The resulting organic layer was purified by C18 reversed-phase column chromatography and HPLC to achieve the separation of nine scalarane-type sesterterpenes, including one new compound with eight known scalarane analogs. The chemical structures of the isolated compounds 1−9 were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR and MS data analysis. All nine compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial activities against three Gram-positive and three Gram-negative bacteria. The compound 3 exhibited potent antibacterial activities against Bacillus subtilis and Micrococcus luteus. The compounds 7 and 9 displayed considerable activities against Bacillus subtilis and the others had moderate results.","PeriodicalId":35665,"journal":{"name":"Ocean and Polar Research","volume":"42 1","pages":"15-20"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70346579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sampling of surface seawater and coastal groundwater was conducted in Woljeongri, Pyoseon, and Kwakgi beaches, in three sampling campaigns (June, July, and October 2016). The concentrations of DOC in groundwater were relatively higher in June and October than in July. Salinity and DOC concentrations in the coastal groundwater of Woljeongri and Pyoseon beaches did not show a marked relationship, whereas those in Kwakgi beach showed a good positive correlation (July: R = 0.64, P < 0.01; October: R = 0.95, P < 0.01). In addition, the concentrations of CDOM (C and M peaks) in the groundwater of Woljeongri and Pyoseon beaches, where saline groundwater discharge dominates, were relatively higher than those of Kwakgi beach, where fresh groundwater discharge dominates. The relatively higher DOC concentrations in the coastal groundwater of Woljeongri and Pyoseon, with higher CDOM concentrations, seem to be mainly from anthropogenic sources such as local pollution sources (i.e., aquaculture wastewater or domestic sewage). In order to understand the behavior of DOC in the coastal groundwater of a volcanic island, extensive studies are necessary in the future over a larger-area and greater time-scales using various isotopic tracers.","PeriodicalId":35665,"journal":{"name":"Ocean and Polar Research","volume":"40 1","pages":"77-85"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70346788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Deformities and hatching rates of fertilized grouper eggs were observed at salinities of 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, and 39 psu. The optimal salinity was determined to be 36 psu, with a survival rate of 70.0 ± 2.0%. Transportation experiments at 36 psu were conducted at water temperatures of 21, 24, 27, and 30 o C, different developmental stages such as morula, 5-myomere, and tail beating for hatching and survival rates. The optimal water temperature and developmental stage for transporatation were 30 o C and tail beating stage and those hatching rates were 50.6 ± 1.9% and 86.3 ± 1.3%, respectively. At 21 o C, the survival rate by transportation water temperature was highest (73.1 ± 10.6%), but the hatching rate (17.1 ± 3.1%) was lowest. Therefore, the hybrid grouper fertilized eggs ( E. fuscoguttatus ♀ × E . lanceolatus ♂ ) can be most efficiently produced under long-distance transportation conditions during the tail beating stage and at a water temperature of 30 o C.","PeriodicalId":35665,"journal":{"name":"Ocean and Polar Research","volume":"40 1","pages":"161-167"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70346843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Jung, Chung-Il Lee","doi":"10.4217/OPR.2018.40.3.127","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4217/OPR.2018.40.3.127","url":null,"abstract":"This study analyzed the influence of climate change on the spawning ground area of the common squid, Todarodes pacificus. To estimate long term changes in the area of the spawning ground of the common squid, water temperature at 50 m deep that can be inferred from sea surface temperature (SST) based on both NOAA/AVHRR (1981.07−2002.12) and MODIS/AQUA (2003.01−2009.12) ocean color data was analyzed. In addition, five climate indices, Arctic Oscillation Index (AO), Siberian High Index (SH), Aleutian Low Pressure Index (ALP), East Asia Winter Monsoon Index (EAWM) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) which are the main indicators of climate changes in the northwestern Pacific were used to study the relationship between the magnitude of the estimated spawning ground and climate indices. The area of the estimated spawning ground was highly correlated with the total catch of common squid throughout four decades. The area of the estimated spawning ground was negatively correlated with SH and EAWM. Especially, PDO was negatively correlated with the area of the spawning ground in the northwestern Pacific (r = -0.39) and in the southern part of the East Sea (r = -0.38). There was a positive relationship between the AO and the area of the spawning ground in the northwestern Pacific (r = 0.46) as well as in the southern part of the East Sea (r = 0.32). Temporally, the area of the winter spawning ground in the southern part of the East Sea in the 1980s was smaller than those areas in the 1990s and 2000s, because the area was disconnected with the western coastal spawning ground of Japan in the 1980s, while the area had been made wider and more continuous from the Korea strait to the western coastal water of Honshu in the 1990s and 2000s.","PeriodicalId":35665,"journal":{"name":"Ocean and Polar Research","volume":"40 1","pages":"127-143"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70346830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
