Specimens used in this study were the ovaries and testes of fish collected in the Mekong Delta from April to July 2022. Organs at five different stages for each sex (ovary diameter from 1.16 cm in stage I to 4.04 cm in stage V; testis diameter from 0.42 in stage I to 2.39 in stage V) were studied in this procedure. The results showed that both ovaries and testes needed to be fixed at 4% formol for 24 h and under running water for eight hours. Ovaries and testes were then immersed in 500 ethanol for 24 h to initiate dehydration. Results showed that the time for dehydration and paraffin infiltration was longer in the ovary (26 to 55 h across stages) than in the testis (25 to 26 h across stages). The mean staining time of the ovary was 1.5 min (stage I) to 3.5 min (stage V) in Hematoxylin and 50 s (stage I) to 140 s (stage V) in Eosin. Whereas the staining time of testis was shorter, 1 min (stage I) to 3 min (stage V) in Hematoxylin and 30 s (stage I) to 90 s (stage V) in Eosin. This study provides a reference for further studies on the histological structure of fish gonads. These results could be applied to fish species inside and outside the Mekong Delta.","PeriodicalId":36378,"journal":{"name":"Veterinary Integrative Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45967660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 353 feather follicle samples were collected from 50 unvaccinated chicken flocks for Marek’s disease to investigate prevalent MDV-1 by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The four represent strains were chosen for meq gene sequencing. The results revealed that 26 out of 353 samples were positive for MDV-1 accounting for 7.37%. There were significant differences in the prevalence of MDV-1 on chickens among districts (P<0.05). The Meq protein of the four strains (VT, CD, PD, and TL) contained 20.14% proline and three regions of proline repeats. Besides, all four strains occurred with amino acid point mutations. These strains had only a substitution of proline at position 217 as well as interruption of consecutive proline at site 2. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that these strains were within a group relating to virulent Italian isolates.","PeriodicalId":36378,"journal":{"name":"Veterinary Integrative Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43553305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 16 crossbred pigs, half females and half males, were randomly assigned to 2 dietary treatments. This experiment lasted 9 weeks and included grower and finisher periods. The experimental diets in each period were a standard diet (control) and the standard diet supplemented with green tea extract at 500 mg/kg diet. Dietary supplementation with green tea extract did not affect the animal performance and meat quality parameters. However, dietary green tea extract improved the oxidative stability of the LTL muscle during storage at 4 °C for 6 d. Sensory characteristics were not impacted by green tea extract supplementation. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of pig diets with green tea extract at 500 mg/kg diet can be used to prevent lipid oxidation in pork.","PeriodicalId":36378,"journal":{"name":"Veterinary Integrative Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48256550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its effectiveness in treating inflammatory diseases, digestive disorders, and cancer in tropical and subtropical countries was introduced, especially in field of folk medicine. However, this plant species has not been studied widely in Vietnam, especially for its biological activities. This study was done to determine the antioxidant capacity of P. pellucida by using in vitro and in vivo methods, as well as its inhibitory ability to α-amylase enzyme activity. The total polyphenolic and flavonoid contents of P. pellucida extract were reported to be 359.91±0.77 mg GAE/g and 200.28±1.23 mg QE/g extract, respectively. The results showed the in vitro antioxidant activity of P. pellucida extract in four methods, including DPPH, and ABTS.+, RP and TAC, had EC50 values of 730.34 μg/mL, 84.33 μg/mL, 95.28 μg/mL, respectively, and Abs0.5 value of 114.73 μg/mL. Under H2O2-induced oxidative stress, fruit flies that were raised in the feed medium supplemented with a concentration of 1 mg/mL of P. pellucida extract showed their average survival time, 50% survival time, and 10% survival time at 1.6 times, 1.8 times, and 1.62 times, respectively, higher than those of the control treatment. The ability to inhibit the α-amylase activity in P. pellucida extract was determined with an EC50 value of 115.32±2.65 μg/mL compared with the commercial drug of 18.67±0, 01 μg/mL. The research results showed that P. pellucida is a potential species in the study of natural compounds with antioxidant and antidiabetic activities.","PeriodicalId":36378,"journal":{"name":"Veterinary Integrative Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47720319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Those strains were also analyzed for the presence of antibiotic resistance genes by PCR assay, and their genetic relationship by ERIC-PCR assay. The results of antimicrobial susceptibility testing showed that those strains were sensitive to most of the examined antibiotics, but were relatively high resistance to ampicillin (64.10%), and colistin (53.85%). Those E. coli strains could be resistant against one to eight antibiotics with 22 resistance patterns obtained. Moreover, those E. coli strains harbored