It is known that passive radar output is improved by preprocessing both surveillance and reference channels. This study examines how quantisation of a real data set affects the ability of preprocessing to improve passive radar output, using metrics based on radar ambiguity surfaces to quantify performance. It is found that the benefits of preprocessing are achieved at quantisation levels well below the original level of the ADC.","PeriodicalId":365285,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Radar","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130032840","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the analysis is limited to the conventional Stripmap mode of such radar satellites. The occurrence of satellite passes in Stripmap high-resolution mode is however not as frequent as passes in ScanSAR mode, hence the motivation to exploit ScanSAR mode illuminations by opportunistic receiver. In ScanSAR mode imaging, a burst-mode resolution enhancement method has been developed to enhance the cross-range resolution performance by exploiting the sidelobe emissions of the beams illuminating the adjacent sub-swaths. In this paper, the impact of this method on the interferometric performance is evaluated in the novel application of bistatic interferometry using cross-range resolution-enhanced burst-mode images.","PeriodicalId":365285,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Radar","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130505880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system is built using the Defence Science & Technology Organisation's (DSTO) automated target detection software system known as the Analysts' Detection Support System (ADSS). The ADSS is flexible and allows the combination of many different modules in parallel as well as sequential pipelines. This paper discusses a particular system implemented in the ADSS to detect ships in RADARSAT-2 ScanSAR Narrow dual-polarisation imagery. The imagery has been well ground-truthed and detection performance is presented in the form of ROC curves. A particular aspect of the problem that is considered in detail is how best to combine the HH and HV polarisation channels in the pre-screening stage.","PeriodicalId":365285,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Radar","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126300401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The advantage of a multi-mode compact size radar with low power consumption and lightweight design is the possibility to implement it on small manned or unmanned platforms with limited payloads capability. This allows fast and low cost deployment of the system to areas of interest. Multipath propagation over sea surface is used to retrieve the height information for each target reflectors. Firstly, radar raw data with multipath propagation are simulated. The back-scattered electric field from a marine scene is predicted with physical models for the environment and the target. The scene is made of given wind conditions, a linear sea surface and a boat, as a set of point reflectors. Multipath propagation is included with the so-called Four-Path Model. Secondly, height estimation of target reflectors is realized by estimating temporal delays between neighbouring paths of the multipath propagation pattern. Performances of the height estimation algorithm for only one reflector are studied with regards to noise levels.","PeriodicalId":365285,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Radar","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122416961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since there is no requirement for dedicated spectrum allocation, Commensal Radars are gaining interest as an alternative to conventional, monostatic, active radar for applications such as air traffic control. Moves by governments to charge for spectrum usage is a growing concern for operators. Commensal radars have, until recently, been crippled by direct signal interference, limiting dynamic range [1]. Traditionally the CR system will produce bistatic detections by recording the reference and surveillance channels together at the same site with a multi-channel receiver. The multi-channel receiver ensures relative phase stability and inherent synchronicity between the 2 channels for the purpose of cross-correlation, to recover time delay and Doppler shift of the target(s). This configuration makes it difficult to use site selection to reduce the interference in the surveillance channel (e.g. by means of terrain shielding) as the reference antenna always needs to have Line of Site (LoS) to the illuminator. The “Separated Reference” [2] configuration was thus developed to allow the reference and surveillance antennas to be placed at widely separated sites (10s to 100s of km). Each receiver is equipped with a Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) stabilised oscillator to maintain relative channel synchronicity and provide accurate time stamping to allow the combing of many bistatic baselines. The separated reference configuration allows each antenna's location to be optimised purely for the detection function. This paper reports on some of the results and performance improvements obtained with field testing the separated reference configuration, beyond what was initially published [2].","PeriodicalId":365285,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Radar","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123999085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These new ATR (Automatic Target Recognition) problems are motivated by new data collection capabilities, in which airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems are able to interrogate a scene, such as a city, persistently and over a large range of aspect angles. Learning and exploiting the additional information provided by wide-aspect signatures is key to developing successful algorithms. In this paper, we study manifold learning methods to learn informative projections of the feature space for ATR algorithm design, which is also amenable to performance prediction and analysis.","PeriodicalId":365285,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Radar","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115425335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For an accurate reconstruction of the scene of interest, a huge amount of measurements are required. Thus wideband signals with large array apertures are required to generate high resolution images. This paper describes how the raw data is processed using back-projection algorithm in order to reconstruct a 2-D image with the help of FPGA. It also deals with the practical advantages of back projection algorithm compared to other beamforming algorithms. The raw data is generated using stepped frequency continuous wave radar.","PeriodicalId":365285,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Radar","volume":"34 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115751030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It argues that it is better that this separation is recognised for what it is rather than pretending it does not exist. Instead, it argues that this separation can be the stimulus for developing new ways of assessing radar designs which although not directly related to a customer's explicit requirements, may yet lead to the design of better radars in the longer term.","PeriodicalId":365285,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Radar","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130829245","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Translation from the natural domain-specific structure of problem description to the computer formulation is often a time consuming and error-prone exercise. As signal processing becomes more sophisticated, there is a need to codify its basic tools, thus allowing the researcher to spend more time on the challenges specific to a particular application. In this paper, we describe the design of Dauphin, a domain-specific programming language. Dauphin ultimately aims to extend the power of signal processing researchers by allowing them to focus on their research problems while simplifying the process of implementing their ideas. In Dauphin, the basic algorithms of signal processing become the standard function calls and are expressed naturally in terms of predefined signal processing primitives such as random variables and probability distributions.","PeriodicalId":365285,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Radar","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125286061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
