The problem is formulated as the maximization of the network global energy efficiency, defined as the ratio between the network sum-rate and the total consumed power, and is tackled by a novel approach which merges tools from learning, non-cooperative game theory, and fractional programming theory. The proposed algorithm is provably convergent, enjoys near-optimal performance, while requiring a much lower complexity than previous alternatives.","PeriodicalId":360054,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133516896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It estimates the user perceived quality, in a Mean Opinion Score (MOS) scale, by evaluating several Radio Frequency (RF) channel measurements and Quality of Service (QoS) metrics. Real Drive Test (DT) data and MOS measurements were used as reference data, in order to produce a new QoE prediction model, using machine learning techniques. The Support Vector Regression (SVR) algorithm was used to map the QoS metrics into MOS. The new developed model enables the application of QoE as a more realistic network optimization criteria. The QoE model for voice calls presented a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 11% and a correlation of 62%, when comparing the predicted MOS to the one that was measured. The web browsing model showed an higher correlation (of 92%) and a lower RMSE (of 10%).","PeriodicalId":360054,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132634939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose CFMTC (Cascade Forest for Mobile Traces Classification), a mobile network trace-based traffic classification system, which exploits flow statistical features extracted from mobile traces. Compared to other classification approaches, our system is based upon the key insight that deep learning techniques and the statistical features of bidirectional flows of mobile traces can be combined together for accurate mobile application classification. In CFMTC, we first filter UDP and TCP flows from mobile traces according to the flow attributes (Source IP, Destination IP, Source port, Destination port, Protocol), and then train Cascade Forest to classify raw mobile traces. We use a feature selection method to find the optimal feature set and determine the influence of different features. Our approach involves the following key features: 1) suitable for mobile traces classification; 2) adapted Cascade Forest algorithm for mobile traffic classification; 3) applicable to both connection-oriented protocols and connection-less protocols; 4) effective for both encrypted and non-encrypted flows. We implement CFMTC and conduct extensive evaluations on mobile network traces containing text, audio and video flows generated by Kuwo Music, WeChat, PPTV Live traces. Our experimental results show that CFMTC has the ability to accurately classify the mobile traces of the target mobile applications with an average accuracy of about 88.71%. Our experimental results prove that CFMTC is a robust system, and meanwhile displays competitive performance in practice.","PeriodicalId":360054,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115370745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A long-term evolution (LTE)-based channel sounding system is used to measure the propagation characteristics in a dedicated HSR LTE network with the echo channel effect (ECE) caused by the same signaling from different remote radio units (RRUs). The measurement data in a rural scenario are partitioned into the cases without and with the ECE. Based on the processed data, root mean square (RMS) delay spread, Doppler spread, and angular spread are analyzed and modeled. In addition, the nonstationarity of the HSR channel is studied focusing on the stationarity interval. The presented results will be useful in non-stationary time-frequency-space channel modeling for narrow-strip-shaped HSR communication networks.","PeriodicalId":360054,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124359433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We analyze the wastage of transmission power for different types of placement of the APs with touching and intersecting circles for the full coverage of the rectangular region. We show that the minimum wastages in the inner bulk region with touching and intersecting circles are 81.4% and 20.77%, respectively. We then propose a systematic scheme to place the intersecting circles and show that for moderate size of the rectangle, the wastage due to the spill over of the circles at the boundary can be much higher that 20.77%, but when the side(s) of the rectangle is(are) very large compared to the radius r of the circles, the wastage asymptotically tends to around 20.86%. Also, we show that use of a few circles of smaller radius r' = 0.62r would significantly reduce the wastage even for a rectangle of small size and that would not require any additional bandwidth compared to the scheme for using all circles of the same radius r. The proposed placement scheme is very simple, elegant and effective in minimizing wastage of transmission power of APs as well as optimizing the bandwidth requirement through reuse of channels avoiding co-channel and adjacent channel interferences.","PeriodicalId":360054,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC)","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114573695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existing works concentrate only on the allocation of transmission resources (i.e., antenna time blocks) in time windows and may result in transmission conflicts hard to efficiently resolve, especially when multiple missions are activated simultaneously. To this end, we propose to