Amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, individuals are inflicted with these false and potentially harmful claims and stories, which may harm the vaccination process. Psychological studies reveal that the human ability to detect deception is only slightly better than chance; therefore, there is a growing need for serious consideration for developing automated strategies to combat fake news that traverses these platforms at an alarming rate. This paper systematically reviews the existing fake news detection technologies by exploring various machine learning and deep learning techniques pre- and post-pandemic, which has never been done before to the best of the authors’ knowledge.Design/methodology/approachThe detailed literature review on fake news detection is divided into three major parts. The authors searched papers no later than 2017 on fake news detection approaches on deep learning and machine learning. The papers were initially searched through the Google scholar platform, and they have been scrutinized for quality. The authors kept “Scopus” and “Web of Science” as quality indexing parameters. All research gaps and available databases, data pre-processing, feature extraction techniques and evaluation methods for current fake news detection technologies have been explored, illustrating them using tables, charts and trees.FindingsThe paper is dissected into two approaches, namely machine learning and deep learning, to present a better understanding and a clear objective. Next, the authors present a viewpoint on which approach is better and future research trends, issues and challenges for researchers, given the relevance and urgency of a detailed and thorough analysis of existing models. This paper also delves into fake new detection during COVID-19, and it can be inferred that research and modeling are shifting toward the use of ensemble approaches.Originality/valueThe study also identifies several novel automated web-based approaches used by researchers to assess the validity of pandemic news that have proven to be successful, although currently reported accuracy has not yet reached consistent levels in the real world.","PeriodicalId":352072,"journal":{"name":"Int. However, the performance of these systems is adversely affected by the missing values in medical datasets. Imputation methods are used to predict these missing values. In this paper, a new imputation method called hybrid imputation optimized by the classifier (HIOC) is proposed to predict missing values efficiently.Design/methodology/approachThe proposed HIOC is developed by using a classifier to combine multivariate imputation by chained equations (MICE), K nearest neighbor (KNN), mean and mode imputation methods in an optimum way. Performance of HIOC has been compared to MICE, KNN, and mean and mode methods. Four classifiers support vector machine (SVM), naive Bayes (NB), random forest (RF) and decision tree (DT) have been used to evaluate the performance of imputation methods.FindingsThe results show that HIOC performed efficiently even with a high rate of missing values. It had reduced root mean square error (RMSE) up to 17.32% in the heart disease dataset and 34.73% in the breast cancer dataset. Correct prediction of missing values improved the accuracy of the classifiers in predicting diseases. It increased classification accuracy up to 18.61% in the heart disease dataset and 6.20% in the breast cancer dataset.Originality/valueThe proposed HIOC is a new hybrid imputation method that can efficiently predict missing values in any medical dataset.","PeriodicalId":352072,"journal":{"name":"Int. Conventional clothing patterns design relies on experienced designers. Although the quality of clothing patterns is very high on conventional design, the input time and output amount ratio is relative low for conventional design. In order to break through the bottleneck of conventional clothing patterns design, this paper proposes a novel way based on generative adversarial network (GAN) model for automatic clothing patterns generation, which not only reduces the dependence of experienced designer, but also improve the input-output ratio.Design/methodology/approachIn view of the fact that clothing patterns have high requirements for global artistic perception and local texture details, this paper improves the conventional GAN model from two aspects: a multi-scales discriminators strategy is introduced to deal with the local texture details; and the self-attention mechanism is introduced to improve the global artistic perception. Therefore, the improved GAN called multi-scales self-attention improved generative adversarial network (MS-SA-GAN) model, which is used for high resolution clothing patterns generation.FindingsTo verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed MS-SA-GAN model, a crawler is designed to acquire standard clothing patterns dataset from Baidu pictures, and a comparative experiment is conducted on our designed clothing patterns dataset. In experiments, we have adjusted different parameters of the proposed MS-SA-GAN model, and compared the global artistic perception and local texture details of the generated clothing patterns.Originality/valueExperimental results have shown that the clothing patterns generated by the proposed MS-SA-GAN model are superior to the conventional algorithms in some local texture detail indexes. In addition, a group of clothing design professionals is invited to evaluate the global artistic perception through a valence-arousal scale. The scale results have shown that the proposed MS-SA-GAN model achieves a better global art perception.","PeriodicalId":352072,"journal":{"name":"Int. J. Intell. Comput. One type of semisupervised learning is constrained clustering; this type of learning does not use class labels for clustering. Instead, it uses information of some pairs of instances (side information), and these instances maybe are in the same cluster (must-link [ML]) or in different clusters (cannot-link [CL]). Constrained clustering was studied extensively; however, little works have focused on constrained clustering for big datasets. In this paper, the authors have presented a constrained clustering for big datasets, and the method uses a DNN. The authors inject the constraints (ML and CL) to this DNN to promote the clustering performance and call it constrained deep embedded clustering (CDEC). In this manner, an autoencoder was implemented to elicit informative low dimensional