New information on Colombian scale insect diversity is presented based on the morphological examination of slide-mounted specimens preserved in museums and newly collected material during field collecting surveys in the Atlantic and Pacific coasts (including Valle del Cauca) of Colombia. Specimens were prepared for microscopy and identified using a morphological approach. Eight species are recorded for the first time in Colombia: Phalacrococcus howertoni Hodges & Hodgson, 2010 (Coccidae); Aspidiella hartii (Cockerell, 1895), Diaspis bromeliae (Kerner, 1778), Lepidosaphes tokionis (Kuwana, 1902), Pseudoparlatoria chiapensis Wolff, 2001 (Diaspididae); Comstockiella sabalis (Comstock, 1883) (Halimococcidae); Lecanodiaspis prosopidis (Maskell, 1895) (Lecanodiaspididae) and Phenacoccus tucumanus Granara de Willink, 1983 (Pseudococcidae). Taxonomic keys for scale species known from Colombia are provided for those genera which are newly recorded for the country. Additionally, new host records were found for 35 species previously recorded for Colombia: Pseudococcidae (11 spp.), Coccidae (11 spp.), Diaspididae (7 spp.), Aclerdidae (1 sp.), Eriococcidae (1 sp.), Monophlebidae (1 sp.), Ortheziidae (1 sp.), Putoidae (1 sp.) and Rhizoecidae (1 sp.).","PeriodicalId":36221,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Insect Biodiversity","volume":"28 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2022-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87336529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Six new species are proposed:  Oncocephala susanstainesae Calcetas, Staines & Adorada sp. nov. from Namibia, Oncocephala deleoni Calcetas, Staines and Adorada sp. nov. from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Oncocephala camachoi Calcetas, Staines & Adorada sp. nov. from Cameroon, Oncocephala eborai Calcetas, Staines & Adorada sp. nov. from Equatorial Guinea, Oncocephala dimaculanganae Calcetas, Staines & Adorada sp. nov. from Cameroon and Oncocephala demesai Calcetas, Staines and Adorada sp. nov. from Togo. Oncocephala methneri Uhmann, 1928 and O. madoni Pic, 1941 are treated as incerte sedis. The genus Oncocephala in Africa is divided into seven species groups (Gestroi, Perrieri, Insignis, Senegalensis, Promentorii, Cuneata and Angusticollis) based on the similarity of their elytral characters. Female genitalia are described for the first time. Glaucium grandiflorum Boiss. & A. Huett and Glaucium corniculatum (L.) Rudolph (Papaveraceae) are reported as the host plants in Turkey. The adults emerge from the soil in very early spring, locate the host plant, feed on young leaves and buds, mate on the host plant, and females deposit eggs inside the seed capsules. The larvae feed with seeds, mature larvae leave capsules entering soil to pupate, and adults of the new generation hibernate in the soil at the root base of the host plant. This species is univoltine and produced one generation annually in eastern Turkey. Acentrus histrio is newly recorded for Azerbaijan, and A. boroveci Košťál, 2014, for Tajikistan.","PeriodicalId":36221,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Insect Biodiversity","volume":"33 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2021-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81065389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
