One of those areas has been sustainability studies in general, through to energy studies from a social science perspective more specifically. In this paper, we explore how Max-Neef’s work has been used to describe energy, more specifically energy services, as need satisfiers. Moreover, we also describe how the study of energy services as need satisfiers has been undertaken in practice, with urban and rural communities in Colombia, Zambia and Nepal. Our empirical work is based on Max-Neef’s workshops, albeit with some adaptations. We have named the adapted approach human scale energy services (HuSES). Ogbeide-Osaretin, Chigozie Nelson Nkalu","doi":"10.1504/IJSD.2021.115232","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1504/IJSD.2021.115232","url":null,"abstract":"This research's primary purpose was to examine the poverty-growth-inequality linkage to ascertain the existence and direction of causality using data from lower and lower-middle-income countries in Africa. The result shows that while inequality is positively related to poverty, the effect of growth is negative. The short-run analysis also shows that growth had an insignificant negative relationship with poverty, while inequality had a significant positive relationship. The result also shows a long-run causality in growth and inequality given the significance of the error term while there is no long-run causality in poverty. The result shows that while growth is widening inequality, the inequality gaps created also help increase growth. The following four empirical models were developed based on the results of the analysis: 1) fostering the capabilities of local fishermen; 2) the establishment of a cooperation mechanism; 3) the empowerment of local conservation activists; 4) planning for the use and transformation of fishing villages into sites for ecotourism. The environmental actions adopted for the said area are currently still being effectively implemented. It has been determined through empirical interviews that the main reason for the success of the area lies in the fact that no economic incentives are provided to mobilise the villagers, which in turn, guarantees that the willingness to engage in environmental actions is not affected by economic changes.
