In the early 1980s, Tischner started a dispute with Marxism. According to the author of the article, there were many indications that at the end of the 1990s he would fight another intellectual war against liberalism, and in particular with its way of viewing human freedom. For many reasons, this dispute did not happen. The author of the article believes that Leszek Kolakowski could have been the main adversary in this dispute. The majority of contemporary intellectuals would agree that freedom is fundamental to human existence. This view was shared by both Leszek Kolakowski and Jozef Tischner, therefore the dispute would concern the nature of internal freedom rather than the external one. Either of the adversaries saw it, in a different way. Kolakowski was close to the liberal approach to freedom. In turn, Tischner’s view of freedom was closer to the way St. Augustine had understood it. In this text, the author introduces both these concepts of freedom. {"title":"The misery of the human condition and religion","authors":"Piotr Kostyło","doi":"10.15633/LIE.4040","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15633/LIE.4040","url":null,"abstract":"The present essay is devoted to various aspects of the misery of the human condition and their references to religion, as conceived of by Leszek Kołakowski and Józef Tischner. After a preliminary presentation of the two thinkers, the author discusses example aspects of the misery in question, showing at what points Kołakowski’s thinking differed from that of Tischner. However, the author finds that the key issue is the evolution that took place in the views on this subject in each one of them. This evolution shows that Kołakowski’s and Tischner’s hopes for overcoming that which each one of them, in his own manner, understood as the misery of the human condition in the Polish localness were not fulfilled. Thus, Poles did not manage to attain universalism, as perceived by both the thinkers in the context of the Western European culture. Jozef Tischner in his review of Leszek Kolakowski’s life and philosophical work. I demonstrate – which is the main purpose of the paper – that this perspective is determined by the Tischnerian discovery of the so-called “basic conviction” in Kolakowski’s writings. Such a conviction was of crucial significance for his philosophical apologetics of Marxism as well as his radical criticism of the Church, and communism founded on Marxism. As Jozef Tischner poses the question about the “basic conviction,” he proves that in Kolakowski’s philosophy from the beginning it centres around ethical issues, and in particular the idea of human rights. It is in these that Tischner discerns the central theme in Leszek Kolakowski’s philosophy.
