NCR's asset recovery program for ATMs includes the following options: (1) recovery of usable components for service operations; (2) refurbishment of used units for re-sale in a secondary market; and (3) recovery of raw materials from product disposal. This paper describes a case study of refurbishment and re-sale of used ATMs. NCR's Financial Solutions Group is increasing the life expectancy of ATMs through a program of refurbishment. Units reaching \"end of life\" with a major European bank have been traded in as part of an upgrade program. These units have been returned to \"as new\" condition and placed in secondary markets. This paper addresses the issues identified in developing such a program and demonstrates both the economic and environmental advantages to be gained. It is shown that these advantages accrue to both supplier and customer and reduce the landfill and resource depletion burden.","PeriodicalId":360946,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (Cat. Furthermore, this paper illustrates the use of these end-of-life costs to estimate the economic benefits of design for environment (DFE). At Hewlett-Packard, the end-of-life costs were estimated for a particular product line. Using this information, the economic benefits from DFE were also estimated. This information assisted the product line management in justifying expenditures on DFE. This paper describes the methodology used to estimate the end-of-life costs, as well as the role of an end-of-life cost estimate in a DFE investment analysis.","PeriodicalId":360946,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (Cat. For the first time, it is now possible to evaluate the DFE attributes of machines based upon actual product end-of-life (EOL) data. Using demanufacturing information gathered at IBM Endicott ARC, this paper couples some of the key actions (cause) initiated by the ECECP and results (effect) as measured by the ARC on returned products. The results of these studies clearly demonstrate IBM's success in implementing targeted DFE attributes defined within its Environmentally Conscious Products (ECP) program. This paper presents results obtained from a project where DFE and dismantling performance were evaluated on a wide range of product types varying in age from one to fifteen years old. It analyzes the data and links the findings to DFE initiatives taken within the ECP program or other contributing factors having an impact on product recyclability.","PeriodicalId":360946,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (Cat. This preference comes from a strong business case when DFE is implemented and environmental problems are solved or eliminated with minimal or no recurring costs. The rapid acceptance of DFE has resulted in numerous changes internal to a company's focus, planning, organization, processes, and personnel. Demand for DFE has not only been fuelled by the cost savings potential but has been rapidly endorsed by customers and the regulatory agencies. The most significant paradigm shift has been engineering accepting DFE as a performance specification, as well as the responsibility that hazardous materials and product/process wastes are design defects. This change has prompted integration of DFE into the design process with associated tools and metrics and comprises the next generation of design for the environment.","PeriodicalId":360946,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (Cat. The study gathered both cost and revenue data from five collection programs in order to calculate the net cost of operating the program. The objective was to determine if there are similarities in the economics of different collection models. While no trends in net cost for collection were determined, insight into the barriers and advantages of different collection models was gained.","PeriodicalId":360946,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (Cat. Environmental objectives include disassemblability, recyclability, material selection and serviceability. Some of them are qualitative in nature, leading to large uncertainties of measurement and comparison. Thus it is necessary to develop a generic methodology for quantitative measurement on specific environmental aspects as well as on overall environmental performance. The proposed methodology is based on fuzzy theory, graph theory, and analytic hierarchy process (AHP) theory.","PeriodicalId":360946,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (Cat. The next step in ecodesign: service-oriented life cycle design 生态设计的下一步:面向服务的生命周期设计

{"title":"The next step in ecodesign: service-oriented life cycle design","authors":"T. Bhamra, S. One way to tackle this is to examine the hierarchy given by Stevels which illustrates that these improvements have to be made on four levels with each level increasing both environmental benefit and degree of innovation required in the design process. Ecodesign initially started by examining ways to clean up manufacturing processes to prevent both waste and pollution. Research and practice has moved towards the redesign of products that consider environmental requirements in the design process. The next stage of the hierarchy considers the benefits and mechanisms of replacing products with services. This paper presents collaborative industrial research that is exploring: whether using a service-oriented view increases the designer's ability to design products with a reduced environmental impact, how this change affects designers, and what this means for tools and techniques to support designers and design teams taking such an approach. The paper illustrates ways in which industry and designers can take a service-oriented view and the potential environmental improvements and benefits that can result.","PeriodicalId":360946,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (Cat.
