SCTP's mobility support can be subdivided into 2 areas: path performance evaluation and switch implementation. As a transport layer protocol, SCTP's path performance evaluation is limited by its end-to-end network view. In modern heterogeneous networks, it is likely that the wireless access element of an end-to-end association is the point of performance degradation. SCTP's adherence to protocol boundaries abstracts the precision and meaning of performance metrics. In this paper, we analyze how the emerging cross layer switch management approach, Media Independent Handover (MIH), can be used to optimize path selection for metropolitan area wireless broadband networks. In such an environment line of sight can easily be obstructed, causing temporary path communication failure. We analyze the effectiveness of using Received Signal Strength (RSS) as a performance metric in order to trigger path migration through MIH Link Going Down events. Results are presented which illustrate that our MIH based approach has significant performance improvement over standard SCTP strategies.","PeriodicalId":357456,"journal":{"name":"2009 Second International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126160009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A cross-layer design of networking algorithms adapted to the considered application can significantly improve overall performance metrics. In this paper, distributed signal detection in IR-UWB sensor networks with severe resource constraints is considered. The presented algorithms for power assignment aim at minimizing the energy necessary to meet an overall detection performance by exploiting dependencies between application and physical layer. To account for a limited transmission range of the sensor nodes, the approach is furthermore combined with an application-specific formation of node clusters which allows for a hierarchical transmission of the sensor decisions to a fusion center. Numerical results validate that this cross-layer approach leads to substantial energy savings compared to uniform power assignment.","PeriodicalId":357456,"journal":{"name":"2009 Second International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126990281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To improve TCP performances in wireless networks, we propose a novel TCP congestion control mechanism with QoS-guaranteed cross-layer optimization that can be easily implemented with fewer overheads. The simulation results demonstrate that our scheme can effectively improve reliability with small variances of throughput and delay and greatly guarantee end to end QoS requirements.","PeriodicalId":357456,"journal":{"name":"2009 Second International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124476371","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The algorithm can be used with the emerging wireless standards such as IEEE 802.16 and HSDPA. Our focus is maximizing the video perceptual quality after delivery with constraint of the limited wireless resources and the delay requirements from the practical point of view. At the application layer, the relative importance of each packet to the video perceptual quality is estimated by a Packet Relative Importance Index in a low complexity computation, which is evaluated directly in video compressed domain. At the physical layer, the channel state information is derived and an adaptive modulation coding design is introduced. Thus, the scheduling algorithm at the media access control layer for multiple mobile users is proposed depending on the information provided by the application and physical layer with the objective of maximizing the video quality. Simulations show that the proposed scheme performs significantly than the conventional scheduling schemes for video transmission.","PeriodicalId":357456,"journal":{"name":"2009 Second International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132104474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider a set of mobile users interested in communicating with several access points (APs). Multi-hop routing, possibly across different transmission technologies, is exploited to extend the coverage for those users that are not within the transmission range of any of the APs. This is implemented through the Ambient Networks (AN) architecture [1], by means of its functional entities (FE) and in particular exploiting the Composition FE. In this architecture, FEs are used to estimate the system conditions across technologies and possibly networks, by operating in a cross-layer fashion and interacting with each other and with standard protocols. Our evaluation of AN heterogeneous routing is carried out via ns2 simulation, through a careful modeling of the considered radio interfaces. At the end of the paper simulation results are discussed to prove the effectiveness of the AN architecture in the considered scenario.","PeriodicalId":357456,"journal":{"name":"2009 Second International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128530327","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Similar gains can be realized in the downlink of a cellular system with respect to the total cell throughput, if the base station serves multiple single-antenna mobiles simultaneously; however, the maximum rate of each individual user is relatively small then. In this paper, it is investigated, whether channel state information at the base station (“smart MISO”) or additional receive antennas at the mobile terminals (“dumb MIMO”) are more important from a cross-layer scheduling perspective. In this paper, a transmission power allocation algorithm is presented that is adapted to distributed detection in wireless sensor networks with soft decision fusion. Specifically, the objective is to minimize the global probability of detection error given a fixed level of total transmission power in the network. This cross-layer scheme is based on an optimization problem defined for the multiuser resource allocation. The new approach consists in combining information provided by the PHY and MAC layers in order to achieve an efficient and low-complexity sub-band allocation under quality of service (QoS) requirements. PHY level is responsible for providing the channel quality of each user by exploiting the effective SINR method, while the MAC level is in charge of classifying the existing users in order to differentiate between two major classes: hard-QoS and soft-QoS. The new low-complexity scheme performance is close to that of the optimal solution and it outperforms the single-user solution adopted by the multi-band UWB systems.","PeriodicalId":357456,"journal":{"name":"2009 Second International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129831083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Under these QoS constraints and with limited available radio resources (frequency band and transmit power), the capacity of the system in terms of the number of servable users is to be maximized. A cross-layer framework is introduced where subchannel assignment, power allocation, adaptive modulation and coding, and ARQ protocol are jointly taken into account. Due to the complex structure of the optimization a suboptimal solution is proposed, which is shown by numerical experiments to be computationally tractable yet yielding relatively satisfactory system performance.","PeriodicalId":357456,"journal":{"name":"2009 Second International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121890995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It includes the communication hardware components and the modes of operation. The power consumption for transmitting is modeled by the output power and the drain efficiency of the power amplifier, considering drain efficiency is a linear function of output power. Power consumption model parameters are extracted for a commercial sensor node. This model is applied on a WSN based on cooperative clusters to obtain the outage performance of the cooperative model and the optimal node number per cluster. In order to save energy the sensor nodes can be in sleep mode, therefore the outage performance and the cooperative WSN energy consumption are analyzed under the hypothesis that only a set of sensors are awake. The results of this analysis are presented in this work.","PeriodicalId":357456,"journal":{"name":"2009 Second International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":"0 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123075970","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
