Family health histories are a common component of a standard medical exam, which collects basic clinical data about patients and their family members. Such information has always been helpful in assessing overall patient health. But today, clinicians may use the information gathered from a simple family health history to perform health risk assessments for certain cancers or to formulate personal health recommendations. While family members serve as the primary resource to obtain information, archives that house medical information also serve as an important site for medical genealogists to mine for life saving information. The purpose of this article is to review the federal and state laws that impact the archivist’s role in the world of precision medicine and family health genealogy. It includes an introduction to family medical histories and their use in precision medicine; a brief review of privacy and medical record laws, including proposed changes to privacy laws by the Trump administration; and, finally, potential areas for change in the law.","PeriodicalId":35382,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Archival Organization","volume":"14 1","pages":"176 - 180"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15332748.2018.1522090","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48963332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Users of these services are creating large amounts of data, including tracks played and playlists curated. If properly managed, this data could enrich collections by illuminating the habits and inner lives of archival donors. However, the limits of proprietary software pose a challenge. They have shared assumptions, the common goal of the platform is well understood by both parties, and the vocabulary used to describe actions, tasks, and items is substantially the same, or at least agreed-upon. However, when the discussion turns to digital preservation, there may be a divergence in priorities and understanding. While the archivist’s priority is on making sure their digital assets are preserved and accessible forever, the IT personnel’s focus may be on making current data publicly accessible, making sure that systems are running smoothly right now. To further complicate matters, IT personnel have been performing an activity that sounds very much like digital preservation: archiving, backups, and storage of multiple copies. This column will explore the convergence and divergence of the archival and IT professions in regards to digital preservation, as well as suggest the topics and questions that need to be discussed so that both parties have a mutual understanding of meeting the needs of providing appropriate digital preservation.","PeriodicalId":35382,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Archival Organization","volume":"14 1","pages":"101 - 90"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15332748.2018.1528827","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41374506","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Editor Philip C. Bantin is a pioneer in this field through his work as university archivist and records manager at Indiana University, Bloomington. He is eminently qualified to edit this collection of theoretical writings and case studies, which are written by experts who have been engaged in the implementation of TDRs over the last decade and a half. The organization of the book is sensible and pragmatic. Eight chapters form the core of the book and are presented in the order of the repository functional creation process, from policy formation, system components, content creation, metadata, and content ingest, to storage, access, retention management and preservation strategies. Each chapter follows a concise model: first introducing the “what” of digital repositories—the theory—followed by the “how” in one or more implementation case studies. Bantin establishes a model for each theoretical essay and case study, as well, so information is presented in a consistent fashion and major topics or components are adequately addressed. As the reader proceeds through the book, he/she gains a foundation in TDR research and scholarship, fundamental frameworks and standards, while simultaneously learning of the tools, documentation, project designs, management opportunities and challenges of real-world implementations. The case studies are thoroughly documented and well illustrated with diagrams, charts and other data. They come from a variety of public and private institutions and business sectors, and include ample contributions from the United States and other countries. The concluding chapter of the book looks to the present state of TDRs and anticipates the future direction of research and development. The book is as up-to-date as we have in the literature at the moment. This book helps fill a gap that has existed for a while now. It is not too technical and jargon-heavy for the reader, whether an experienced information professional or novice. It would be an excellent textbook for a graduate course on this topic and is an outstanding primary reference for those preparing for implementation of a TDR at their institution. I intend to incorporate sections of it into the courses I teach at San Jose State University and as a reference publication for client recommendations in my consulting practice. For those wanting to implement a TDR but who have no real vision of where to start or what to expect, Building Trustworthy Digital Repositories: Theory and Implementation can help. Its real strength lies in Bantin’s editorial juxtaposition of theory and implementation. It demonstrates that effective research has produced some real successes out there and that this is not a professional Mt. Everest. This book examines interview narratives of 62 women who have experienced partner stalking. The authors use a convenience sample comprised of half urban and half suburban women. Most of the women in this book have experienced both physical violence and sexual coercion as part of their stalking experiences. The authors present the following aspects of being female victims of stalking: their perceptions and experiences of stalking, their coping and co-occurring problems from stalking, the support systems, (informal and formal) responses, and the justice system’s responses to stalking. Each chapter begins with a personal narrative and contains multiple quotations from the interviews. The strengths of this book are numerous. The variety of first-hand experiences brings the subject matter to life. Second, the reader is able to make sense of a phenomenon that is commonly misunderstood by those in the mental health and legal systems. For example, the chapter on mental health services describes the responses practitioners have to women in this situation and the lack of assistance available because of barriers. This is useful information that can inform some of the systemic practices that are unknowingly detrimental to female victims of stalking. The research, however, has some limitations. One drawback of the book is the lack of information given to the mental health community about best practices. While the authors provide a great deal of descriptive statistics, they do not provide empirical information regarding predisposing factors of being in such a stalking relationship. This book may be beneficial to female victims of stalking relationships. Since the nature of stalking can be a silent and lonely phenomenon, it may be helpful for victims to learn from this book more about the prevalence and effects of stalking. Alienation and isolation are two of the common tactics used by men in these relationships; thus, reading stories of other women may be affirming and empowering for victims. Also, the authors combined seemingly disparate sides of the issue throughout illustrating both urban and rural women’s perceptions.","PeriodicalId":35382,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Archival Organization","volume":"14 1","pages":"80 - 82"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15332748.2018.1503018","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48898138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
