‘commitment space’ for contemporary public on different\u0000perception levels of their multi-sensual activity essential\u0000in the process of remembrance.\u0000\u0000
