Developers should be able to make design decisions about these technologies in order to fulfill the requirements of each specific system. As a consequence, choosing and using specific ones (protocols, middleware, networking technologies, etc.) is actually not only a technical but a design problem that has consequences in relation with the supported applications/systems (e.g. mobile applications, context-aware systems, ambient intelligence environments, etc). However, the use of communication technologies require a high level of expertise, specially when using middleware technologies, since they usually entail a complex design. This research work intends to contribute to simplifying and improving the design, use and understanding of existing or future communication technologies. This paper proposes a model-driven approach to simplify the development of complex communication schemes. From the abstract specification of a communication scheme as a Computation Independent Model (CIM), it is derived a Platform Independent Model (PIM), which comprises the elements present in ubiquitous systems. Middleware technologies and their particular settings conform to Platform Specific Models (PSM) that stem from applying transformation rules to that PIM. To automatize the transformation process, the approach has been implemented with EMF and ATL. Finally, as a case study, the model-driven development of a middleware for ubiquitous systems is presented.","PeriodicalId":353156,"journal":{"name":"2013 9th International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132136045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to support humans in this task, we propose to use mashups for integrating information sources automatically, and presenting them in a unified way. This article reports on work in progress concerning a system which combines a server-side data mashup with a mobile mashup with the ultimate goal to support users in making sustainable decisions in a recycling scenario.","PeriodicalId":353156,"journal":{"name":"2013 9th International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"344 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115025808","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article presents a tactile interface allowing direct manipulation of a context model for adaptive behavior in intelligent environments. The presented tool starts with an abstract context model, which is transformed to an easy-to-use interface supporting tangible interaction. Different context parameters can directly be manipulated. Diverse context-relevant items can be integrated using tangible objects to emulate and use their real world location parameters. The article gives an insight in the technical implementation and the usage as substitute for a sensor topology from an existing intelligent environment to support evaluations and tests.","PeriodicalId":353156,"journal":{"name":"2013 9th International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123756469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the increased number of dialogue system applications the interest in that field has grown significantly in recent years. Nevertheless, there are many open issues in the field of automatic speaker identification. Among them the choice of the appropriate speech signal features and machine learning algorithms could be mentioned. We make here an overview of modern methods designed for the problem of speaker identification. We also describe here our direction for possible improvements to the automated speaker identification.","PeriodicalId":353156,"journal":{"name":"2013 9th International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121971475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It aims at providing a unified platform offering different modes of dialogue control, i.e., rule-based and probabilistic. For this, the Hidden Information State (HIS) approach is applied to an already published, solely rule-based version of OwlSpeak, which uses ontologies to specify the dialogue and separates the specification from the dialogue control. Consequently, the changes to OwlSpeak necessary for applying the HIS approach are presented in detail. Furthermore, a system test has been performed for a simple dialogue in the flight booking domain successfully validating the implementation.","PeriodicalId":353156,"journal":{"name":"2013 9th International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127791313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Extensive testing of a dynamically changing group of devices is not possible. Therefore, formal approaches are necessary to validate the consistency of a control system. In this paper, we discuss consistency of a decentralised and dynamic control system based on goal-emitting simple behaviours. We define different types of consistency and show how to verify them automatically.","PeriodicalId":353156,"journal":{"name":"2013 9th International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"142 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129024482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As missions increased in duration, the issue of liveability gradually became an issue of habitability, opening the way for architects to contribute to the design of a functional interior. This paper presents an emerging field in the cross-section of design and technology titled sensponsive architecture. The term sensponsive is a combination of the words sense and responsive. While a responsive design approach is applied to help a structure react to environmental changes, a sensponsive approach is user-centered, employing the same technology to ensure the spatial and psychological comfort of the user. It is the product of a flexible, transformable, technology-mediated architecture with intelligent systems seamlessly incorporated into the created environment, in this case the interior of a spacecraft module, to exhibit a programmed behavior in direct relation to the human activity within. The activity is evaluated through three diagnostic layers, the spatial layer, the perceptual layer and the experiential layer. The sensponsive configuration is based upon two active systems, the Activity Evaluation System (AES) and the Response System (RS) which act in combination by directing subtle spatial (volume, surface) and ambient (audio, visual, olfactory, haptic) changes when necessary. It acts discreetly, firstly by understanding the conditions and the context in which they take place and then by responding to them accordingly with sense. A sensponsive spacecraft environment aims to provide beneficial living conditions for the astronauts and address spatial qualities along with activity-related issues that emerge from prolonged isolation and confinement.","PeriodicalId":353156,"journal":{"name":"2013 9th International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121117850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For teaching we argue that the Internet-of-Things provides a highly motivating topic to capture students' imaginations, and a perfect platform for teaching computer science. In addition, we explain the potential for entire campuses or buildings to be constructed from Internet-of-Things technologies and the potential for this infrastructure to act as a teaching platform. This proposition is perfectly captured by the axiom \"The college building (or campus) is the lab\". This philosophy is part of a wider movement that started in the EU, called Living Labs. In achieving these aims, our work seeks to combine a number of concepts, first we utilise the Internet-of-Things, second we incorporate Living Labs ideas, third we harness the iCampus vision, forth we use the 'Smart Box' concept and finally we implement the Pervasive-interactive-Programming (PiP) paradigm. We contend this approach can be used in various mixes to produce highly motivating and effective educational environments. We illustrate this work by describing the application of these ideas to a real-world venture, the Harlow UTC (in the UK). The main focus of this paper concerns the use of PiP, together with the Internet-of-Things, to teach elementary programming skills. In in support of this we present results of an evaluation of PiP with 18 participants (students and staff) of varied age and gender. The main conclusions of these evaluations were that PiP enabled students and staff, with diverse backgrounds, to quickly master the programming skills involved. The paper concludes by describing our future plans for this work.","PeriodicalId":353156,"journal":{"name":"2013 9th International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122436852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Localization techniques have been actively studied recently due to service as well as safety and security matters. There are many localization systems with different architectures, configurations, accuracies and reliabilities. However, no technique is now generally applicable for indoor environments. In this paper, a probabilistic propagation model of WiFi signals in an environment with walls/floors, and its application to a localization technique using WiFi signal strength, are introduced. A small program installed on the smart device regularly scans the signal strengths to surrounding WiFi access points and send information to a central server to calculate the position. The user location is achieved in 3D space by a robust hybrid method which is based on the probabilistic propagation model and takes the advantages from both well-known geometrical-calculation and finger-printing approaches: low site-survey cost and robustness. The parameters are tuned by using a genetic algorithm from easily collected data.","PeriodicalId":353156,"journal":{"name":"2013 9th International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"31 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120884711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, factors such as the users' spatial abilities and spatial knowledge, usually related to their cognitive maps come into play and may be manifested in the form of map-like representations. This paper extends previous work on the implications of locative media use for spatial perception and cognition by presenting results from a field research that utilized a location-based multi-user communication system in the city of Athens, Greece in order to study the perception of the urban environment and the formulation of spatial cognitive structures as a result of the system's use. The users' spatial representations were assessed by a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods which primarily consisted of questionnaires, focus groups, and sketch mapping, i.e. map-like sketches of the activity area, made by the users themselves after taking part in the activity.","PeriodicalId":353156,"journal":{"name":"2013 9th International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126920800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
