Irrespective of his quite short stay in this country, P. B. Sivickis is still remembered there. However, some important facts of his scientific activity are still obscure to Philippine scientists. In 1997, Philippines celebrated the centenary of Jose S. Domantay, an internationally acclaimed echinodermist. In commemoration of the event, M. F. Cichon wrote an article where he mentioned the first publication of J. S. Domantay that had been in general the first article on Philippine holothurians and “which he co-authored with P. B. Sivickis”. M. F. Cichon wrote about the influence exerted on J. S. Domantay by Philippine scientists, alas, in this context he did not mention P. B. Sivickis. M. F. Cichon was unaware that the first article on holothurians was a publication of the master thesis of J. S. Domantay supervised by P. B. Sivickis; therefore, the initial and the most important influence was exerted namely by him. In 2010, a 100-year anniversary of biology in UP was celebrated. On this occasion, F. Lacanilao made a survey of professors’ publications in SCI-indexed journals and made a top list of Philippine biologists. P. B. Sivickis was entered into this list. However, F. Lacanilao had no information on the following events: the exact dates of P. B. Sivickis’ service at UP, his publications in Science and Nature, his scientific career after his departure from Philippines. Also, in the survey he was referred to as an American. In 1923, P. B. Sivickis established Marine Biological Station in Puerto Galera (PG) and in 1924–1925 was Director of the Station. He demonstrated a perfect insight to choose PG as a location for the Station. In the 1980s a study by UP found out that PG area can boast the highest diversity of marine species in the world. PG was registered as a Biosphere Reserve under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme in 1973 and listed by Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World in 2005, and is the only bay in Philippines to be listed there. It is a pity that Philippine scientists did not remember who had been the founder of the Station in PG and the date it had been founded: according to M. D. Fortes, the Station was established by University of Philippines in 1932.","PeriodicalId":35175,"journal":{"name":"Socijalna Ekologija","volume":"28 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-08-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86793572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Rich. ex DC.) is a perennial evergreen plant with a long rhizome. It grows in Arctic tundra and mountain habitats. Usually E.  variegatum is assigned to rare or fairly frequent plant species in Lithuania. During the last six decades the number of E. variegatum localities increased more than tenfold. Therefore it is important to perform an analysis of E. variegatum distribution patterns, diversity of localities, and environment protection status in Lithuania.\u0000 In order to analyse E. variegatum distribution and habitats, herbarium specimens of the horsetail in four Lithuanian herbaria as well as the data obtained during personal research were used. The analysis showed that E. variegatum is found in 27 of 60 administrative districts of Lithuania. Approximately 70% of E. variegatum habitats are anthropogenic, found mainly in the abandoned sand or gravel quarries.\u0000 Three naturally occurring E.  variegatum habitat concentration zones were determined in south-eastern and western Lithuania as well as on the coast. Typical naturally occurring E.  variegatum habitats in Lithuania are wet meadows, lake shores, fen, coastal dunes, and pine forests. E. variegatum is rare or very rare in natural habitats and fairly rare or fairly common in anthropogenic habitats in Lithuania. In the latter habitats E. variegatum frequently forms thicket.","PeriodicalId":35175,"journal":{"name":"Socijalna Ekologija","volume":"60 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84921373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The structuring on a broad distributional scale is the result of the glacial and postglacial history, therefore in Europe several main population groups of Atlantic salmon and anadromous form of brown trout, sea trout, have been identified and divergent sources of origin of these groups have been proposed. The pattern of substantial microgeographical differentiation results from the joint action of gene flow, genetic drift, mutation, and natural selection. It is important to understand the effects that the last glaciations have had on the distribution and genetic diversity of these species as well as how selection, genetic drift and gene flow can affect genetic variation within populations and genetic differences between populations in order to fully comprehend the genetic structure of populations and to implement the knowledge for conservation. Genetic management is an important component of strategies that ensure the conservation and recovery of salmon and trout populations. The major issues of genetic management are related with monitoring and conserving gene-level biodiversity, resolving spatio-temporal population structure as well as with genetic consequences of stocking practices. Studies of the population genetic structure are essential for providing estimates of the different sources of variation that determine species’ genetic composition over the geographic area. Knowledge from studies describing spatial and temporal genetic structure is needed to identify and analyze changes of gene level diversity caused by human mediated harvest as well as enhancement practices. Ignoring or not knowing the genetic population structure may result in loss of genetic diversity, reduced productivity and ecological damage. In Lithuania, future management considerations should focus both on maintaining individual populations even at tributary level and ensuring natural levels of gene flow among populations.","PeriodicalId":35175,"journal":{"name":"Socijalna Ekologija","volume":"53 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78471062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The influence of meteorological parameters on variation in these pollutants has been estimated. During the measurement period, activities concentration of radon short-lived decay products varied from 2 to 16 Bq/m3 and values of activity concentration measured during day and night varied from 5 to 7 times. The investigation data showed that meteorological parameters as temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction had great influence on radon decay products activity concentration. Negative corelation (–0.77) between radon decay products activity concentration and the temperature and positive correlation (0.8) with the relative humidity was determined. It has been observed that variations of activity concentration of radon decay products were influenced by the periodically varying wind direction – breeze, a phenomenon which rarely occurs in the region of the Baltic Sea.","PeriodicalId":35175,"journal":{"name":"Socijalna Ekologija","volume":"23 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80937770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Natural ecosystems display a range of adaptive responses to environmental changes, including differential gene activity and phenotypic plasticity (individual-level mechanisms), differential reproduction of genotypes (populationlevel mechanisms), and changes in species abundances (communitylevel mechanisms). We examine which of these responses are typically observed in temperate forests under changing environmental conditions. Following hierarchical adaptability theory, we regard adaptation as a never-ending multilevel hierarchical process of individual-, population- and community-level adjustments to a constantly changing environment. Adaptive adjustments at all organizational levels tend to stabilize aggregate ecosystem properties such as primary production and nutrient cycling. We propose that approximately the same plasticity limits hold for long-lived forest trees and the community of short-lived soil microorganisms. The rate of adaptive rearrangements, however, differs greatly between organisms: we suggest that a year for microorganisms is equivalent to a millennium for trees. Therefore, the forest tree communities are expected to adjust to multi-year climate oscillations as easily as microorganisms to seasonal variability. Such adjustments are made possible by increased expression or proliferation of pre-adapted genes, genotypes, and species.","PeriodicalId":35175,"journal":{"name":"Socijalna Ekologija","volume":"51 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89564390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
