Recently schools have started integrating recent technology into the educational process in order to attract students and increase their engagement in the process. This paper will demonstrate how an augmented immersive reality mobile application can work to enrich the learning environment and attract the students to learn and explore subjects such as sciences, more specifically Chemistry. Augmented immersive reality allows students to learn in their own way and pace while encouraging them to explore and be creative as their `trial-and-error' mistakes will not impose any major consequences in the virtual world. A field study was conducted on grade 11 students to verify the benefits of using the developed application in education.","PeriodicalId":360311,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116318562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The equipment enables the full configurability of the node's parameters and the network structure (topology and link impedances). An 8 nodes portable version is realized as a demonstrator, however the corresponding laboratory experiment is designed to be easily scalable to a high number of nodes. The network's control and the data acquisition are automated thanks to a USB interface board and a LabVIEW control interface. The experiment allows the student to perform some direct real time analysis of a set of networked (coupled) Chua's circuits, with the goal to give immediate impact to the discovery of collective behaviors. In particular, the proposed experiences range from the characterization of the complex dynamics of the isolated nodes to the complete synchronization, as well as the emergence of clustering and waves. It is adopted within some course on Advanced Circuit Theory at the Master Degree level.","PeriodicalId":360311,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114800904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since this earlier approach was very successful the system should be improved to increase the learning experience for students during programming exercises. The problem of the current system is that only a static image was shown on the LED matrix controlled by students' array programming over the embedded system. The idea of this paper is to change this static behavior into a dynamic display of information on the LED matrix by the use of sensors which are connected with the embedded system. For this approach a light sensor and a temperature sensor are connected to an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) port of the embedded system. These sensors' values can be read by the students to compute the correct output for the LED matrix. The result is captured and sent back to the students for direct feedback. Furthermore, unit tests can be used to automatically evaluate the programming results. The system was evaluated during a MOOC course about Web Technologies using JavaScript. Evaluation results are taken from the student's feedback and an evaluation of the students' code executions on the system. The positive feedback and the evaluation of the students' executions, which shows a higher amount of code executions compared to standard programming tasks and the fact that students solving these tasks have overall better course results, highlight the advantage of the approach. Due to the evaluation results, this approach should be used in e-learning e.g. MOOCs teaching programming languages to increase the learning experience and motivate students to learn programming.","PeriodicalId":360311,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130936224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It encompasses the core teaching skills and research in a field or industry [13]. One of the main concerns of the software industry is to develop the talent of its human resources since the quality and innovation of its products and services depend of a great extent on the Knowledge, the ability, and the talent of technical engineers. In the educational area the used of BOK and Cloud Computing Tools are becoming the best way to provide solutions that meet the current need for greater collaboration between business, industry, education, and society; for this reason, the development of software products based in innovation is important for the professional life of a software engineering, since it leads to transform routine tasks into automated tasks; in the same way, it allows to manage processes focused on aligning services of Information Technology (IT) to the needs of companies with an emphasis on the benefits that the final customer added may perceive to the factor of I+D+I in order to create an innovative product. The current study focuses on the use of computer tools in the cloud in its phases: definition, planning, and control of software project based on the innovation as a tool for development and knowledge generation based in BOK. The tools of Computing in the Cloud analyzed were: Alfresco, Redbooth, DotProject, Dealines, and Redmine. The use of these tools permitted to obtain information to formulate a BOK in the context of projects.","PeriodicalId":360311,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131129054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Compared to many other areas predominantly involving closed-form solutions, design is an open-ended activity, with many possible solutions for the same problem. This shift from the concrete to the abstract makes teaching of engineering design courses more challenging. The target set forth by good academic institutions is to have a system in place that can produce graduates who are well equipped and suitably qualified to practice professional engineering in a continually changing and increasingly complex global environment. Bloom's taxonomy outlines the skill levels required for education at any level, and in any discipline. Accreditation agencies such as ABET also establish criteria that can be generally applied to any type of education, but are primarily focused on engineering education. The current paper describes a methodology for Product Design education, integrating both Bloom's taxonomy and ABET student outcomes in an activity-based environment. Creative Design course taught at the Mechanical Engineering Department at Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat is presented as a case study. Example design activities are described for each of the six levels in Bloom's taxonomy. A mapping table is also presented to relate these levels to student outcomes of ABET criterion.","PeriodicalId":360311,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133145628","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Starting from assumptions based on cognitive load theory we present the design of an online gamification-based training system to be used in software engineering contexts. Students can voluntarily solve challenges for which they may earn credits. These small problems serve as assessments; the approach follows the assessment for learning paradigm in that assessments provide formative feedback to enhance the learning experience. The combination of formative assessment and gamification is new to software engineering education. We describe system design as well as the different types of challenges in detail. We also provide several examples for actual challenges used in an object-oriented programming introduction using Java.","PeriodicalId":360311,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131286913","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
