In this paper, we argue for efficient presence management by means of a holistic view of both physical context and virtual presence in online communication channels. We sketch the components for enabling presence as a service integrating both online information as well as physical sensors, discussing benefits, possible applications on top, and challenges of establishing such a service.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"143 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124545134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Going beyond the hype, one discovers interesting concepts and opportunities for a supposed future Web which is commonly called the 3D Web. The global provision of such a vision is much more than just another evolutionary step in content visualization, rather severe technical challenges need to be addressed by the future Internet infrastructure and protocols. Existing commercial approaches feature only limited scalability due to mostly relying on centralized solutions. With global-scale scenarios like a 3D Web in mind, the application of distributed and decentralized techniques becomes indispensable. In [12] we have introduced the concept of a scale-free and self-organized overlay network for the interconnection of machines that build the backbone of a global-scale online environment. This paper presents a detailed analysis and evaluation of this overlay network based on simulation results. The paper shows the feasibility of the concept for self-organized and decentralized load balancing in highly dynamic environments like virtual online worlds. Moreover the scale-freedom of the network's link structure is shown, which makes it usable for the intended global-scale scenario.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129488824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The requirements are set even higher when teams are working creatively with methodologies such as Design Thinking where challenging and unusual problems are addressed. Based on our first Tele-Board1 prototype which supports real-time Design Thinking for teams distributed over different locations we implemented extended functionalities for asynchronous interaction support. The \"Tele-Board history browser\" is a web-based user interface offering functionality to go back and forth in the timeline of a whiteboard. Additionally it is possible to view the whiteboard's usage statistics to gain insights how Design Thinkers work. In this paper we describe the system's architecture and the role of message capturing as an efficient way for saving and displaying a whiteboard history as well as for profound research data collection. With our tool we can support designers in fulfilling their common tasks more efficiently in dispersed teams and we can also assist design researchers to understand how designers work in an all-digital setting.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130004258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it takes a significantly-sized community to make a social system truly useful. The question addressed in this paper is whether collaborative information finding is feasible in the context of smaller communities. To answer this question, we developed two social systems specifically focused on smaller communities - CoMeT and Conference Navigator II - and explored several techniques to increase the volume of user contributions. This paper reviews the explored techniques and presents empirical evidence that demonstrate their effectiveness.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"8 1-2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114046679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This data would be more useful to cooperating organizations if they were able to share their data. Two major obstacles to this process of data sharing are providing a common storage space and secure access to the shared data. In this paper we address these issues by combining cloud computing technologies such as Hive and Hadoop with XACML policy based security mechanisms that provide fine-grained access to resources. We further present a web-based application that uses this combination and allows collaborating organizations to securely store and retrieve large amounts of data.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123313718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Concrete services are then assigned to each activity based on various criteria. In mainstream service orchestration platforms, the orchestration model is executed by a centralized orchestrator through which all interactions are channeled. This architecture is not optimal in terms of communication overhead and has the usual problems of a single point of failure. In previous work, we proposed a method for executing service orchestrations in a decentralized manner while fulfilling collocation and separation constraints. However, this and similar methods for decentralized orchestration do not seek to optimize the communication overhead between services participating in the orchestration. This paper presents a method for optimizing the selection of services assigned to activities in a service orchestration in terms of QoS properties and communication overhead. The method takes into account the communication cost between pairs of services, the amount of data that these services need to exchange in the orchestration, and the collocation and separation constraints imposed by the service providers.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129983547","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They coordinate the work items among employees and ensure the correct execution of processes. In this paper we focus on the organizational perspective of process management systems. This perspective is responsible for assigning people together with their roles within business organizations to process execution. A key issue in integrating the organizational perspective into processes is the strategy for selecting people to execute work steps. This assignment is the basis for collaboration among the people of an organization within a process-based application. We implemented our approach in ESProNa, a Logtalk application running in SWI-Prolog extended with the Thea library providing direct and complete support for OWL2 ontologies. The use of these languages allows the definition of comprehensive organizational constraints. We will cover both, the definition of these constraints in the process model, and their interpretation by the process execution engine. Further we will show how the organizational perspective impacts the order of process execution, i. e. the way of collaboration between the assigned people decisively.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"28 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129384856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The architecture is able to add collaboration with no need to modify the source code of the original single-user application, and providing also the capability to introduce group semantics into the new, collaborative application that is obtained. The architecture is shown in practice, by introducing CollabXMind, a collaborative mind map tool, that is based on a well-known single-user tool, XMind.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129760093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, personal notes are limited in terms of providing an overview of collaborative work practices and reflecting the evolution of data along successive meeting phases, especially taking into account actions performed on paper and digital media. We propose a solution for the review of meeting data captured along three dimensions of collaboration: paper-digital interaction, private and shared documents as well as pre- and in- meeting information. Based on a general data model, our system enhances the transition between succeeding meeting phases and improves the review of personal and collaborative cross-media meeting material.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127722290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In such a collaborative environment, scientific experiments include data collection form sensors, and data analysis performed by scientists. To meet the client requirements these activities have to be dynamically coordinated. Furthermore, this coordination must occur whenever data analysis results indicate that sensor data streams need to be adjusted to provide desirable results. In this paper, we present a platform and the design of its architecture that enable such real-time collaborative analysis of sensor data. We also discuss a case study from plant phenomics research. We illustrate that our solution permits scientists to build executable data models and conduct immediate data analysis that are driven by direct feedback from clients.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126100540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
