Drawing from findings of a recent Australian qualitative study into the topic, principles for increasing midwifery leadership skills, exploring personal commitment to improving maternity care and establishing relationships with key stakeholders are discussed. Current midwifery leaders as well as the leaders of the future have an important role to play in the expansion of MCoC and strengthening of the midwifery profession.","PeriodicalId":35678,"journal":{"name":"Practising Midwife","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74973844","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In years past the subject has been taught from an exceedingly negative perspective. This was a desperate bid to encourage non-indigenous nurses and midwives to care. Following the example given by Boler in the Pedagogy of Discomfort1 it was an attempt to engage the empathy of student nurses and midwives.","PeriodicalId":35678,"journal":{"name":"Practising Midwife","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75793809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Human newborns, like many infant mammals, are born sentient, learning and expectant of love, nourishment and nurturing relationships.1 Healthy infants are born with unique adaptations that optimise their survival, prompting care-giving behaviours in their mothers and/or parents.2 Understanding what neonates need is important to midwives and those caring for families, at birth and in the weeks and months that follow. In this topic highlight, we look at the newborn’s sensory needs with a focus on human consciousness, connections and care.","PeriodicalId":35678,"journal":{"name":"Practising Midwife","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86476197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Maternity care at Waminda is known as Minga Gudjaga, and through this service, Elders and Aunties enact thousands of years of Indigenous knowledge to ensure the cultural safety and health of Minga (mothers) and Gudjaga (babies).1 A clinical placement at Waminda for one Indigenous midwifery student proved pivotal to her growth and vision as a midwife and an Aboriginal woman.","PeriodicalId":35678,"journal":{"name":"Practising Midwife","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72804383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
