It is focused on the impact of the bit error characteristics of a wireless link on wireless ATM access networks. A possible error control architecture is suggested to improve the CLR performance degradation caused by channel bit errors. The recommended error control scheme for CBR traffic is the concatenated forward error correction (FEC) scheme to make the physical layer as SONET-like as possible. It is confirmed that CLR performance of the network with the recommended scheme is superior to those of access networks with conventional schemes.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. Obviously, the introduction of GPRS affects on the voice services. In this paper, the outage probability of non-frequency hopping and frequency hopping systems with different frequency reuse factor has been calculated in order to investigate those effects. The number of unused voice channels allocated to GPRS depends on the difference between the outage level of the existing GSM network and the maximum acceptable level. For both non-frequency hopping and frequency hopping systems, GPRS affects the QoS of voice services of the network with small reuse factor are higher than that of the network with large reuse factor. GPRS will reduce the cell service area, but the reduction percentage of the cell service area for the system with a small reuse factor is higher than that for the system with a large reuse factor.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. The balanced structure is constituted to reduce the effect of the currents in the handset unit. In order to confirm the effectiveness of using the balance-fed loop antenna, the current distribution for both the balanced and unbalanced antenna systems are analyzed theoretically and experimentally. Remarkable reduction in the current distribution on the ground plane in the handset for the case of the balance-fed antennas system is shown. There are two advantages in using the L-type element. One is observed in the handset in its talk position and the other is the mitigation of multipath fading. Modulation schemes are analyzed from the power amplifier implementation point of view by comparing the RF envelopes of various modulation schemes. The power amplifier linearity requirements of different modulation schemes are compared using a measured class AB power amplifier. One of the challenges in WCDMA is the implementation of the transmitter for a WCDMA terminal supporting both speech and high-speed data. It is assumed that the initial frequency error of a MS can be as large as /spl plusmn/20 kHz due to the inaccuracy of the crystal oscillator. The proposed methods are based on the fast Fourier transform (FFT) technique with quadratic interpolation in the frequency domain to improve the accuracy of frequency estimation. This is why the MAI can be suppressed by channel equalization. In this paper we present a receiver algorithm which performs adaptive channel equalization by estimating the transmitted chip sequence. The adaptation uses Griffiths' algorithm and converges to the LMMSE solution. The receiver is applicable in systems using long code scrambling such as in the 3/sup rd/ generation wideband CDMA proposals, and it is shown to offer significant performance gains when compared to conventional RAKE receivers.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. The service offered combined video- and text communication. The objective of the experiment was to determine the minimal bandwidth requirements for deaf sign language users and to measure the effect of variable video picture quality on the use of the text telephone. The results of this study indicate that deaf persons who use sign language as their main communication mode are highly adaptable and prefer to use signs even if the video image quality is poor. At the same time, deaf persons expressed a preference for having a text messaging facility available in combination with videotelephony. It was found that the use of the text messages increased with deteriorating video picture quality. A bandwidth of 128 kbps was considered highly useable. The IEEE and ETSI have proposed wireless LAN standards which utilize technological advances to provide high bandwidth. However, the investigation of the capabilities of applied wireless technologies to provide LAN services are of both technical and economical interest. This paper proposes a generic architecture and set of functions for DECT access to an Ethernet LAN and elaborates a dynamic bandwidth management scheme for the DECT air interface to ensure optimum resource utilisation.