features in the latent space and then retrain the encoder network using a proposed Kullback–Leibler divergence objective function, which captures the constraints in order to cluster the projected samples. The proposed CDEC has been compared with the adversarial autoencoder, constrained 1-spectral clustering and autoencoder + k-means was applied to the known MNIST, Reuters-10k and USPS datasets, and their performance were assessed in terms of clustering accuracy. Empirical results confirmed the statistical superiority of CDEC in terms of clustering accuracy to the counterparts.FindingsFirst of all, this is the first DNN-constrained clustering that uses side information to improve the performance of clustering without using labels in big datasets with high dimension. Second, the author defined a formula to inject side information to the DNN. Third, the proposed method improves clustering performance and network convergence speed.Originality/valueLittle works have focused on constrained clustering for big datasets; also, the studies in DNNs for clustering, with specific loss function that simultaneously extract features and clustering the data, are rare. The method improves the performance of big data clustering without using labels, and it is important because the data labeling is expensive and time-consuming, especially for big datasets.","PeriodicalId":352072,"journal":{"name":"Int. To provide high-intensity radiated field protection (HIRFP) for the electric and electronic aircraft system and defied the EMI effect on it, metal matrix composite was conquered. To provide the dynamic ever-increasing requirement of industries, it is necessary that Al6061 metal matrix composite assisted with AL2O3 and fly ash is used to construct the aircraft to provide HIRFP. The thickness of the material can be maintained as low as possible to use it as a coating material for the aircraft surface. X-band for oblique incidence is used to measure electromagnetic and mechanical safeguarding properties of composites.Design/methodology/approachDay by day, the applications of aerospace are becoming digital and automated. Proper shielding techniques are required to operate digital electronic devices without electromagnetic interference. It leads to a rapid rise in temperature, thermal ablation, delamination, and adverse effects on the electric and electronic aircraft system. Fly ash, a metal matrix material composite AL6061 with different percentages of reinforcement of Al2O3, was contemplated and experimented with for mechanical properties like tensile strength, density and hardness.FindingsThe obtained results compared with adjusted values and an improvement of 0.19, 0.18, 0.14 g/cm3 for density of MMC-1, MMC-2, MMC-3.31, 11 MPa for tensile strength of MMC-1, MMC-2. 24, 27, 23 BHN for hardness of MMC-1, MMC-2, MMC-3. In this paper, the authors propose an attention-based nested segmentation network, named DAU-Net. In total, two types of attention mechanisms are introduced to make the U-Net network focus on the key feature regions. The proposed network has a deep supervised encoder–decoder architecture and a redesigned dense skip connection. DAU-Net introduces an attention mechanism between convolutional blocks so that the features extracted at different levels can be merged with a task-related selection.Design/methodology/approachIn the coding layer, the authors designed a channel attention module. It marks the importance of each feature graph in the segmentation task. In the decoding layer, the authors designed a spatial attention module. It marks the importance of different regional features. And by fusing features at different scales in the same coding layer, the network can fully extract the detailed information of the original image and learn more tumor boundary information.FindingsTo verify the effectiveness of the DAU-Net, experiments were carried out on the BRATS 2018 brain tumor magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) database. The segmentation results show that the proposed method has a high accuracy, with a Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 89% in the complete tumor, which is an improvement of 8.04 and 4.02%, compared with fully convolutional network (FCN) and U-Net, respectively.Originality/valueThe experimental results show that the proposed method has good performance in the segmentation of brain tumors. Regarding demand and order quantities with the deterministic and type-1 fuzzy numbers, we have also formulated the classic/crisp MOVMI model and type-1 fuzzy MOVMI (T1FMOVMI) model. The suggested solution technique can solve both crisp MOVMI and T1FMOVMI problems. By finding the optimal ordered quantities and backorder levels, the Pareto-fronts are constructed to form the solution sets for the three models.Design/methodology/approachA multi-objective vendor managed inventory (MOVMI) is the most recognized marketing and delivery technique for the service provider and the retail in the supply chain in Industry 4.0. Due to the evolving market conditions, the characteristics of the individual product, the delivery period and the manufacturing costs, the demand rate and order quantity of the MOVMI device are highly unpredictable. In such a scenario, a MOVMI system with a deterministic demand rate and order quantity cannot be designed to estimate the highly unforeseen cost of the problem. This paper introduces a novel interval type-2 fuzzy multi-objective vendor managed inventory (IT2FMOVMI) system, which uses interval type-2 fuzzy numbers (IT2FNs) to represent demand rate and order quantities. As the model is an NP-hard, the well-known meta-heuristic algorithm named NSGA-II (Non-dominated sorted genetic algorithm-II) with EKM (Enhanced Karnink-Mendel) algorithm based solution method has been established.FindingsThe experimental simulations for the five test problems that demonstrated distinct conditions are considered from the real-datasets of SAPCO company. Experimental study concludes that T1FMOVMI and crisp MOVMI schemes are outclassed by IT2FMOVMI model, offering more accurate Pareto-Fronts and efficiency measurement values.Originality/valueUsing fuzzy sets theory, a significant amount of work has been already done in past decades from various points of views to model the MOVMI. However, this is the very first attempt to introduce type-2 fuzzy modelling for the problem to address the realistic implementation of the imprecise parameters.","PeriodicalId":352072,"journal":{"name":"Int.
