Nevertheless, almost a third of single parents in Germany who need childcare for their children under the age of three are unable to find it. Although around 70 % of day care providers claim to take the single-parent criterion into account when allocating slots, the prevailing allocation procedures cannot guarantee that this is implemented. This article shows how transparent allocation criteria can be designed nationwide and how their implementation can be realised through suitable, centralised, municipal allocation systems. In particular, negative emission technologies like direct air capture promise to play a key long-term role on the path towards a climate-neutral Europe. However, timely capacity building requires an early technology uptake, which is currently impeded by various market obstacles, including learning externalities, coordination failure and the lack of a stable revenue perspective. Under these conditions, clear priorities and support measures are needed to create a genuine internal market for CO2. It highlights the dependency on imports, leading to reliance on resource-rich countries. The paper discusses the risks of this dependency, including supply disruptions from exogenous shocks. Based on a new dataset on major conflicts since 1870, the findings show that wars cause a substantial decline in GDP and spike in inflation within war zones. Interestingly, countries geographically close to war zones experience significant economic disruptions, even when neutral to the conflict, whereas countries far from the conflict may see minimal to slightly positive spillovers.