one to seven antibiotic resistance genes. Gene tetA (51.28%) and blaampC (48.72%) were detected frequently while gene tetB, blaCMY, and cat1 were not found in those E. coli strains. A total of 21 combined patterns of antibiotic resistance genes were recorded, and the most frequent combined pattern was blaampC+tetA (12.82%). ERIC-PCR analysis revealed that each E. coli serotype exhibited various genetic patterns with 40%-100% of similarity. The most elevated number of patterns were in E. coli O157 (nine patterns), followed by E. coli O121 (six patterns). The prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes and diverse genetic characteristics in those E. coli strains originated from cattle constitute potential risks to local health in the Mekong Delta.","PeriodicalId":36378,"journal":{"name":"Veterinary Integrative Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46090146","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To determine the effects of dietary OTM supplement during pre- and postpartum with timed artificial insemination (TAI) protocol on steroid hormones, antioxidant enzymes, and reproductive performances in dairy cows. Prepartum Holstein cows (n = 60) were randomly assigned to received either a control diet or OTM supplemented for 42 days. Both groups were fed the same total mixed ration, but were supplemented with 5 g/head/d OTM (Bioplex®) in the treatment group. Blood and follicular fluid samples were collected to determine progesterone (P4), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and estradiol (E2) concentrations. Cows fed OTM had better placental expulsion period, milk yield, and reproductive performance parameters (day to first ovulation and estrus, percentage of first estrus and size of preovulatory follicle) than control cows (P < 0.05). Cows fed OTM affected (P < 0.05) the serum concentration of P4 on days 12, 15, 18, 21, and 42 after TAI. Follicular fluid concentrations of E2 in large follicle in OTM cows were greater than control cows (336.3 and 376.9 ng/mL; P < 0.05). Cows supplemented with OTM had greater serum SOD and GSH-Px activities than control cows (15.5 vs. 10.6 U/mL and 12.1 vs. 9.9 U/mL; P < 0.05). In conclusion, supplements with OTM improved uterine and placental health, steroid hormones concentrations, and antioxidant enzyme activities but did not improve conception rate in dairy cows.","PeriodicalId":36378,"journal":{"name":"Veterinary Integrative Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47371044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, a total of twenty P. aeruginosa isolates were isolated from 40 pet Chinese stripe-necked turtles and examined for their antimicrobial and heavy metal resistance properties. All isolates were multidrug resistance by scoring multiple antimicrobial resistance indices ≥0.2. In the disc distribution test, 100% resistance to ampicillin and oxacillin were detected. In addition to that, 14 (70%) isolate demonstrated amoxicillin resistance. Imipenem, fosfomycin, gentamycin, tobramycin and piperacillin resistance were detected in 40%, 15%, 20%, 10% and 5% of the isolates, respectively. The ESBLs gene that predominated in this study was blaSHV (55%), followed by blaTEM (50%), blaCTX (10%) and blaOXA (5%). The most frequent aminoglycoside resistance gene in this study was aac(6´)-Ib (40%). Class1 integron integrase gene intI1 and class 1 integron gene cassette gene aadA1 were detected in 45% and 35% of the isolates, respectively. All P. aeruginosa isolates demonstrated Cu and Cd resistance. CzcA and CopA genes were detected in 65% and 30% of the isolates, respectively. These findings reveal the presence of pet turtle-born P. aeruginosa can be a potential risk to public health and cannot be excluded as a non-nosocomial source of infections.","PeriodicalId":36378,"journal":{"name":"Veterinary Integrative Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42626093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These parameters reflect changes in an animal's physiological condition. Therefore, this study examined the hematological profiles of Awassi ewes with single and twin pregnancies during pregnancy and postpartum. A total of 232 sexually mature and healthy ewes (123 with single pregnancies and 109 with twin pregnancies) between the ages of 3 and 4 years were included in the current study. The sheep's blood was collected and hematological tests were conducted immediately on the samples. Results revealed variation in hematological parameters between ewes during pregnancy based on litter size. Twin-pregnant ewes had significantly higher amounts of RBC, PCV %, MCH, and MCHC during pregnancy months as compared to single-pregnant ewes. Compared to single pregnancies, Awassi ewes with twin pregnancies had higher leukocytes, lymphocytes, granulocytes, lymphocytes %, and granulocytes % than those with a singleton. Logistic regression confirmed that litter size contributes to the increase in hematological parameters. In conclusion, Awassi ewes with twin pregnancies exhibited an increase in the counts of leukocytes and erythrocytes constituents. This study provided valuable information about the association of twin-pregnant ewes with hematological parameters that could be used in sheep breeding and reproduction to improve diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment in the field.","PeriodicalId":36378,"journal":{"name":"Veterinary Integrative Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47119976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
