Such information delivery in speech is obviously expected to have a desirable adjacency relation within the confines of the communication channel, so that the interlocutors could achieve a very effective discourse of giving and receiving a better response system. This act of turn-taking relation is held supreme in all linguistic situations, but does not so obtain in all communicative situations. Within Ghanaian context, this study seeks to look into various discoursal roles and diversities that the expression ‘I’m coming’ fulfils in different communicative situations to champion a reflective course of interlocutors. In doing this, the study adopts Wilson and Sperber’s (1995) Relevance Theory, which sees every speech event to be dictated by different communicative factors. It also attempts to examine how meaning is derived and interpreted to suit its rightful context of communication in human discourse. Data used for the study was derived from a primary source where the researchers observed the use of ‘I’m coming’ in different social contexts. The study observes that, in Ghanaian socio-pragmatic contexts, ‘I’m coming’ could express diverse definitive roles and that, even though, it has become a general expression, it is genuinely used to provide different meanings in different situations.","PeriodicalId":362245,"journal":{"name":"CLAREP Journal of English and Linguistics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131204695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper focused on portraying how the patriarchal society in which both male and female genders find themselves tends to be the ultimate tool defining and creating in their psyche what strength and weakness is, as such, the differences in their journeys. This is to map psychosocial ‘cross-gender’ journeys, and how these journeys influence their mental and physical well-being. This paper concluded with the discovery that, while a male gender returns home to rediscover the unhomely home, the female gender is not given the chance. Hers is rather redirected, lest she remain unmarried, single, or termed promiscuous.","PeriodicalId":362245,"journal":{"name":"CLAREP Journal of English and Linguistics","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134442555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Writers engage in the use of particular rhetorical structure devices to advance arguments and negotiate knowledge in order to persuade and convince an academic audience. This corpus based study examined the rhetorical schemeta (e.g. definition, evaluation, centrality claim) often deployed by Nigerian academics in the cross disciplinary fields of language arts and natural science to advance arguments in research articles. The study aimed at identifying how academic writers project knowledge claims in the research article. Three key objectives underlying this study were to identify elements used in staking claims, determine the patterns such elements follow and their communicative functions. The data for the study were 20 comparable research articles derived from two academic sub-corpora (10 academic writing humanities and 10 academic writing natural sciences) of the International Corpus of English Nigeria (ICE). Analysis of the data was done using AntMover software analyser. The study revealed, for instance, that the academics frequently used specific types of rhetorical devices that varied in their schemes more than some other types. The study has implications for academic writing and reader comprehensibility.","PeriodicalId":362245,"journal":{"name":"CLAREP Journal of English and Linguistics","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116840212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The growing interactions on these platforms have led to tremendous changes in the way English is written. The aim of this study is to investigate the changing forms of English spelling on e-messages on Facebook (FBK), Messenger (MSG) and WhatsApp (WHAP) chats by Cameroonians. The paper identifies and describes the different spellings for specific words or abbreviations and their frequencies in the corpora. The researchers explore the patterns of spelling that are atypical in English. Insights are drawn from Crystal (2006) and Thurlow (2006) who put forth views on language alterations in the context of the internet. Data for the study consists of a convenient sample of 300 e-messages from Facebook (50), Messenger (100) and WhatsApp (150). Findings show that many Cameroonians use innovative spellings on social media. They use a variety of casual and regional spellings that reflect their illocutionary force, intention and identity. It was established that globalisation and social media have intensified changes in English spelling, and it is a positive growth in the English language as a whole.","PeriodicalId":362245,"journal":{"name":"CLAREP Journal of English and Linguistics","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131975559","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The learning period is often characterized by real-life adversity, given that the learners are presented exclusively with material in English (Language B). Hence, this study explored challenges and coping strategies during the 2017 & 2018 academic years. Through Qualitative design, ten (10) students were subjected to semi-structured interviews, observation protocols, and focus-group discussions. Data were analysed in relation to challenges and coping strategies adopted. Vygotsky’s (1978,1986) Sociocultural Theory, Krashen’s (1994) Input Theory, and Seligman’s (2011) PERMA Model constitute the theoretical framework for the study. Findings revealed cognitive and sociocultural adversities and coping strategies for Proficiency. The study has implications for language immersion and Bilingual Education.","PeriodicalId":362245,"journal":{"name":"CLAREP Journal of English and Linguistics","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131074752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dissent as Thematic Tropes in Peter Abrahams’ Tell Freedom and Alan Paton’s Cry, the Beloved Country 彼得·亚伯拉罕的《告诉自由》和艾伦·佩顿的《呐喊,亲爱的国家》中不同意见的主题修辞

