The sensing principle is based on the well-known Beer-Lambert principle where transmitted modulated signal from the sample is captured by the ambient light sensor (ALS) of the phone and correlates its signal intensities with the concentration of nitrite present in the samples. The results obtained with the smartphone sensor is found to be agreed well with the laboratory-grade spectrophotometer.","PeriodicalId":363857,"journal":{"name":"2022 Workshop on Recent Advances in Photonics (WRAP)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122681264","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work presents hydrothermally deposited zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods optical fiber sensor for measuring the level of adulteration in fuels. The presence of kerosene in petrol and diesel alters the refractive index (RI) of adulterated fuel; therefore, optical fiber sensors are capable of measuring RI used for adulteration detection. The proposed fiber sensor's highest average sensitivities obtained for petrol and diesel adulteration are 0.126 dB/% and 0.089 dB/%, respectively in the kerosene concentration range of 0-30%.","PeriodicalId":363857,"journal":{"name":"2022 Workshop on Recent Advances in Photonics (WRAP)","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116366916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
