Andropogon gayanus was sole ensiled (0% peels) as control (T1). However, it also ensiled with the peels of Citrus sinensis, at 2% (T2), 4% (T3), 6% (T4), Citrillus lanatus at 1% (T5), 3% (T6), %5 (T7) and Ananas comosus at 1% (T8), 3% (T9) and 6% (T10) levels of inclusion respectively, making ten (10) treatments and were replicated three times in a completely randomized design. Means were separated using Fisher’s Least Significant at probability level of 0.05. The Andropogon gayanus was harvested and chopped into 1 to 2 cm manually. The chopped grass was combined with each of the fruit’s peels based on treatments and ensiled for 3weeks in silos at room temperature. They were evaluated for colour, aroma, pH, proximate composition, energy and minerals content. The results revealed that there were significant (P<0.05) differences in all the parameters evaluated. The pH values decrease to acidity with increase in the levels of peels inclusion. In term of minerals contents T1 and T7 were superior in Mg, Ca and Na compared to other treatments. In conclusion, addition of fruits peels in Andropogon gayanus silage improved qualities and it is therefore recommended that, only Citrus sinensis peels can be added up to 6%, while the remaining peels should not exceed 3%, because it may result in poor quality silages with rancid aroma.","PeriodicalId":357523,"journal":{"name":"FUDMA Journal of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121783246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This can lead to serious consequences for household food security in Nigeria. This study was conducted to improve our understanding of the effect of Post-harvest loss in food crops in Katsina State, Nigeria. Primary data were collected from a survey of 240 farming households that were randomly selected across 16 Local Government areas in the State. The results shows that majority of the respondents are within 41-50 years of age and married with household sizes of between 9-16 persons. Sorghum, millet, maize and cowpea are the major food crops that suffer high levels of PHL in Katsina State. Cowpea PHL were higher during storage, Sorghum PHL were higher during threshing and storage while maize PHL were higher during drying and at storage. Millet losses were also higher during threshing and storage respectively. The PHL in cowpea are mainly due to insect pest attack and spillage during post-harvest handling operations. Poor storage conditions and spillage are also responsible for the losses observed in sorghum. Maize PHL are mainly due to theft and spillage while millet losses are due to spillage and poor storage facilities. The study concludes that post-harvest losses significantly influenced household food security in Katsina State. It is therefore recommended that farmers should be trained on Post-harvest management and be provided with modern storage facilities in order to reduce PHL.","PeriodicalId":357523,"journal":{"name":"FUDMA Journal of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131799610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Well-structured questionnaire was used to source for data from 141 hundred randomly selected yam marketers from the urban and rural markets in the zone, the rural markets were Andaha, Anguwan Zaria, Sabon Gida and Gudi while the urban markets includes Garaku, Akwanga, Nassarawa Eggon and Wamba. Descriptive statistic such as frequency, mean, and percentages was used to analyze the data. The result obtained revealed that majority (60%) and (62.5%) were male in the urban and rural markets respectively, with the mean ages of 47 years and 43.9 years respectively. The mean household size was 7 and 6 members for the urban and the rural households respectively. The average yam prices in ₦/kg in the urban /rural markets shows that the highest price was recorded in the urban market (Nassarawa Eggon) and the least price recorded in the rural market (Andaha), the Jarque-Bera test of normality shows that the prices of yam were normally distributed, of all the constraints to yam price formation, poor feeder roads, few number of buyers ranked most in the urban while poor feeder roads, and inadequate access to credit facilities ranked topmost in rural markets. Therefore the research suggests a deliberate government policy towards rehabilitation of roads linking the rural and urban markets, and this may enhance trade between urban and rural markets.","PeriodicalId":357523,"journal":{"name":"FUDMA Journal of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127530571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the level of inputs used in its production are not at the optimum level. This study examined the resource use efficiency of rice producers in Kura LGA of Kano State, Nigeria. Data used for the study was obtained by scheduled interview using structured questionnaires administered to 115 respondents selected using a simple random sampling procedure. Descriptive statistics, budgetary techniques and multiple regression were used to analyze the data. Results obtained revealed that the mean age of the farmers was 31 years, most of the farmers were male, educated and with farming experience of 8 years. Results for profitability of rice production showed that the net farm income for rice production was N176922.2 with a return to Naira investment value of 2.7. This implies that 1N invested on rice production would give a return of N1.7. Results for regression analysis showed that farm size, agrochemicals, and labour had a significant effect on output. Analysis of return to scale was 4.5. This indicates an increasing return to scale with increased use of input resources. Results for resource-use efficiency revealed that farm size, agrochemicals, seed quantity, and labour were under-utilized. Further analysis showed that inadequate capital and poor extension service delivery affected rice production. The study recommended improvement on extension service delivery. The government, Non-governmental organizations and farmer organizations were advised to educate the farmers on appropriate use of farm inputs and ensure the availability of these inputs to farmers at subsidized prices. Farmers could be provided with soft agricultural loans to finance purchase of equipment and production inputs. One hundred and fifty Amor broiler chickens were randomly allotted to five experimental diets formulated to contain Maize offal, Sorghum offal, Wheat offal, Millet offal and Brewers dried grains at 10 and 15% levels of inclusion for broiler starter and finisher phase respectively. Five treatment groups were replicated three times with ten birds per replicate in a completely randomized design. The result of the experiment showed no significant (P>0.05) difference among the haematological values for packed cell volume (PCV), red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell (WBC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), neutrophils and monocytes. Significant effect of diet was only observed on lymphocyte. Serum biochemical parameters were significantly (P<0.05) different in Albumin, Cholesterol and Glucose whose values were however within the normal range for healthy birds. Therefore, it could be concluded that feeding cereal grain by-products to broiler finishers at 15% levels of inclusion has no toxic effect on haematological and serum biochemical indices. This is an indication that broiler chickens fed cereal grain by-products were in good health, nutritionally adequate and in a state of readiness to combat attack by foreign bodies.","PeriodicalId":357523,"journal":{"name":"FUDMA Journal of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126703015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A multistage sampling technique was employed in the selection of 156 respondents. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, budget technique and Cobb-Douglas stochastic frontier production model. The result of the study reveals that the average age of a broiler farmer in the study area was 43 years with a minimum of secondary school education, 10 years of experience in broiler production and an average family size was 7 members. With an average stock of 396 birds, the gross revenue was ₦ 1,766,578, the total cost was ₦1,660,254, and gross margin recorded was ₦106,324. The estimate of the production model revealed that initial stock, feeds, and medication were the significant inputs that influenced the production of broilers. The technical efficiency estimates of the broiler farmers ranged from 78% and 100% with a mean technical efficiency of 92.5%. The high cost of feeds, which constituted 76% of the total variable cost, was identified as the major constraint to broiler production. It is therefore recommended that initiatives that could drastically reduce market price of feeds should be implemented by relevant agencies of governments and NGOs.","PeriodicalId":357523,"journal":{"name":"FUDMA Journal of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130444672","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
