The proposed design uses TRIACs to switch the capacitor banks in order to correct the power factor of inductive loads. TRIACs are more effective than electro-mechanical relays and hit the high-performance benchmarks. The switching of TRIACs is controlled by an Arduino board. The Arduino is programmed to non-stop monitor and calculate the power factor of the connecting load by sensing the signal from CT, PT and Zero Cross Detectors (ZCDs), and keep the power factor of the load above the reference value (0.9) by appropriately energizing the capacitors in parallel to the connecting load through TRIAC switching. The values of power factor along with the current before and after improvement is displayed on LCD. The hardware prototype of the proposed APFC design is also developed to validate its operation. The satisfactory and acceptable results of the APFC system testing have confirmed that the suggested design yields a reliable output and can be further used in any single phase practical application to ensure the power factor close to unity.","PeriodicalId":359290,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on Energy Conservation and Efficiency (ICECE)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125399721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Punjab is the major consumer of electricity which consumes more than 60 % of electricity produced. Energy conservation is one of the step towards decreasing the demand supply gap. Punjab Energy Efficiency and Conservation Agency (PEECA) conducted energy audits of public sector institutes in order to find the conservation potential which leads towards the retrofitting of conventional electrical appliances with efficient ones for relieving the burden on national grid. PEECA had chosen Government College University Lahore as a pilot project and retrofitted efficient electrical appliances by finding energy conservation potential. In this paper, energy conservation targets are highlighted which were achieved after the retrofitting of efficient electrical appliances in GCU Lahore. Moreover, it has also been demonstrated that if efficient electrical appliances would be retrofitted in other public institutes of Punjab, then huge amount of energy can be saved.","PeriodicalId":359290,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on Energy Conservation and Efficiency (ICECE)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122128796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Solar thermal power plants are now replacing conventional power plants for the power production. There is a dire need to design new technologies for clean power generation. In this paper solar tower structure is designed for a 50MW solar thermal power plant. A review of different types of towers used in solar thermal power plant is included at the start. Design process of tower structure is started by designing a tower structure based on the height requirement obtained from ray trace analysis. Then three variants of this structure are designed using angles of different cross section. All variants are analyzed using CAE software and deformation is calculated. Plots of deformation, bending moments and shear force are included. A comparison of all these structures is carried out and the structure which shows minimum deformation is finalized.","PeriodicalId":359290,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on Energy Conservation and Efficiency (ICECE)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128727362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed battery charger circuit worked in islanded mode, comprises of two-stage conversion i.e., AC-DC and DC-DC conversion. Neutral-point clamped converter is used for bidirectional AC-DC conversion while for DC-DC conversion High-frequency leg along with high- frequency Centered Tap Transformer followed by Half bridge is used. The proposed battery charger can convert three phase utility power to charge the vehicle batteries by providing 48V and 20.83A. Smart city infrastructure incorporating the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm offers substantial advantages in terms of real-time waste monitoring capability. Basic sensory monitoring by itself, however, falls short of achieving optimal waste management without comprehensive data analytics. To this end, the present work proposes an off-the-shelf IoT-based waste monitoring solution, combined with back-end data analytics for efficient waste collection. The work employs Raspberry Pi and ultrasonic sensors, mounted on waste-bins in a specific area of a cooperating municipality for waste capacity monitoring. Realtime bin status and machine learning analytics are used to identify present as well as predict future waste collection scheduling. Dynamic collection servicing routes are accordingly mapped for utilization by waste collection vehicles. During a tenday trial and validation period, it was observed that the proposed design increases fuel efficiency by up to 46% and a reduction in collection times by up to 18%. In addition to the noted quantitative improvements, the proposed scheme can also aid in optimizing long-term waste policies in smart city environments using the recorded statistics.","PeriodicalId":359290,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on Energy Conservation and Efficiency (ICECE)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125353679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
