Dr. Lomborg is a renowned liberal pro-market environmentalist that acknowledges the existence of anthropomorphic climate change. Nevertheless, his analyses and proposals for tackling the problem are sparking heated debate among scholars and analysts. The book is the perfect invitation for readers to see the fierce and often covert ideological and economic struggles that arise as we respond to the climate, energy, and economic challenges facing humanity.","PeriodicalId":35241,"journal":{"name":"Ambiente e Sociedade","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67253178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is intended to understand the meaning of the “Entrenubes” Ecological Park (PEN) for visitors, through: 1) identifying the sociodemographic variables associated with the different ecosystem services and disservices; 2) Define how the relative importance of interactions with these variables differs between ES. A questionnaire was applied to 281 visitors. A Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA), chi-squared test and ordinal logistic regression were performed between ES and visitor profile. 7 CES and 3 regulatory ones were identified. No significant associations were found between ES preferences, disservices and sociodemographic characteristics of the visitors. Recreation presented the highest average perception. Drug abuse was the predominant disservice. These results provide criteria for decision-making in urban green infrastructure planning.","PeriodicalId":35241,"journal":{"name":"Ambiente e Sociedade","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67251332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim here is to discuss and share the experience of the Work group of the Urban Parks in the medium-sized city of São Carlos, in the state of São Paulo, as an example of the interaction between science and planning practice. The theoretical-methodological approach has a convergence point at landscaping and the system of open spaces. This study aims to pursue guidelines for developing a methodological approach that enlightens the relations between deforestation and urbanization in the Amazon. Considering the intense urban transition undergoing in the region, a systematic review was conducted to understand the state of knowledge and challenges of this scope. The analysis highlighted four investigative perspectives with relevant contributions, which could be better articulated with adjustments in the analysis system, an urban conceptual reformulation, and also with variables sensitive to socio-spatial dynamics. Approaches to social theory of mobility and risk have supported the design of an urban critical theory in line with the multidimensionality and transscalarity of the urban fabric socio-landscapes. By adding analytical perspectives from the spatial demography field, the study presents a theoretical-methodological framework to approach the contemporary interface between deforestation and urbanization.","PeriodicalId":35241,"journal":{"name":"Ambiente e Sociedade","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67252383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although it is not mandatory in Brazil, there are applications and initiatives for its formalization. The objective is to explore the Brazilian academic research on SEA through quantitative and qualitative analysis of papers, theses, and dissertations. The results reveal that since 2000 to 2020, local research has been represented by 75 dissertations and theses from 20 universities and, since 2005 to 2020, by 61 articles from 114 authors, published in 30 journals. While the research is in an early stage of development, it covers a broad diagnosis of the application of SEA, contributions to a Brazilian system, has little methodological discussion, and encompasses comprehensive analysis of the quality of the reports. We recommend that future research aims at fostering and building a legal framework for SEA for Brazilian planning.","PeriodicalId":35241,"journal":{"name":"Ambiente e Sociedade","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67252910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An interpretative description based on documents and content analysis of the environmental assessment process was adopted as our research method. The evaluation of such documents demonstrates that the strategic actions designed by the skilled actor - in this case, the Vale do Ribeira Movement of People Threatened by Dams - was fundamental to unveil the rationality shared by local communities. This fact has changed the dominant order, which prioritizes the logic of development and often results in the release of projects that affect or violate human rights.","PeriodicalId":35241,"journal":{"name":"Ambiente e Sociedade","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67253022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Carbon storage and fixation in aboveground biomass was estimated in the urban woodland of Ibagué with a census from 2013-2016, and a new measurement of 15% on individuals in the 2019-2020 period. The number of trees of the main species required to mitigate emissions of greenhouse gases from households was estimated. Urban woodland captures about 3.81 Gg CO2/year, which represents only 2,3% of the city emissions. The mitigation of 169.2 Gg CO2/year of the city households would be achieved by having between 412,000 and 1.2 million trees of the most dominant species. Efforts based on green infrastructure to compensate urban emissions at municipal level must be coordinated with territory policies at large scales.","PeriodicalId":35241,"journal":{"name":"Ambiente e Sociedade","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67253254","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ethical political reflection around development patterns is therefore a decisive reflection. The aim is to dialogue about regional development from the standpoint of categories of socio-environmental ethics. It is exploratory research which is supported empirically in documental analysis of two cases of the regionalization process of the state of Santa Catarina (Brazil). It concludes that recognizing legitimate moral limits to the use of landscapes and living beings would be an important step in development planning, which requires a territorial reading. This is ignored by exclusively technical discourses and ecological common sense.","PeriodicalId":35241,"journal":{"name":"Ambiente e Sociedade","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67253386","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this, it is relevant to analyze how individuals understand the process of building sustainability. The social representation of the SD of an intentional sample of 64 stakeholders from five Azorean cities was explored through prototypical and similarity analysis of a free association of words. The data were analyzed using the programs Evocation 2003 and IRAMUTEQ and interpreted according to the structural approach of social representations. The resulting representation identifies the three classic pillars of the SD, as well as its main challenges and strategic options. The economic pillar held a central place, interconnecting both with the environmental and the social pillars, although the latter showed less emphasis. It is important to keep monitoring the evolution of this SD representation, that appears to be more sophisticated than other notions found in similar studies.","PeriodicalId":35241,"journal":{"name":"Ambiente e Sociedade","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67250941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
