In Australia, the caesarean birth rate has risen to 37.2%, rising from 7% in 1980, translating to an increase of over 500% in 52 years. In this series we will look at the growing trend for caesarean birth, the reasons women have caesarean births, the risks associated, and the maternal mortality rate associated with caesarean births. A look at some consumer feedback about their experience of caesarean birth will highlight the gaps in knowledge for some women. I asked colleagues to paint or draw a flower for me and then I explored the symbol or meaning of that flower to inform my reflection. Drawing from findings of a recent Australian qualitative study into the topic, principles for increasing midwifery leadership skills, exploring personal commitment to improving maternity care and establishing relationships with key stakeholders are discussed. The TTMEC includes representatives from 27 member organisations who meet every month to address and discuss key issues and aspects of midwifery education. I am writing this article as the former chair of this consortium, a role I held from March 2021 to March 2022.
