These sensors use limited power sources, such as batteries, making energy a key resource that needs management. One of the main contributors to energy consumption in WSN nodes is data transmission through a radio device, and the parameter that most influences energy consumption in radio devices is the transmission power. In this work, we explore the Ant-Colony Optimization (ACO) mechanism of the Ant-based Dynamic Hop Optimization Protocol (ADHOP) routing algorithm to minimize transmission power of the links in a route without compromising connectivity. The proposed mechanism is evaluated through simulation using the OMNeT++ simulator with the INETMANET framework for mobile IEEE 802.15.4 networks. The results confirm the initial assumption that it is possible to lower energy consumption with little impact on data delivery rate.","PeriodicalId":359419,"journal":{"name":"2013 III Brazilian Symposium on Computing Systems Engineering","volume":"190 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132523409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, most of the time such models are not directly reused for the design of the software architecture of the target embedded system. The present paper aims to fulfill this gap by introducing a novel mechanism called Assisted Transformation of models (AST) to transform typical functional (simulation) models designed in the Simulink environment into architectural models represented in the Architecture Analysis & Design Language (AADL). The use and benefits of the proposed mechanism are exemplified in the paper by means of a case study devoted for the design of an autonomous parking system.","PeriodicalId":359419,"journal":{"name":"2013 III Brazilian Symposium on Computing Systems Engineering","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132593020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the challenges for IaaS customers is the correct provisioning of their resources. Many users end up under provisioning, hurting application performance, or over provisioning, paying for resources that are not really necessary. Memory is an essential resource for any computing system, and is frequently a performance-limiting factor in cloud environments. Our work uses monitoring to enable a cloud customer to determine if the memory allocated to his virtual machines is correctly provisioned, under provisioned, or over provisioned. Experimental results with the Xen platform demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":359419,"journal":{"name":"2013 III Brazilian Symposium on Computing Systems Engineering","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128048237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These systems must consider not only schedulability constraints to ensure temporal correctness but also their energy limitations to accomplish their considered mission. Moreover, it is still desired that the system provides services with the best possible quality. This work presents a problem of selecting the frequency for each task to fulfill the system goal, while considering issues of schedulability and energy consumption. The problem is formulated in mathematical programming and solved with a convex-optimization algorithm. It is assumed that CPU frequency can be selected continuously within a given range. The system reconfiguration scheme assumes the earliest deadline first (EDF) policy, with soft and hard real-time tasks managed by some bandwidth reservation scheme. The effectiveness of the proposed solution is shown through numerical analysis.","PeriodicalId":359419,"journal":{"name":"2013 III Brazilian Symposium on Computing Systems Engineering","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116862413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Coupled with information technologies, high automation levels are achieved. Such automation is seen in the use of AGVs for material handling. An important problem in AGV fleets is deciding what task should be assigned to each AGV. To tackle this problem, a multi-agent AGV system is proposed, which has three agents: an AGV agent, a Loading Point (LP) agent and a Storage Point (SP) agent. The AGV agent uses a Fuzzy system to decide what task it should take, and dispatch the AGV to the location of the task, using the A-star (A*) algorithm to find the shortest path to the task. The LP agent keeps a list of all available tasks in its corresponding loading point, such as a loading dock, and handles task requests from AGV agents. The SP agent manages a particular storage space, such as a rack section, and handles AGV requests for payloads stored in the rack or requests for free space. To validate the system, a warehouse operation was simulated and evaluated measuring the average task wait time, time to complete tasks and average jam time. Two other decision methods were used, First Come First Served (FCFS) and Contract Network (CNET), to compare with the Fuzzy method. Results show that the Fuzzy method enabled a greater average task wait time reduction than the other two decision methods, and also completed tasks in less time.","PeriodicalId":359419,"journal":{"name":"2013 III Brazilian Symposium on Computing Systems Engineering","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122749348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditional reference methods for doing these are expensive and require sophisticated equipment. Flow-Batch (FB) and Flow Injection Analysis (FIA) methodologies have been contributing to perform quality control in industrial processes. Biodiesel, fuel produced from vegetable oil or animal fats, should be tested to guarantee that the free glycerol level present in it is not beyond the standard. In this paper, an embedded system that combines FB and FIA methodologies is proposed for the pretreatment of the sample and the determination of glycerol level in biodiesel samples. The system proposed cost less than two hundred dollars, is portable and provides the necessary precision. The system was tested with samples obtained from Petrobras Oil company in Bahia Blanca (Argentina) without previous treatment and was validated using a recovery analysis. Results obtained are between 98% and 102%.","PeriodicalId":359419,"journal":{"name":"2013 III Brazilian Symposium on Computing Systems Engineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128581713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such approach is normally adopted in situations where the WCET of a given task is either unknown or highly pessimistic in comparison with the average execution time. Thereby, AAs provide certain flexibility for stringent real-time applications. In this paper we present the use of AA in a project aimed at designing a small scale Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). More specifically, the implementation of a subsystem of the UAV as AA is described to proof of concept. By analyzing the results obtained, which are optimistic, it provides the direction to develop the complete control strategy as AA. A preliminary structure of the overall control system under AA is also presented in the paper.","PeriodicalId":359419,"journal":{"name":"2013 III Brazilian Symposium on Computing Systems Engineering","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125927653","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, this article presents an evaluation of different isolated words recognition techniques on an embedded system using in the microcontroller dsPIC30F4013. So, the feature extraction phase is based on an adaptation of the Mel-frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) and the automatic recognition phase is based on the following techniques: Dynamic Time Warping (DTW), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Related to the experiments setup, voice commands were evaluated in 3 different scenarios and the best accuracy rate was reached by a combination of PCA and ANN. It is also important to note that this implementation was carried out with the capacity constraints of the mentioned circuit.","PeriodicalId":359419,"journal":{"name":"2013 III Brazilian Symposium on Computing Systems Engineering","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127711092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The C-space defines the space of execution times for which a system is feasible, which can help system designers to more easily check if a task set is feasible on a set of candidate platforms. This paper extends previous works generalizing the description of the C-space for Earliest Deadline First scheduling to systems with initial task offsets. The feasibility gain offered by offsets is then expressed as the volume ratio between the C-space of an asynchronous system and its corresponding synchronous system when offsets are randomly chosen. The problem requires solving multiple similar instances of the Chinese Remainder Problem, for which an efficient algorithm in this context is provided. We show that even for random offsets, the gain can reach 15%.","PeriodicalId":359419,"journal":{"name":"2013 III Brazilian Symposium on Computing Systems Engineering","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134044147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In industrial sites the radio signal propagation is subject to blockage due to highly dense metallic structures. Network planning should therefore account for the number and the density of the 3D obstructions surrounding each link. In this paper we address the problem of wireless node deployment in wireless industrial networks, with special focus on WirelessHART IEC 62591 and ISA IEC 62734 standards. The goal is to optimize the network connectivity and provide practical deployment rules in complex industrial sites characterized by severe obstructions. The proposed node deployment approach is validated through a case study in an oil refinery environment. It includes an ad-hoc simulation environment that implements the proposed network planning approach using 2D models of the plant, providing connectivity information based on user-defined deployment configurations. Obtained results were validated by on-site measurements.","PeriodicalId":359419,"journal":{"name":"2013 III Brazilian Symposium on Computing Systems Engineering","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115664611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
