Information is more easily accessible through digital channels and is increasingly abundant. Generative Artificial intelligence (AI) adds to this reality and increases the need for digitally driven information literacy skills. This paper aims to guide librarians by discussing the digitalization of information creation, retrieval, and use. It recommends the training of both digital and information literacy for students. Librarians are called upon to provide clear guidelines to their universities to steer the use of generative AI. The implications of digital information sources and generative AI are discussed with the role of librarians in context.HIGHLIGHTSInformation literacy and digital literacy are related.Academic libraries should include digital topics in information literacy training.Information literacy should be trained at the start of university education and before students begin dissertation writing.University libraries should propose guidelines for the use of generative artificial intelligence tools by students.Keywords: African universitiesAIBardAIChatGPTdigital literacygenerative artificial intelligencehigher educationinformation literacyuniversity libraries AcknowledgementsThe author thanks the Hanns Seidel Foundation in Munich, Germany for hosting him in Germany and allowing him to present on the topic of AI use in universities. The authors present the use of content analysis as a means of assessing students’ source evaluations. The analysis revealed that all students were able to correctly list three factors that contribute to a source’s credibility, and nearly all students (96.5%) were able to define bias. Interestingly, 42.6% of students evaluated the New York Times article as not credible, for a variety of categorical reasons. These findings led to actionable changes to library instruction content.Keywords: Content analysisinformation literacy instructiononline learningonline learning assessmentsource evaluation Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the authors.","PeriodicalId":35377,"journal":{"name":"Internet Reference Services Quarterly","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135413218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results showed that the reliability of ChatGPT's references vary across different source types. For journal articles, they were all fabricated and not compliant with APA 7 format. Webpages did not match actual existing sites. However, for books, the generated references correctly corresponded to real, existing ones. In the case of journal websites, the links within the responses were functional. Although this exploration gained interesting insights, researchers are strongly recommended not to depend on ChatGPT for references due to accuracy issues and must undertake manual, scholarly searches.Keywords: Artificial intelligenceChatGPTfake referencesinformation accuracylarge language modelsliterature reviewreferencesscholarly research Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).","PeriodicalId":35377,"journal":{"name":"Internet Reference Services Quarterly","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134975609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It examines the strategic positioning and services provided by MADLab within one of Canada’s major academic libraries for science and health sciences, and shares author’s own experiences in this research domain. The facility’s emphasis on developing mobile apps, its partnership with UOT libraries to support their operations, and its potential commitment to establishing an experimental culture to drive technology adoptions, such as AI, are highlighted in the column. It also examines the cooperative partnership between MADLab and UOT libraries, illustrative of a mutually beneficial partnership that fosters entrepreneurship and creativity within the UOT community. As AI and technology continually evolve, the MADLab case study offers valuable insights into the transformative power of strategic positioning, experiential learning, and collaborative partnerships in the pursuit of knowledge dissemination and cutting-edge technological advancements in the time to come.","PeriodicalId":35377,"journal":{"name":"Internet Reference Services Quarterly","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45046897","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Additionally, the column seeks to highlight the benefits and interplay between the frameworks, providing insights for librarians interested in implementing AI solutions and driving technological advancements in library settings. The column reports two frameworks - The Need-Based Experimentation (NBE) Framework and the Curiosity-Based Experimentation (CBE) Framework based on the author’s professional experiences and empirical observations of 10 university libraries’ experimentation-driven AI technology adoption practices. The NBE framework focuses on experimenting with AI technologies that have the functional capability to address the library’s current business needs. In contrast, the CBE framework explores AI technologies out of curiosity, aiming to gain practical experiences and uncover potential future applications, aligned with the librarian’s interests. These frameworks guide librarians to effectively experiment with AI technology based on their motivations and goals. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, there is no experimentation-driven framework for adopting AI technologies to assist libraries do so strategically. The adoption of AI should be influenced by carefully planned, ongoing experiments, the results of which should be deployed in real to inform adoption decisions.","PeriodicalId":35377,"journal":{"name":"Internet Reference Services Quarterly","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43418791","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
