Distinct gaps between agricultural policy priorities and the data infrastructure needed to develop metrics for policy evaluation at farm level exist, particularly regarding the social dimension of sustainability. This paper aims to examine the current social sustainability frameworks in operation across Europe and beyond, with a view towards expansion using Irish Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) data from the Teagasc National Farm Survey. A stakeholder consultation process, featuring policymakers, farm data recorders, academic researchers amongst others, highlighted pertinent concerns regarding the social sustainability of agriculture. Issues such as farmer stress, work/life balance, generational renewal and the viability of rural areas featured as priority concerns. Issues such as these have been identified as key areas of concern within the new common agricultural policy which supports the continued development of specific indicators of social sustainability.","PeriodicalId":35908,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Development","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66719802","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The artificial neural network (ANN) model is applied to predict three variables during 2014-2025. Our empirical results show that there is bidirectional causality between economic growth and CO2 emissions, as well as energy consumption and economic growth, and there is unidirectional causal relationship running from energy consumption to CO2 emissions. In order to reduce emissions and to avoid a negative effect on the economic growth, low-income countries should adopt the dual strategy of increasing investment in energy infrastructure and stepping up energy conservation policies to increase energy efficiency and reduce wastage of energy. Comparison with dynamic simultaneous-equation model shows that the ANN model performs better for predictions.","PeriodicalId":35908,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Development","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46184748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, consumers still struggle to incorporate sustainability labels into purchasing decisions. Therefore, we focus on investigating the relationship between sustainable behaviour and the level of knowledge and understanding consumers have about different types of labels and claims. We visited 408 households in different Brazilian regions. Participants were able to manually inspect four products and point out the sustainability labels they found on packaging and their meanings. Factor analysis followed by a two-stage cluster analysis identified the existence of three clusters. Consumers have little knowledge and understanding of labels, but more sustainable consumers have a higher level of knowledge and understanding. Their main mistakes were the misunderstanding of labels' meaning and confusion between claims and sustainability labels. Implications for policymakers and companies are presented.","PeriodicalId":35908,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Development","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46190429","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first case regards the diffusion of the public controversy regarding the Xylella bacteria affecting olive trees in South Italy (Salento, Puglia). The second relates the work of the National Great Risks Commission (GRC), under the National Service of the Italian Civil Protection, before, during and after the earthquake at L'Aquila, in 2009, and the reasons of the judicial dispute at L'Aquila Court, in which this technoscientific committee has been involved, and of the conviction against several expert members of these organisms. Exploring these cases can make visible the complexity and critical aspects of pursuing an approach of definition-categorisation of 'research misconduct' and the involvement of local communities within the dynamics of technoscientific knowledge reproduction and assessment.","PeriodicalId":35908,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Development","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66719617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
