Originally introduced by Salovey and Mayer in 1990, the fundamental principles of EI were further developed by Goleman and expanded to include the following five key components: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills that can be learned, measured, and further developed. Ski patrols, acting as a crucial first line of medical response personnel in remote, dynamic, and environmentally challenging alpine settings, stabilize patients and manage extrications under the protocols of the National Ski Patrol's Outdoor Emergency Care program. Emergency nurses, in turn, leverage advanced clinical skills and a broader scope of practice within a controlled hospital environment to continue patient care started in the mountain and austere environments. This partnership and collaboration are essential in rural areas where access to advanced life support may be delayed due to severe weather or difficult terrain, necessitating robust on-mountain care. Acknowledging that many ski patrollers already possess emergency medical services training, the relationship emphasizes collaboration and shared expertise rather than a strict division of labor. The synthesis of these two disciplines creates a more seamless continuum of care, improving patient outcomes from the moment of injury on the mountain to definitive treatment in the emergency department.</p>","PeriodicalId":35641,"journal":{"name":"Nursing","volume":"56 5","pages":"34-39"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147723857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pain due to lumbar facet joint pathology is estimated to occur in 15% to 45% of those with low back pain. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a common interventional pain management procedure used to treat lumbar facet joint disease (LFJD). RFA is available for patients when conservative treatment has been unsuccessful. A major benefit to RFA is the diminished need for the use of opioid and other potentially harmful medications. RFA also has the potential to prevent the need for more invasive treatment. The procedures necessary prior to RFA and RFA itself are performed in outpatient settings and allow patients to quickly return to their normal activities post procedure. This article describes the risk factors, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and nursing considerations of a patient with LFJD. The steps to an RFA and the RFA procedure itself are also discussed.</p>","PeriodicalId":35641,"journal":{"name":"Nursing","volume":"56 4","pages":"29-35"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147499196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
