More recently, group-orthogonal CDM-OFDM (GO-CDM-OFDM) has been considered as a suitable method to extract the maximum frequency diversity of the wireless channel by splitting the available subcarriers into (orthogonal) groups and applying optimum detection at the receiver on a per-group basis. One critical parameter of this scheme is the group size as it can effectively act like a complexity-performance trading knob. In this work an adaptive technique to dynamically adjust the group size as a function of the instantaneous operating scenario is presented. It is shown how this adaptivity can bring along important reductions in complexity without compromising error performance.","PeriodicalId":357456,"journal":{"name":"2009 Second International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122031859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, when considering more complex networks, a number of further issues arise that have a significant impact on the performance of channel estimation. More specifically, ad hoc networks usually feature many simultaneous non-orthogonal communications whose impact on channel estimation as well as on higher layers of the protocol stack has not yet been thoroughly studied. In this paper we present some results on the effects of multiuser transmissions on channel state information accuracy in MIMO ad hoc networks, and evaluate the impact of imperfect channel estimation on the performance of MAC protocols. In particular, we consider a cross-layer MAC which accounts for the structure and behavior of the underlying PHY to make decisions on channel access; we then show the interplay between PHY parameters (such as the length of the training sequences used for channel estimation or the number of antennas) and MAClevel performance metrics such as throughput, efficiency, and success ratio. Our results show that relevant tradeoffs arise in this context and allow, e.g., to tune the MAC layer behavior by controlling the channel estimation accuracy.","PeriodicalId":357456,"journal":{"name":"2009 Second International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133799430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An FLA technique based on packet error rate (PER) that makes use of the exponential effective SNR mapping (EESM) is proposed. Additionally, a bit error rate (BER) based FLA scheme is proposed that simplifies the calibration procedure without any significant performance degradation. Results show that both, PER- and BER-based, FLA techniques select the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) in a close to optimum fashion in the sense of maximising the data throughput while satisfying a prescribed packet error rate (PER) target. Channel estimation errors have also been considered, revealing the importance of good channel estimators in order for FLA strategies to work satisfactorily.","PeriodicalId":357456,"journal":{"name":"2009 Second International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":"50 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113970355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Application-aware support is achieved by introducing a bandwidth throttling device, called Virtual BottleNeck (VBN), before the WLAN Access Point. Throttling is set to a bandwidth slightly smaller than the actual WLAN capacity (either known or estimated), so that all packet/frame losses occur inside the VBN. Here, loss events are controlled by a scheduling mechanism devised to operate with information taken from the H.264 Network Abstraction Layer Units (NALUs). Despite its relative simplicity, the implemented scheduler exhibits effective video adaptation performance and close to optimal bandwidth efficiency. Setting up the trial was not trivial due to the lack of suitable publicly available tools. We filled this gap by implementing and integrating several separate software modules, e.g., streaming server, NALU dependency filtering, video frame concealment, etc. As a final result, the experimental trial supports the full delivery chain for an SVC stream with the only limitation of an off-line stream conversion for play-out and Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) measurement purposes, due to the unavailability of real time SVC players.","PeriodicalId":357456,"journal":{"name":"2009 Second International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114248094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Today's DSL is designed under an “always on” principle to keep the crosstalk noise as stable as possible. Departuring from this restriction, one approach to achieve energy savings is by “lazy scheduling” which exploits the tradeoff between energy-consumption and transmission delay inherent in many communication systems. This work extends the scope of this idea to multi-user interference limited systems employing multi-carrier modulation. Mathematical decomposition appears to be a natural approach for cross-layer optimization when the physical-layer spectrum management algorithm is already based on dual relaxation. We identify Benders decomposition as the appropriate choice of an optimization scheme for rate and delay constrained energy-minimization. Based on this we propose a cross-layer scheduler for multi-user/multi-carrier systems. By simulations of a single-hop, multi-user DSL scenario this scheduler is shown to closely approximate the optimal solution to this nonconvex problem. Furthermore, by example we demonstrate that scheduling for interference avoidance in DSL yields negligible additional performance gains over sole physical layer spectrum balancing in practice.","PeriodicalId":357456,"journal":{"name":"2009 Second International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129175059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The WSTM problem is a trade-off between maximizing the sum data rate, and balancing the users' queue lengths. It may therefore be seen as a cross-layer resource allocation objective suited for Best Effort users. A graph-based subcarrier allocation for WSTM, deduced from the pairwise capacity region, is determined. Joint transmission of two interfering links is allowed depending on the convexity of the capacity region, and on the relative links' weights. Subcarrier allocation may be followed by an iterative power control process. Numerical results show that graph-based subcarrier allocation is necessary to avoid interference-limited situations at medium to high load, and that this method followed by power control is more effective than binary allocation to maximize the weighted sum data rate and balance the queue lengths.","PeriodicalId":357456,"journal":{"name":"2009 Second International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122748119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the domains where cross-layer design has been more investigated is Radio Resource Allocation, since current and future networks need to provide wireless connectivity to heterogeneous users, offering many different data traffic types. Nonetheless, new paradigms are emerging in the field of wireless communications, like cognitive radios, wireless systems with relays and Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems, where the potential advantages of cross-layer scheduling are still largely unknown. Moreover, in spite of a large literature on cross-layer, in the most cases different focuses and perspectives, biased by the application(s), are addressed, thus, there is lack of a general framework. The main goal of this paper is not to provide a state of the art on cross-layer scheduling and resource allocation, since this would result maybe in a heterogeneous list of scientific contributions. Rather, we are interested in performing a cataloguing of the work so far, trying to identify common tools and general frameworks used for cross-layer resource allocation, justify them by means of specific network examples and highlight open issues and challenges to be faced. Nevertheless, a preliminary objective of this work is to introduce a set of definitions which can be hopefully agreed by the scientific community.","PeriodicalId":357456,"journal":{"name":"2009 Second International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133379728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The network is hierarchical in that sensors are grouped into clusters, being each cluster under the supervision of a cluster-head (CH). The CH is also in charge of consolidating the sensor observations into a local estimate before its transmission to the Fusion Center (FC). In this context, we ask ourselves about the impact of the packet collisions associated with contention-based multiple-access schemes on the overall distortion in the estimates. To that extent, we derive an approximate yet asymptotically tight expression of the distortion resulting from the adoption of the ALOHA protocol. On that basis, we find a closed-form expression of the optimal time split for sensor-to-CH and CH-to-FC communications. Throughout the paper, we adopt a TDMA reservation-based (i.e. collision-free) multiple-access scheme as a benchmark. Numerical and computer simulation results reveal that the approximations are accurate along with a number of interesting design trade-offs associated with contention- and reservation-based schemes. The analysis is carried out from a cross-layer perspective in that the distortion in the estimates is a function of a number of systems parameters from the PHY (e.g. quantization noise) and MAC (e.g. probability of packet collision) layers of the OSI stack.","PeriodicalId":357456,"journal":{"name":"2009 Second International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":"26 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131254611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
