The steps in the synthesis involved transesterification of palm kernel oil to produce a methyl ester, followed by epoxidation and then the grafting of side chains by esterification with propionic and butyric anhydride. The dielectric and thermal properties of the ester derivatives were analyzed and compared with the methyl ester. The melting point of the ester derivatives were found to reduce with side chain attachment and antioxidant improved its thermal stability. The dielectric loss was dominated by mobile charged particles and the chemical modification appeared to increase the rate at which electric double layer was formed at the electrode-liquid interface. The esters possessed excellent breakdown strengths suggesting that the processing to optimize their physical properties did not have a negative influence on their electrical breakdown strength. This product may prove useful as an insulation fluid in Electrical Power Transformers.","PeriodicalId":364451,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Dielectric Liquids","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131773705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moisture sensor measurements and absolute water content determination by Karl Fisher titration method were performed under controlled laboratory conditions to investigate solubility models of different types and conditions of mineral transformer oils. Results of experiments demonstrate that preset moisture solubility model of the moisture sensor affects accuracy of water content determination. Test setup and optimised procedure for verification and calibration of the moisture sensor with oil-specific solubility parameters is described, tested and evaluated. This allows higher accuracy of on-line water content monitoring in operating transformers under changing temperature conditions.","PeriodicalId":364451,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Dielectric Liquids","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129803522","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Inductors were placed at a distance of 15.875 mm apart. S12 parameters were measured and used as an indicator to the strength of coupling between the two inductors. The pH of the electrolyte solution was reduced from 4.2 to 0.2, A shift of 3.5 MHz in the frequency at which maximum coupling occurs was observed for the corresponding pH change. The system was also simulated using a Finite Element package. A discussion on the relevance of the simulated data and experimental values is offered. The design discussed in this paper has the potential of being used in monitoring conductive electrolyte solutions and qualitative monitoring of chemical reactions.","PeriodicalId":364451,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Dielectric Liquids","volume":"164 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121622187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, the electric field strength and its time transition in PFAE / Pressboard composite insulation system??under charged oil flow were directly measured by using Kerr electro-optic technique. We found that the electric field was generated by space charges in PFAE and was temporally changed with charge behavior. By comparison with high charging mineral oil, we clarified that the feature of the charge behavior in PFAE was similar to that in the mineral oil, but the behavior of electric field was different due to the variation of electric properties such as permittivity, relaxing time and charge density.","PeriodicalId":364451,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Dielectric Liquids","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121235270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The full set of governing equations is directly solved using a finite volume method. In this paper we first heat from the lower electrode and apply the electric potential when the thermal steady state is obtained. Only the case of strong injection of electric charges is considered. The flow pattern and Nusselt number strongly depend on the following non dimensional characteristic parameters: electrical parameter T, Rayleigh number Ra, Prandtl number Pr and mobility parameter M. The electro-convective flow structure is analysed in a rectangular cavity of length 2H, where the pure thermo-convection gives rise to two rolls whereas the pure electro-convection (with injection) gives a four roll pattern. The combined effect of both electric and thermal field on the flow patterns and on Nusselt number is analyzed for different values of Pr and M.","PeriodicalId":364451,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Dielectric Liquids","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127781516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We describe here the build-up of an experimental set-up designed to investigate the critical coalescence conditions in the case of two free water droplets in an oil shear flow under the action of an applied electric field. Drop pairs will be injected in a Poiseuille flow to study, by optical means, their relative motion, deformation and possible coalescence. Important part of this preliminary work concerns the injection of controlled charge free drop pairs using a newly developed EHD actuation technique.
