Center marks result in unnecessary efforts and waste fabric. Therefore, solutions to eliminate the occurrence of these defects are necessary. It is not clear whether center marks are a product of knitting or the dyeing process. The marks are usually inspected visually by the operator at the production line using front and back lighting. In this study, we examined the shapes and color distributions of the loops in dyed and finished fabrics and we assessed the state of these visual inspection methods using different lighting conditions. Consequently, the exact shape of the center marks was found to be caused by the bulging of successive vertical loops and the center marks are not caused by dyeing. More exactly, the bulging shape consisted of narrowed loops and two neighboring loops. Furthermore, it became clear that center marks were visually recognized (1) by the shadow casted by the bulging due to the side light, or (2) by the reduction of light transmission by the reduced loop space when using back light. Finally, we concluded that the prevention of the formation of the bulging shape and prevention of the reduction of loop space are the two counter-measures necessary to eliminate center marks in the future.","PeriodicalId":35429,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Textile Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78273575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twenty-seven female and 24 male university students (20–24 years old) participated in the assessment. The surface and compression properties of fabrics were measured with the KES system. The tactile feels of softness and of smoothness were related to the geometrical roughness (SMD) and compression linearity (LC). The tactile feel was worse for washed towels with higher SMD and LC values. For washed towel fabrics, we found no significant correlation between the tactile feel and compression energy (WC). The results were related to the changes that occurred in the pile loop geometry during washing and caused matting of the pile. The changes were characterized by the ratio of ground fabric area observed in microscope images. To evaluate the initial resistance of the matted pile, we measured the frictional force (Ff) during movement of a friction contactor on the pile. The slope of the Ff peak (S-FfP) was a useful indicator for investigating the tactile change in towel fabrics after washing.","PeriodicalId":35429,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Textile Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76048492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mukai, Song Liu, Eiji Amano","doi":"10.4188/jte.66.7","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4188/jte.66.7","url":null,"abstract":"In this study, a composite fabric was prepared by combining nanofiber having an extremely high specific surface area with nanosized carbon black (CB) having a solute adsorption capacity to purify contaminated water. The nanofiber fabric made of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) with a mean fiber diameter of 400 nm was used as a base material. The CB particles with an original size of 20 nm were used as adsorbent and dispersed in pure water at the concentration of 10 g/L. Before preparation, the CB particles were oxidized by mixing CB with 70% nitric acid at a ratio of 1 g to 1 mL and heating for 2 hours with agitation. The surface of CB particles became hydrophilic by oxidization, and the size of CB particles became the original one in the dispersion. The nanofiber fabric was immersed in the CB dispersion and shaken for 2 hours. After taking out and rinsing it lightly, CB was immobilized on the surface of nanofibers by heating for 1 hour at 150 °C. The adsorption performances of the different CB particles and the prepared CB-supported PAN nanofiber fabrics were evaluated by the static adsorption test using methylene blue (MB) as an adsorbate. The saturated adsorption amount of the oxidized CB-supported PAN nanofiber fabric was as high as 96.2 mg/g. The dynamic adsorption test of MB was also carried out on the untreated CB-supported PAN nanofiber fabric and the oxidized CB-supported PAN nanofiber fabric. Model equations based on the pseudo-first-kinetic model were derived to analyze the various parameters of the dynamic adsorption. The obtained results suggested a potential application of the oxidized CB-supported PAN nanofiber fabric in the contaminated water treatment field.","PeriodicalId":35429,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Textile Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77667470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, when we wear a comfortable garment, many yarns in it are not stretched. So, we consider that the transition behavior of textile materials from relaxed to low-stress conditions is important in evaluating the comfort of a garment. As a preliminary study, we developed an analytical method for tensile-test results of slacked yarn, where we applied the Savitzky-Golay approach to compute the second derivative-graphs of the original curves and fitted them with two beta distribution probability density functions using the least-squares method. In the experiment, we measured the tensile-test curves of an untwisted polyester multifilament yarn with intentional slack. Our results show that the second-derivative graph is well summarized by our model using the least-squares method. As well, the overall load-extension properties, including slack length of each specimen, also can be analyzed objectively in our method.","PeriodicalId":35429,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Textile Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89586934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there are few studies of how the visual and tactile stimuli influence the recognition of fabrics based on short-term memory. This study examines how the memory of fabric texture is retained and is transferred between visual and haptic perceptions by intra- and inter-modal recognition experiments. Fabric was recognized under both haptic and visual single-modal conditions. Visual recognition was superior to haptic recognition under single-modal conditions, consisting of visual learning followed by a visual test and haptic learning followed by haptic test. The inter-modal experiment showed that the cross-modal recognition of fabric was possible, regardless of the order of encoding and recalling fabrics by touch or visually. Therefore, single common cross-modal representation is used when fabrics are recognized.","PeriodicalId":35429,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Textile Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72889215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With this aim, various samples were obtained by changing the Fleecy-Yarn fibre content, the Face-yarn type, the number of Fleecy-Yarn floating, the Fleecy-Yarn pile length, and finishing process called as main parameters. After the raising process, the raising fastness (in-house term) of these fabrics were evaluated. After tests, the data were statistically analysed by variance analysis (ANOVA) to determine the effect of the main parameters on the fibre loss performance of these raised fabrics. The results showed that Fleecy-Yarn fibre content and finishing process were statistically significant.
