This study was undertaken in order to assess which parameters influence wingsail performance of C-Class catamarans, and to what extent, the results from the wind tunnel can be applied in the design developments of future wingsails. A combined wing sail and C- class catamaran was tested in the low-speed section of the 7’ x 5’ wind tunnel at the University of Southampton. Testing assessed the appropriate settings for the movable element of the multiple-element wing sail as well as heeling angle,trampoline porosity, spanwise camber distribution and gap at the foot of the wingsail. Both upwind and downwind conditions were considered through measurement of driving force, heeling force, heeling and yawl moments. The results demonstrate that low heel angles improve overall performance and that the gap underneath the wingsail foot adversely affects the generation of lift by the sail. An airfoil shaped trampoline is suggested in order to benefit both a reduced gap and a better control over the heel. For heavy wind condition, negative twist at the tip of the wingsail allows higher boat speeds","PeriodicalId":355970,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Small Craft Technology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134562086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The smaller vessels’ operations often take them across the main shipping routes, where large vessels operate with restricted ability to manoeuvre. There is a potential risk for a small passenger vessel to be struck by a larger ship, and for a disastrous outcome, as was illustrated by the collision between the Marchioness and the Bow Belle on the Thames 1989.","PeriodicalId":355970,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Small Craft Technology","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128187750","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A standard is required which enables their stability to be assessed at a similar level to that of monohull yachts. Unfortunately their stability characteristics and behaviour are very different to those of monohulls, and the normal methods of assessment are not appropriate. Some aspects of multihull capsizing are addressed, with a discussion of the results of an innovative programme of wind tunnel and towing tank tests. It is hoped that the paper will be of assistance in directing others in their assessment of multihull safety, and will provide a technical basis for further discussion of the subject.","PeriodicalId":355970,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Small Craft Technology","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133911532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Now classes from Minis to Maxis are designed with canting keels, but several recent high profile failures in the Vendee Globe and Sydney Hobart have brought designers back to the drawing board to have a closer look at the design and construction methods involved for both the keel fin and the actuation system. Although rules are now beginning to appear for stability criteria and safety in the event of actuation failure, there are not as yet any general structural guidelines beyond the ABS Guide for Offshore Racing Yachts. Aimed at more conventional yachts they can never hope to take into account the complicated loadings on canting keels. Estimates of hydrodynamic loads, slamming loads, grounding loads and loads from the ever increasing danger of hitting unidentified floating objects must be made. Then tools such as FEA are invaluable in the analysis of a structures response. Choices of material and construction are based on the type of yacht and racing it will be required to do as well as restrictions in some class rules such as the Volvo Open 70. Optimisation of sailing characteristics, weight, safety and operation are all taken into account. Once built and fitted, the work is not over as keels are routinely checked for structural integrity before and after major events even before their estimated fatigue mileage is complete. Owen Clarke Design has been associated with canting keel design for many years, during which time there has inevitably been an evolution in techniques and many learning experiences. The aim of this work is to pull together our experience in design, construction and analysis into a reference that others may benefit from and add to, in order to improve safety and reliability of canting keel design.","PeriodicalId":355970,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Small Craft Technology","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126267950","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
