More and more sophisticated applications are being developed and a very promising market is quickly being established where mobile users might access multimedia data while roaming from a cell to another, anytime and everywhere. Such scenario requires a strong infrastructure in order to adequately manage all the different issues related with high-level service provisioning. QoS represents one of the most crucial issues as it involves many different aspects and directly impacts the user satisfaction. In order to achieve this target, we propose an architecture, which allows mobile devices to access advanced services available in the wired part of the network. This architecture, based on mobile agents technology, assumes the presence of a VOD virtual server. The strategy adopted is to hide all the basic mechanisms inside a middleware layer that provides necessary interfaces to allow a simple interaction between the user on the one side and the network and the distributed services on the other. The overall architecture, that is currently being implemented and tested, has been used as an experimental environment to provide mobile users with a new service to access MPEG-4 flows.","PeriodicalId":356589,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Eighth IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications. These systems may not be spectrally efficient in case of group or broadcast-based voice and data calls, a common feature of PMR systems. We propose a new asymmetric PMR system comprising a wideband OFDM-based downlink and a narrowband uplink, which not only achieves a better spectral efficiency but also can support high bit rate multimedia applications. The system is shown to have high trunking efficiency since all users are assumed to use the pool of channels available in the wideband downlink. In this paper, we study the performance and capacity of a private mobile radio system using a digital audio broadcasting (DAB) downlink. In particular, we study the efficiency of such a system for voice calls using voice activity detection and statistical multiplexing. Moreover, we show that, the efficiency of the system can significantly increase, if the incoming calls, which can not find an available channel, are allowed to wait a certain amount of time before occupying a channel.","PeriodicalId":356589,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Eighth IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications. In this paper, a new queue management algorithm, termed self adjustable choke (SAC) is proposed to achieve both fairness and congestion control in an Internet router. It is based on the well-known RED algorithm and a recently proposed CHOKe algorithm. The SAC scheme has kept the advantages of simplicity and lower processing cost of RED and CHOKe, while solving their unfair bandwidth allocation properties. In particular, the SAC scheme treats TCP and UDP flows differently, and can adaptively adjust its parameters according to the current traffic status. As a result, using the SAC, bandwidth is distributed evenly among different flows, no matter how different these flows are. It resolves some of the problems common for many types of existing probing methods, e.g. the long latency and large probe traffic. Contrary to traditional estimates of available bandwidth, SMART is not a methodology based on packet dispersion in packet pair or packet train, but a completely new methodology in the light of probability and statistics. The fundamental idea is to send very small packets at random moment and calculate the proportion of minimal delay ion total test samples. To reach this purpose, we redefine the available bandwidth based on probability and statistics. Because of the global coverage of the system it becomes more economic for the rural areas where there is no wired infrastructures of communication. Besides being more economic to the rural areas the satellite networks are not affected by the natural disasters and continue to give the service in such situations. In this research a routing method in a routing set concept is investigated. Among which, denial-of-service (DoS) and distributed DoS (DDoS) pose significant problems, as they are disruptive to the useful traffics and are hard to prevent. One solution consists in instituting accountability, which hold the attackers accountable for the attack. The key issue is to identify the real sources of the attacks and attackers use spoofed IP address to hide their actual network location. However, the Internet architecture does not provide intrinsic support for identifying the real sources of IP packets. Numerous mechanisms have been proposed to traceback the real sources. Most of such networks have been addressing the IP version 4. In this paper, we address the issues of IP traceback in the context of IPv6 and mobile IPv6. This paper provides a detailed analysis of these issues and problems. The main problem lies with the transformations that are introduced by IPv6 and mobile IPv6 protocols, namely tunneling and addresses manipulation. In this work we propose a distributed control scheme based on preferred link approach for establishing reliability-constrained least-cost lightpaths, by choosing the reliability of a lightpath to denote the level of fault-tolerance required by the connection request. Four heuristics are proposed and their performance is studied through extensive simulation experiments. The simulation results suggest that our heuristics provide better performance compared to other distributed protocols available, in terms of average call acceptance rate, average path cost, average routing distance, and average connection setup time; when the connection requests with different levels of fault-tolerance requirements arrive to and depart from the network randomly.","PeriodicalId":356589,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Eighth IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications. The elimination improves channel reliability and leads to shorter service roundtrip time (RTT) because of reduced retransmission. The FLC combines the extant, less adaptive PID controller with fuzzy logic, which divides the original PID control domain into finer fuzzy regions. Then, every region is governed by a predefined fuzzy rule or simply a don't care state that requires no computation or parametric changes. The goal of the don't care states is to offset the FLC complexity so that the controller execution time is reduced. The FLC adaptively maintains the given safety margin /spl Delta/ of the chosen objective function {0, /spl Delta/}/sup 2/. The value for /spl Delta/ is normally a preset difference between the buffer length and the queue length. In tropical region, rain attenuation is the major constraint for implementing microwave system above 10 GHz. The extreme of propagation channel environment due to rain was brought to the research and development of adaptive transmit power control (ATPC) in microwave transceiver. ATPC varies the transmit power level in order to maintain the receive signal level (RSL) above the threshold for bit-error-rate (BER) desired. This paper discussed the design and performance analysis of ATPC in simulation and experiments. Simulation is performed for analyzing the effect of ATPC to the transceiver non-linearity performance. The IP-based virtual private network (VPN) technology is rapidly becoming the foundation for the delivery of future Internet services, and many service providers are offering value-added applications on top of their VPN transport networks. Two unique and complementary architectures based on traditional industry standard encrypted tunnels (IPSec) and still developing multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) technologies are emerging to form the predominant framework for delivery of high performance VPN services. We analyzed the strengths and the weaknesses of both the approaches, and compared their performance and scalability features by carefully testing them against the requirements of the future optical high performance backbones. Our technical considerations and experimental results strongly emphasized the better scalability and reliability of the MPLS/BGP model that seems to be the most promising approach for the provisioning of VPN services on the future Giga-speed optical backbones.","PeriodicalId":356589,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Eighth IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications.
