To fulfill this objective Landsat 8 image and digital elevation model (DEM) of the studied area were used to define the geomorphic units of the studied area. The geomorphic units of the area under consideration could be grouped and described as Young Alluvial Plain, Old alluvial Plains, Pedi Plain, Playa and Aeolian Plain. The different geomorphic units were represented by 26 soil profiles. The obtained results indicate that, the studied soils are dominated by Kaolinite clay mineral followed by montmorillonite, interstratified minerals and illites. Also, chlorite minerals are presented in variable frequency depending on the parent material of these soils. The minerals assemblage are interpreted in terms of lithology and depositional environments. The mode of formation of the pre-wet climatic condition is in contrast to the present aridity status. Mineralogical composition of the sand fraction showed that, light minerals are the major component and mainly dominated by quartz which constitutes more them 89%. Feldspars are depicted with a few amounts not exceed 11% and represented by plagioclase, orthoclase and microcline. On the other hand, heavy minerals are dominated by opaques which constitute from 33% to 60.3%. Non-opaque minerals are dominated by pyroboles (pyroxene + Amphiboles,) followed by very stable minerals (Zircon, rutile and tourmaline). Slightly stable minerals (garnet and epidote) and stable minerals (staurolite, kyanite, silimanite and andalusite) are found in less pronounced amounts. The frequency distribution of very stable minerals (Zircon, rutile and tourmaline) and weathering ratios lead to conclusion that, the studied soils are heterogeneous either due to their multi-origin and or multi-depositional regimes.","PeriodicalId":355116,"journal":{"name":"Menoufia Journal of Soil Science","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114137722","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is located between latitudes 25o15ʽ and 26o05 ʽN. and longitudes 30o05 ʽ and 30o45 ʽE., having an area of 18813.8 km2. The aim of this investigation is to study the characteristics of soils and groundwater in this area for evaluating their capability and suitability for growing main crops using RS and GIS. The obtained geomorphic map showed that, the area comprises three distinct geomorphic units namely, high land (28.8%), plateau (39.3%) and depression floor (31.9%). The depression floor of various origin and almost flat areas is the main landforms and suitable units for developmental plans. The soils were classified up to sub great group level on the basis of Soil Survey Staff (2014). Land evaluation was conducted using a model depend on the bases of Sys & Verheye index and land suitability for irrigated agriculture. Accordingly, the current capability of the studied soils was classified as: fair (III) for about 45% from the studied area, poor IV (about 50%) and very poor N for the remaining area. By executing a suitable improvement practices, these classes could be developed to the following three potential capability classes; good (II), fair (III) and poor (IV). Also, soil suitability for growing specific field, vegetable and fruit crops were evaluated in the studied geomorphic units. \u0000The quality evaluation of ground water resources showed that, the pH values ranged from ultra-acid (3.47 north El-Kharga) to slightly alkaline (7.83 in Max Qibly). The salinity of ground water changed from 0.48 to 119 dS m-1 indicating non-saline to very extremely saline, TDS values varied from 307.2 to 71424 ppm (fresh, brackish, to extremely saline water). Total hardness varied from soft to very hard.","PeriodicalId":355116,"journal":{"name":"Menoufia Journal of Soil Science","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126383189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Forced ventilation was employed in one of the piles of each manure, whereas mechanical turning was used in the other two piles. The temperature, pH, EC, bulk density, organic carbon, organic matter total nitrogen and C/N ratio were investigated at 0, 1, 7, 20, 35, 50, 65 and 80 days of composting of cattle (CM) and poultry (PM) manures piles under FVS and MTS techniques. In the FVS piles, temperatures degree were 70 and 65 °C at seven days of composting and remained stable up to 40 days. Whereas, the temperatures of MTS piles, peaked 51.0 ℃ and 58.1 at 7 days of composting period for the CM and PM, respectively, it approximately remained stable up to 50 day. The FVS had a significant impact on the content of organic carbon and OM, of both poultry and cattle manures, in compared to the MTS. During the composting periods of all piles showed that, the increase in percentage of total nitrogen was mostly observed in 35 day for forced aeration System \"FVS\" piles with poultry and/or cattle manure. The C/N ratio of poultry and cattle manure piles significantly affected with the forced aeration system (Forced Ventilation System \"FVS\") than with the Mechanically Turned System \"MTS\".","PeriodicalId":355116,"journal":{"name":"Menoufia Journal of Soil Science","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122189176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is representing an area of about 372062 feddans. The aim of this work was to study the geomorphology, characteristics and mineralogy of some soils in El-Farafra Oasis, New Valley governorate, Egypt. Visual interpretation of 2 sentinel images and digital elevation model (DEM) were used to produce the geomorphic units and soil maps of the studied area. Two geomorphic units were identified namely plateau and depression floor. Eighty-two minipits and eighteen soil profiles were chosen to represent the main soil mapping units in the studied area. Soil samples were collected from the representative soil profiles for physical, chemical and mineralogical analysis. The results could be summarized as follows: X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that kaolinite is alternatively dominated in the studied soils (about 80 %) followed by smectite. Illite, interstratified minerals and chlorite are found as the lowest abundant clay minerals in these soils. The mineralogical composition of the sand fraction indicated that, the light fraction is composed almost entirely of quartz which constitutes about 95%. Feldspar minerals (orthoclase plagioclase and microcline) are detected in trace amounts. The presence of feldspars indicates that, the soils are young from the pedological point of views. Heavy minerals are generally dominated by opaque’s (about 55 %). Non-opaques are mainly dominated by pyroboles (pyroxenes + amphipoles) followed by ultra-stable minerals (zircon, rutile and tourmaline), Para metamorphic minerals (garnet, kyanite, staurolite, silimanite) and epidote. While the other minerals (biotite andalusite, glaucohite and apatite) are detected in less pronounced amounts. Distribution of the resistant minerals (biotite and amphipoles) weathering ratio, values indicate that, the soils are generally heterogeneous either due to their multi-origin or due to a subsequent variation along the course formation.","PeriodicalId":355116,"journal":{"name":"Menoufia Journal of Soil Science","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126859371","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
