{"title":"Preservice special education teacher candidates’ knowledge of and willingness to implement a universal design for learning .","authors":"أريج علي","doi":"10.21608/mtkh.2023.326899","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21608/mtkh.2023.326899","url":null,"abstract":"Educators in inclusive sittings can respond to students’ diverse needs by adopting the Universal Design of Learning (UDL) framework. Therefore, preparing preservice teachers to integrate UDL principles and related guidelines is essential to strengthen their ability to accommodate the diverse academic, behavioral, and social needs of all students, including students who identified with disabilities. Because there is limited literature on preservice teachers’ preparation for UDL, this quantitative study was carried out to explore preservice special education teachers’ knowledge of the UDL framework and their willingness to apply it. An online survey was administered to 73 preservice special education teacher candidates with and without disabilities. The overall results indicated that the preservice special education teachers who do not have disabilities demonstrated more knowledge of the philosophical basis for UDL than the preservice special education teachers who have disabilities. All the participants had appropriate knowledge of the UDL principles, according to the following order: multiple meanings of engagement, multiple meanings of representation, then multiple meanings of action and expression. The results also indicated that preservice special education teachers were willing to apply practices pertinent to UDL.
