Value Management is a systematic and innovative methodology with multi-disciplinary approach targeted to achieve better value of construction products. However, VM is criticized for the fact that it focused solely on value for money, lack of creativity and fails to include the concept of risk management at the early project stage. Therefore, this paper intents to propose a new conceptual framework of Integrated Value Management (IVM) concept as an alternative to VM framework for construction projects in Malaysia. IVM is a combination of three (3) key components namely: Value Engineering (VE), Risk Management (RM) and Partnering to be incorporated in the development of construction projects. The study is purely based on literature review. It reviews the involvement of partnering in a project environment; value engineering approaches to ensure lowering cost while maintaining technical competence; and risk management for risk avoidance to project outcomes. Various models of VM are reviewed across the globe for the development of the framework. The development of an alternative Integrated Value Management framework throughout project phases is expected to give a more value added for both clients and project stakeholders.","PeriodicalId":358440,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Symposium on Business, Engineering and Industrial Applications (ISBEIA)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121679416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Defects represent not only a loss to the project but also hamper the smooth running of the building when in operation when completed. Recognising the need to resolve the continuing problem of defects in their projects, the clients of public hospital projects in Malaysia piloted a scheme to manage defects in public hospital projects during the Defects Liability Period (DLP). This paper presents part of the research which investigates what can be drawn from the analysis of architectural defects in these projects. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was adopted. The findings suggest that with a proper methodology in place, there is much that can be learnt from the studying the cause of the defect. This can provide very useful insights to their root cause and how this can avoided in future projects.","PeriodicalId":358440,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Symposium on Business, Engineering and Industrial Applications (ISBEIA)","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130517517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Forest stand attributes data were collected from Kuala Keniam and Lata Berkoh areas which comprised of two different conditions (known as natural and disturbed areas) with the size of plots of 20 m × 25 m. All trees greater than 1 cm in diameter at breast height (DBH) were measured and identified. A total of 1,398 stems were enumerated in study areas. Basal area of sampled trees was determined. From the analysis of variance, it was found that the difference in the means of the basal area of trees between study sites were not statistically significant at P≤0.05. The forest stand structure described by diameter distribution was inverse J-shaped which indicates the stands are developing and regeneration in the forest is present in the study areas. Information from this study may provide a valuable reference for forest assessment as well as ecotourism planning and management.","PeriodicalId":358440,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Symposium on Business, Engineering and Industrial Applications (ISBEIA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125803462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, compared to developed countries such as Germany, the US, and the UK developing countries are far behind. Many developing countries in Asia region such as China, Indonesia, and Malaysia followed the CI model from the developed countries with some local contents added to it. Due to the novelty of this topic in most developing countries, data is not readily available in the literature. Thus, this study decided to close the significant gap in the literature by doing a research on the development of CI in Malaysia. At the end of the 20th century the Malaysian government initiated a large scale project to develop the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC). This MSC project is part of Malaysia's preparation to become a developed country by the year 2020. With the global phenomenon on technology and multimedia for the last decade, Malaysia does not want to be left behind in this transformation. Hence, the government and the private sector have been working closely to develop the creative content industries, and to make the public aware of the importance of this ‘creative’ economy. Since, the concept of CI in Malaysia is still not clear, a case study method is identified as the best method to understand this sector in the country. This study approached Les'Copaque Production (LCP) an animated and 3D movie private company, to examine their experience in developing their CI products and services in Malaysia. Using a case study approach, a better knowledge and comprehension about the development of CI from Malaysia context would be gathered. This paper discusses the findings as well as some of the limitations of the methodology.","PeriodicalId":358440,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Symposium on Business, Engineering and Industrial Applications (ISBEIA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130687946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A new additional process - twisting-effect removal - is demonstrated to enhance fusion quality. For the purpose of performance characterization, LED fiber source with 650 wavelengths was injected into input fiber while optical power in output fibers was measured by optical power meter. The final results showed that the power-splitting performance of the coupler is satisfying since the insertion loss and excess loss is extremely low (< 7 dB and 0.53 dB, respectively). For video surveillance application, the coupler has potential for high quality video transmission in tree-topology communication system.","PeriodicalId":358440,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Symposium on Business, Engineering and Industrial Applications (ISBEIA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131800871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this study is to determine the stomatal conductance, chlorophyll content, diameter and height at different growth stages of rubber tree saplings. Stomatal conductance, chlorophyll content, diameter and height were measured on the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) saplings. The measurements were done in two weeks period on twenty saplings for each of two growth stages, i.e, 45, and 90 days respectively, and seventeenth saplings for growth stage of 135 days. Electronic devices were used to measure stomatal conductance, chlorophyll content and stem diameter, while measurement tape was used to measure the height of the samples to avoid destructive samplings. Results showed that stomatal conductance decreased with increased growth stages of rubber tree saplings. Chlorophyll content was highest at a growth stage of 90 days, followed by 45 days and 135 days. However, for diameter and height, results indicated the increase in both variables with increase growth stages of saplings. ANOVA of stomatal conductance, chlorophyll content, diameter and height within the growth stages of rubber trees saplings were analysed. From the analysis, the means of stomatal conductance, chlorophyll content, diameter and height were found to be significantly different within the growth stages of rubber tree saplings (P≤0.05). Since rubber plantation is one of the major plantations in Malaysia, the findings from this study may be useful as baseline information on the physiology of rubber trees.","PeriodicalId":358440,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Symposium on Business, Engineering and Industrial Applications (ISBEIA)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125131169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
