The introduction of an azobenzene group can extend the possible applications to other fields, such as optical memories. In this work, a thiophenic monomer with an azobenzene moiety at the 3-position of the thiophene ring was synthesized by esterification reaction between the commercial dye disperse red 1 (DR1) and 3-thiopheneacetic acid. The UV-Vis spectra of polymer in solution were obtained and used to study the possible solvato- and thermochromic properties of the polymer. The thermochromic property was analyzed in the temperature interval of 10 to 70 /spl deg/C. The solvents used in the solvatochromic study were hexane, chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, toluene, acetone, methanol, acetonitrile and dimethylformamide.","PeriodicalId":364651,"journal":{"name":"2005 12th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"20 23","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113979699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

PPV spin-coating multilayers were deposited on glass covered with indium thin oxide (ITO) anode using the precursor polymer route thermal converted at 200 /spl deg/C and under vacuum. On the top of the PPV films, aluminum thin film was evaporated and used as cathode to obtain a typical polymer light emitting diode structure. The AFM images were used to analyze the height distribution; the results show clearly the interaction with the substrate for low number of layers. In the case of thick films (5 layers) the polymer surface is more close to a random surface, indicating the loose of the interaction with the substrate. The physical parameters that characterizes the quality of the polymer diode, where also analyzed. The current vs. voltage curves display an increase in the operating voltage with the increment of the polymer layers. However, the probability of short curt decrease substantially for thick devices. The photoluminescence spectra present a decrease in the vibronic region associated with film disorder and/or intrinsic structural defects. The mean conjugation length seams to be similar for all thickness.","PeriodicalId":364651,"journal":{"name":"2005 12th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125665454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In organic semiconductors an unusual voltage dependences of the electromechanical strain is observed: The converse electromechanical response follows a power law dependence S/spl prop/V/sup /spl alpha// of the mechanical strain S versus the applied voltage V, with an exponent /spl alpha/= 1.5. The power law exponent is in between traditional linear piezoelectricity and quadratic electrostriction. The experimental finding is a direct consequence of the strongly non-uniform electric field distribution within the Schottky contact arrangement. Electromechanical responses of organic Schottky devices appear to be of fundamental interest for the investigation of non-uniform electric field distributions. The experiments also suggest an unusual electrostrictive behavior in all materials with spatially nonuniform electric field distributions, a situation usually encountered in most space charge electrets.","PeriodicalId":364651,"journal":{"name":"2005 12th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134223544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These enzymatic electrodes can be applied for determination of phenolic compounds from pesticides. The working electrode, FTO, was initially modified with a thin PPY film electrodeposited in a non-aqueous medium solution. The pre-deposited FTO/PPY films allowed us to obtain thicker and homogeneous PPY-PPO films by cyclic voltammetry in an aqueous medium solution. The enzyme, PPO, was immobilized onto FTO/PPY films by electropolymerization of pyrrole in the presence of crude PPO extract at a fixed amount. The PPY-PPO films exhibited a high sensitivity for catechol in solution and a highly selective response at very low concentrations of catechol. A detection limit of around 10 nmol L/sup -1/ for catechol was estimated for PPY-PPO films.","PeriodicalId":364651,"journal":{"name":"2005 12th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"407 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132578993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With modest temperature variations, electron energies are shown to be sufficient to produce the characteristic X-rays from niobium in the crystal and from an adjacent copper foil. We report using these energetic electrons to create the patterned electret state in ETFE (Ethylenetetrafluoroethylene) and in FEP (Tetrafluoroethylene-hexa-fluoropropylene). Temperature sufficient to cause electron emission was established in a LiNbO3 crystal near or in contact with the polymer films. The persistent negative charge near the surface of the films could then be measured nondestructively with a capacitive probe, which we have developed for other electret applications. Photogalvanic electron emission produced by light illumination of the doped photosensitive LiNbO3 crystal was also tested for the electret pattern formation. The charge density injected into the polymer inferred from our measurements is limited by the maximum energy of the pyroelectrically and photogalvanically emitted electrons since the electret field opposes the pyroelectric and photogalvanic field. The density and spatial distribution of charges injected by the pyroelectricity of LiNbO3 into TEFLON electrets are consistent with a selffocusing effect observed in a vacuum by the authors of reference","PeriodicalId":364651,"journal":{"name":"2005 12th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116719003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We followed up the evolution of this early physical damage into chemical damage within human cells. The induced chemical lesions result in biological effects including the initiation of programmed cell death, apoptosis, a mechanism resulting in extensive disruption of the external cell membranes. Using sensitive bio-methodologies we revealed that the early DNA damage was finally initiating apoptosis only when the damage was overwhelming intrinsic repair mechanisms. Finally, we were able to study the early stages of membrane alteration, associated with apoptosis, by measuring modifications in the dielectric properties of the cell membrane. It was found that in cells from donors with the chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL-cells), which exhibit a higher frequency of apoptosis, the values of the real and the imaginary part of the dielectric permittivity, e*, i.e. e' and e\" respectively, and of the alternate field specific conductivity, s/sub ac/ as a function of frequency, were higher than those of the healthy donors, in which apoptosis occurs at very low frequency.","PeriodicalId":364651,"journal":{"name":"2005 12th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123664739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These polymeric materials have been utilized mainly because of their good optical transparence, good resistance to ionizing radiation and heat diffusion. Thin thermoluminescent films (200/spl mu/m) were prepared by casting and irradiated with gamma and X rays in the presence of human phantoms and metallic standards. The radiographic images were generated in a special device designed to heat the sample to CaSO/sub 4/:Mn main TL peak temperature (136/spl deg/C). The emitted light was collected by a charged coupled device (CCD) camera. The good quality of the obtained radiographic images have demonstrated the feasibility of using TL materials immersed in polymeric matrix as an alternative way to obtain X ray digital images, which are commonly produced by photoluminescence phosphors and X ray sensitive CCD cameras. This investigation has shown that combining new high sensitive TL materials with CCD cameras which presents high response in the blue spectrum range could lead thermoluminescent films to show the same or even better performances than conventional digital radiographic devices.","PeriodicalId":364651,"journal":{"name":"2005 12th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123769912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The resulting material, which carries positive and negative charges on the internal void surfaces is called a ferroelectret. Ferroelectrets behave like typical ferroelectrics, hence they provide a novel class of ferroic materials. The soft foams are strongly piezoelectric, and can be used in a wide range of applications as transducers for interconverting mechanical and electrical signals. A review on the preparation of cellular polymers by physical foaming (extrusion, biaxial stretching and controlled inflation by pressure treatments), on the charging by \"microstorms\", on the piezo- and pyroelectric properties and on analogies to ferroelectric materials is given. The huge potential of internally charged cellular space-charge electrets is illustrated with a brief tour d'horizon through selected applications.","PeriodicalId":364651,"journal":{"name":"2005 12th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126354218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