Through a close interrogation of the various socio-political indices that have impacted on the lives of the blacks in South African social space during the Apartheid regime, the paper evaluates Peter Abraham’s and Alan Paton’s resolve to stand for the dislocated black masses, taken a critical sentiment that runs counter to earliest traditions that derive their artistic bearing from western canons. Having looked at some of the historical and socio-political antecedents as well as the ideological moorings that birthed Apartheid literature, the paper attempts an evaluation of the writers’ resort to the praxis of dissent in their novels in a quest for justice and fair play in South African, and indeed, the African social space. Their adoption of the confrontational technique of dissent adumbrates the perspective under which we domiciled our critical discourse as well as assessed the writers’ desire for positive change in the society. In other words, since the writers’ mission is to interrogate issues that concern the masses, they ensure that their novels are accessible to the people. The essay deployed the indices of the sociological approach to literature in evaluating the salient themes of racial discrimination and resistance in the selected novels. This is done to foreground the inextricable relationship between literature and society. The paper concludes that, either explicitly or implicitly, the African writer uses his/her work to engage certain socio-political and cultural issues of his society as well as record them in a manner that the audience would want to react positively or negatively to the issues raised.","PeriodicalId":362245,"journal":{"name":"CLAREP Journal of English and Linguistics","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113976066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper examines the emblems of some major and minor Nigerian military and para-military organisations to establish their iconicity and semiotic correlations, identify and analyse their syntactic and lexico-semantic categories and relate them to their socio-cultural meanings. The paper adopts the qualitative method of analysis which involves a semiotic interpretation of the selected emblems and a linguistic analysis of the linguistic symbols in them. An identification survey of all the emblems (14), names and mottos (28) of (para-) military organisations in Nigeria was done. Seven (7) emblems and fourteen (14) names and mottos were later purposively sampled for this paper. Military personnel were also interviewed and the outcomes of the interview were augmented with library research: the use of the Internet and secondary sources. The study established that the emblems of Nigerian Para-military organisations are deliberately invested with semiotic and linguistic significances which Nigerians take for granted. The emblems convey the professional identities and essence of the various organisations and some socio-cultural and political legacies of the Nigerian semiosphere.","PeriodicalId":362245,"journal":{"name":"CLAREP Journal of English and Linguistics","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126342649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper contributes to the linguistic study of her works from the pragmatic angle with the adoption of Sperber and Wilson’s Relevance Theory. The aim is simply to explore the role of reference assignment in character identification or indexing in conversation within the text So Long a Letter. The research reveals that the different models of reference serve to aid character presentation toward the achievement of cohesive effects in the advancement of the plot of the novella. The paper shows that a study of reference assignment in the novella of Mariama Ba facilitates good access to a kind of reference and cohesive bond which aids the recovery of meaning in the text.","PeriodicalId":362245,"journal":{"name":"CLAREP Journal of English and Linguistics","volume":"6 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126089087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in the Nigerian situation, a sustained undertone of anger, protestation and ethno-political activism remains pronounced in the contemporary context of environmental literature. After the brutal execution of the prominent Ogoni-born ethnic nationality rights activist, environmentalist and writer, Ken Saro-Wiwa, by the Sani Abacha military dictatorship in 1995, Nnimmo Bassey’s environmental watch persists and vehemently echoes in his poetry. His voice has come to serve as a veritable instrument that re-echoes the passionate outcry and activism of Ken Saro-Wiwa. This poetic voice thus reverberates most vociferously in the Nigerian literary firmament and in global environmental action project. This paper, therefore, examines the social import of the convergence of artistic endowment and ecological consciousness in Bassey’s poetry, using ecological postcolonialism as analytical tool. Thus, the conclusion of this work is that artistic talent could be harnessed to advance the cause of socio-political re-engineering of society.","PeriodicalId":362245,"journal":{"name":"CLAREP Journal of English and Linguistics","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121929941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The data is drawn from the Nigerian component of the International Corpus of English (ICE), while the British component of ICE is used as the reference corpus. The results of the study show that Nigerian users of English use the prepositional dative pattern more often than British English users. Also, while there is evidence that Nigerian users of English sometimes omit to-infinitive in words that generally have it in native English varieties, this feature is not radically marked in Nigerian English, as claimed in earlier non-corpus-based studies.","PeriodicalId":362245,"journal":{"name":"CLAREP Journal of English and Linguistics","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122276129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