further integrate computation with transmission resource allocation, to enable data compression so as to alleviate conflicts. Specifically, aiming to maximize the number of completed missions and minimize data loss, we first formulate the joint transmission and computation resource allocation problem as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) one. Then, for the complexity reduction, we transform the MILP into an integer linear programming (ILP) one by fixing maximal data compression. Meanwhile, by constructing a conflict graph to characterize resource allocation conflicts, a time window scheduling algorithm is proposed to solve the ILP problem efficiently. Next, we further develop a data compression control algorithm to reduce data loss on the prerequisite of invariant mission number. Finally, simulation results show that the space network can benefit from the combination of transmission and computation resources in terms of both mission number and data loss.","PeriodicalId":360054,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115014436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Beamforming is generally perceived as the most convenient solution to overcome this issue, usually relying on a combination of beam scanning and reciprocity-based precoding. However, channel reciprocity cannot be assumed in FDD spectrum bands, hence forcing initial access to rely solely on beam scanning with the subsequent impact on initial access time. This paper presents an initial access scheme applicable to FDD bands, where second-order channel statistics are exploited through digital beamforming. Link-level and Monte Carlo simulations are performed using the QuaDRiGa channel model, showing good results of the initial access time even in very low signal to noise ratio conditions.","PeriodicalId":360054,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123441450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wake-up radio, a new technology being developed by IEEE, describes a broad solution to this challenge. In this paper, we address the issue of optimal sensor nodes selection to maximize the energy-efficiency of a WSN for IoT applications. A wake-up protocol is then applied on the optimally selected-sensor nodes. The node selection is formulated as an optimization problem with spatio-temporal correlation constraints thus minimizing redundant data transfer. Subsequently, a MLE method is used to solve the problem. Additional novelty of this work is the development of a wake-up protocol over hexagonal grids when a mobile sink is used for data aggregation leading to improved energy-efficiency. The impact of the proposed method on decision errors in IoT applications is also discussed. Extensive experiments are performed to analyse the energy-efficiency, estimation error, modelling accuracy, network lifetime of WSN in the context of IoT applications. Results indicate an improvement in energy-efficiency when compared to conventional methods.","PeriodicalId":360054,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123662391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work investigated an often-neglected problem — data wastage where downloaded video data were not played back due to user early departure. Empirical measurements showed that data wastage is significant, e.g., around 20% of data downloaded were in fact wasted. Moreover, substantial data wastage exists not only in current commercial streaming platforms, but also in advanced adaptive streaming algorithms proposed in the literature. This work developed a new Post-Streaming Wastage Analysis (PSWA) framework to tackle the problem by converting existing adaptive streaming algorithms into wastage-aware. PSWA enables the service provider to control the tradeoff between data wastage and streaming quality-of-experience (QoE). Most remarkably, PSWA can achieve significant data wastage reduction (e.g., over 70%) even without negatively impacting QoE. PSWA can be applied to existing or future adaptive streaming algorithms and thus offers a practical solution to data wastage in current and future streaming services.","PeriodicalId":360054,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123989798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The studies are based on simulations with 3GPP-specified radio channel models including path loss, shadowing and fast fading effects. The considered positioning approach exploits measurement of Time-Of-Arrival (TOA) and Angle-Of-Departure (AOD), which are estimated from beamformed NR synchronization signals. Based on the given measurements and the assumed train movement model, the train position is tracked by using an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), which is able to handle the non-linear relationship between the TOA and AOD measurements, and the estimated train position parameters. It is shown that in the considered scenario the TOA measurements are able to achieve better accuracy compared to the AOD measurements. However, as shown by the results, the best tracking performance is achieved, when both of the measurements are considered. In this case, a very high, sub-meter, tracking accuracy can be achieved for most (>75%) of the tracking time, thus achieving the positioning accuracy requirements envisioned for the 5G NR. The pursued high-accuracy and high-availability positioning technology is considered to be in a key role in several envisioned HST use cases, such as mission-critical autonomous train systems.","PeriodicalId":360054,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC)","volume":"439 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125762904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
